This is the game that had more people concerned than the Texans game. SF is more physical and some say better coached than the Texans.

I think this game will be a tougher game although the 49ers offense can look like crap at times.Stopping Gore is a must!!!!

I read somewhere that Talib will be ready to go for the 49ers.Some new england writer wrote about it.

Yeah. The 9'ers D is as hard-hitting as anything the Pats have faced all year. This could also be a preview for the SB.

Re: Official Geme 14 thread: 49ers vs. Patriots

Ball protection is a must. They cannot give the 49ers a short field on offense and then have a long drive and fumble in the red zone. Patriots got really lucky Monday night on a couple of occasions.

Re: Official Geme 14 thread: 49ers vs. Patriots

The Niners defense is much better than the Texans (duh), but their offense isn't as good.  This will be a physical game.  The Pats have finally started getting healthy.  That will help a lot in this one.

Re: Official Geme 14 thread: 49ers vs. Patriots

I think pressure on a QB is a key to every game, though, so that 'key' might be a little broad and overly vague. My point was to note that Brady does well under certain types of pressure (and really against all pressure - his 3.9% sack percentage is the 3rd lowest of his career), and due to the quick release, and no-huddle/up-tempo tenor to their game, I think the bigger key is to stick to their assignments in all phases of defense. If they fail to get pressure oe him, naturally he's going to kill them, but I think they have to be stout everywhere so that they can let their four man front get to him. Cover up his options long enough to give them a shot at getting to him. That's a very different emphasis, imo.

In fact, if you want to be specific, the best way to beat him is to get pressure up the middle. Based on the stats on the year and the film, the key sacks on Brady have typically come up the gut (the quickest most direct way to get to him, in theory). The Ravens killed a drive against Brady in their nailbiter win when Ngata did a spin move and was right on top of Brady before he could make the read. There was a zone blitzing LB on the edge that nearly got to him, too, but it was Ngata that did the damage. On the final drive against Seattle (when Seattle won 24-23), it was Defensive Tackle Jason Jones that blew through and wrapped up Brady to help create a 3rd and long situation.

I actually think Houston's mistake was trying to send too many rushers at Brady too often (they did it 14 times, with two of the plays turning out to be draw plays). They went away from their strengths, and they left openings for Brady to exploit.

I do agree that if they blitz, it might be bringing Willis or Bowman up the middle that gets him, but they have to be careful, because he'll read stunts and he'll locate Hernandez or Gronkowski clearing into the seam that is emptied by the blitzing LB, and these guys are challenges for Willis and Bowman to cover, let alone Smith or Brooks or whomever drops back.

A couple other things worth noting:

- The Patriots have lost 3 games this year by a total of 5 points. The fact that they were 4-3 at one point disguised the fact that they are having quite a dominant season.

- Their current scoring pace will put them at 581 pts for the year, which will be the second highest total only to their 589 points they put up in the year they went 16-0.

This showdown on Sunday is definitely looking like it'll be a classic unstoppable force (NE offense) vs. the immovable object (SF's defense) match-up. I think, whatever the specific 'keys' that anyone wants to point out to victory might be, this is going to be a real litmus test for the 49ers playoffs aspirations.

Re: Official Geme 14 thread: 49ers vs. Patriots

I am hyped for this game!!!  Starting this kind of early!

Going into New England I believe the things CK can do & Harbaugh's coaching will keep the game close.  A win, perhaps, but I feel like we are short changing our beloved team.

I feel the Niners can move the ball on the Patriots.  It seems like that is the secondary match up to the NE offense verses the SF defense.  Let's not short change the SF defense!
I know this is Tom Brady/Bill Belichick and the Patriots but they are beatable.

The Niners defense:
#1 in point allowed
#2 in Pass defense
#2 in not allowing 1st downs
#2 in stopping 3rd down conversions
#2 in run defense

Not sure what happened with Houston but I don't think New England's offense has faced a set of LBs the Niners line up every game.  Aldon Smith get to go against fellow 2011 draft class OT Nate Solder.  I see Aldon Smith winning this battle all day long!

