It looks like 3 games to the SB

We just lost badly at home.  We’ll likely have to play 3 games to get to the Super Bowl.  That stinks.

Having said that, there’s a gut part of me that doesn’t mind this team not being heavy favorites coming out of the AFC.  No matter what they say, professional athletes benefit from motivation (which is why coaches have jobs, teams quit on coaches, some players need to be assured of their security as a starter, why most players & coaches compliment the other team prior to playing them, and why trap games happen).  I think that beating the Patriots at home in the playoffs has been a major motivational factor for other teams in the past and the media doesn’t help leading up to the game.  The Jets did it 2 seasons ago and we were a lazy catch or a missed field goal away from being knocked out by the Ravens last year before losing to the Giants.  These teams come in pumped, are underrated leading up to the game and when things don’t go perfectly for the Patriots, the opponents seem to feed off of it.  When we won our SB’s, Manning and the Colts were always what we have been in the last few years.  After last year and the year prior, I’m curious to see how we do when Denver, Houston and San Francisco are the teams that are being talked about.

One problem with the Patriots having to play three games is the fact that the Patriots have never won a Super Bowl without having the bye week in the first round of the playoffs. It certainly doesn't mean they can't do it, but it is absolutely a much tougher road.

Agree jimbo, it`s going to be tough playing in three. Plus they have to go on the road. I do think if Gronk comes back Denver would not be scary at all.

Re: It looks like 3 games to the SB

It will definitely be harder with 3 games, 2 of which will likely be on the road if we aren’t knocked out.  I’m not trying to fool myself into thinking that we’re in better shape now.

I just won’t miss going into the playoffs with the media saying “you’ve got to like Tom Brady and the Patriots at home.”  I think today’s Patriots can be streaky, thrive when underappreciated (vs. Houston) and can sink when over appreciated (vs. San Fran).  I know that I’m being very nit-picky, but we are not the same team that we were in the early 2000’s simply because we come out flat in big games and it’s usually when we’re favored.  I think that we have a good veteran core at important positions but we have younger players who cave to the pressure and expectations (see our secondary, Ridley fumbling, or our newer Olinemen getting beat on big plays).  We never used to do that and I think it was because there was no pressure from the Patriot legacy because they were the one’s creating it.  The talent is there so if the Patriots can regroup and get hot at the right time, they could be dangerous.  Gronk’s health will be unbelievably important and could literally tilt the AFC race.

This is a much, much younger team than the earlier Superbowl teams of the past. That being said, the vets really need to be mentoring the kids over the next few weeks.

Re: It looks like 3 games to the SB

I'm not worried about the Bengals - likely who the Pats face in the WC.

Then its off to Denver - Denver isn't bad, but the Pats D is better than mid-season, so I think they can handle Manning.

It'd be nice if someone knocked off the Texans because that means a home game for the AFCCG if they get that far. And that's the only game I'm worried about - trying to beat the Texans again, but this time in Houston.

This team is so young, with so many rookies and 2nd year players starting, that I don't mind them having an extra playoff game. Every little bit of experience helps. And I kind of like them back to being "underdogs" - having to win on the road.

The G-Men did it twice in a row. Reality? Makes absolutely no difference when you start a game off against a good oponent, the way New England did Sunday night.biggrin

Alright folks get out your vegas betting slips. Here is my predictions for the rest of the year. Patriots willwin out and ge some valuable playing time in at the same time for the back ups. Houston will win a close one againt the vikings but lose to indy. Denver will lose to the browns and squeak by with a win against the chiefs. Boom Pats number two seed. Book it.

That'd be nice. Especially given how banged up this team is.

Denver isn't losing to the Browns.

The best bet for the #2 seed is for Houston to lose twice.  That may not be likely either, but is far more likely than Denver losing either of their last two.

Cleveland has beaten Pittsburgh & Cinci, and given Dallas & Balmer all they could handle. Yes they can beat Denver.

All we can do is wait and see my friend wait and see. I am holding out hope Denver will lose one fo the two and that patriots will win out to ge the second seed. The browns are the better team between them and the chiefs, however who knows peyton better than romeo crennel that could give him defensive fits.

They used to beat Manning back in the days by generating a pass rush.Thats the only i can see them beating the broncos in denver if it gets to that point. We will see. This team needs to healthy and they definetly need Gronk! The running game is much better when he is on the field.

Re: It looks like 3 games to the SB

I can see the Browns beating the Broncos....they have been playing well even in their loses.

I saw on a few sport shows that many of the "so called experts" think that it will be the Patriots and the 49er's in the Super Bowl.

I'm also gonna give this prediction... Giants over the Ravens, even if Ray Lewis plays.
The time has come and gone, Here's to the 2014 Season.

Well so mush for the browns doing it for the Pats. Well thank you vikings. Looks like a lose from either the broncos or the texans will still do it. As long as the Patriots play a tad bit better than they did against jacksonville.

Houston is gagging.  The game vs Indy will be a huge one.

Looks like Eli's magic has finally worn off.

I dont think Eli was ever magic   The thing that kept them in games was not Eli, it was the quality play that went on all around him.  The real Eli is being shown for what he really is, a mediocre QB.

Will the colts play their starters and try and win the game is the question. They cant gain any ground in the seedings.I cant count on the lousy chiefs to beat the broncos.Probably Crennel's last game as the head coach of KC.

Re: It looks like 3 games to the SB

Sounds like the Colts are planning to go all out ... makes sense, for a young team like this keeping momentum is crucial ...

Following up on Colts' approach vs. Texans

One storyline we're following closely is how the Colts, who are locked in at the No. 5 seed, will approach their season-finale against the visiting Texans (1 p.m. ET).

If the Colts win, and then the Patriots beat the Dolphins (4:25 p.m. ET), New England would earn a first-round playoff bye.

Because the Colts can't gain anything in the standings, one line of thinking is that they might rest players.

Beat writer Mike Chappell of the Indianapolis Star provides some updates on the Colts' approach, via his Twitter account

A sampling of his Tweets from coach Chuck Pagano's media availability on Wednesday (all comments are from Pagano):

1. "Not in our DNA to pull back on starters. watching what team has done . . . not in our makeup. fans and city deserve our best."

2. "We'd love to win 11 games. That's our goal."

3. "They're going to roll the ball out there and it's our job to give it our best."

4. "You want to win. you want to win at home. you want to go into the playoffs with momentum. we want to keep the momentum going."

5. "To rest guys or pull back, i don't think we have enough numbers to do that."

6. "Our mindset coming in has been we're going to play to win every single week regardless of the situation."

Key to a return to the SB = Protection for Brady in the pocket. SF used a man to man scheme and it worked very well. This " O " line MUST step up.

Re: It looks like 3 games to the SB

I think the weather had a lot to do with the early SF success.

They are subbing in very generously.  That's no excuse for Brady to get killed. If  a bye is at hand (aka Houston loss) It wouldn't surprise me to see them put the peddle to the floor in the first half.  Then run, run and run some more with Mallet at QB.  The field conditions should be a big adv.

Perhaps 2 games to the SB...hopefully the Colts hold on.  I can't remember rooting for them this much.