Niners will do what they do best, make opponent's offenses one dimensional.

Re: Official Geme 14 thread: 49ers vs. Patriots

The one weakness the 9'ers seem to have is a below average passing game, they rely on the run. The Pats front-7 is well equipped to stop the run - so if they can manage that, then things get a bit more interesting. A month ago I wouldn't have said that, but the secondary has really picked things up since Talib was signed, and Dennard was made a starter. McCourty is great as a FS when he can face the ball and break on it - very dangerous.

The 9'ers also aren't playing their best football right now. They had trouble with MIA last week, lost in OT to STL the week before.

I don't know how the 9'ers D will handle the Pats O. The Pats in December throw so much at a defense and so fast. The Pats proved something Monday night by running on a good run-stopping D, so I don't expect that to change. They have 4 good RB's, 3 good TE's, and the OL is playing real well. Peterson, Bradshaw, and Jackson were able to run on the 9'ers, so I expect we'll see a lot of Ridley and Bolden.

I see from the forecast they're expecting mid-30's and light snow for the game.

Re: Official Geme 14 thread: 49ers vs. Patriots

New England appears to be at the very top of their game and, apparently getting healthy too. At a -7, the Patriots ripped the Texans from head to toe and, who'de of thought?
Shouldn't be much different at home Sunday Night v. Niners. Who was/is the better team, Houston or San Fran? At this point in the season it's neither one of them. It's New england.
Who the bell leaves their heart in San Francisco? biggrin

Everyone was at practice except Gronk. Welker, Spikes started the session on the stationary bike.

Re: Official Geme 14 thread: 49ers vs. Patriots

I'm not sure what the 49ers offense is going to be able to do without turnovers.  Kaepernick could easily struggle in a big game like this on the road.  If the Patriots hang onto the ball, this could be a 24-10 kind of game.

Full attendance at practices today. Yes, that means Gronk was back but "limited". I'd be amazed if he played. Nineteen players listed as questionable for Sunday.

Also:

RT @MaioccoCSN: Don't expect WR Mario Manmingham (shoulder) to play. He's listed as doubtful. #49ers

Re: Official Geme 14 thread: 49ers vs. Patriots

Kaepernick will be good for at least 1 very bad TO. He's fumbled 5X with 1 IT. He often throws into traffic, and he holds onto it too long.  They are playing a college-like option system on the run. The options are too "me oriented" that is he seems to forget that Gore guy next to him.

I'd feel worse with Smith.

Re: Official Geme 14 thread: 49ers vs. Patriots

I think they let McCourty stay at FS and look to break on the ball. If Talib and Dennard are good to go, then Kaepernick will be putting the ball into tight coverage and may not notice McC roving around. I'm assuming Talib will cover Moss, no way I'd want the rookie on him.

Ninkovich will likely get the call to contain Kaepernick - he's good at that.

Be interesting to see how McD prepares the O. Running on the 9'ers won't be easy, but teams with big backs have managed 100-yard games. So maybe Bolden and Ridley hammer away behind Oh-oh.

Dok, you may not have noticed.  But Moss hardly plays.  He's the least of the Pats worries this week.

Haven't watched the 9'ers much this season, Moss covered by a rookie seems like a mismatch, though.

FWIW ~ Some media outlets reporeting money "flowing" into New england. Some [Media outlets] say no-way they repeat what they did last week. Ok, what seems to be missing in this equation is that New England fans know their team can play shash-mouth ball and keep it clean too. Where one team appears to be hot, the other is not. December in Foxboro is a dream killer for so many teams and this year is no different.
To the man, you got to believe the Patriot players are well aware of whats at stake in todays game.
The only question here is can New England beat the spread? I say they will!

I don't think the pundits factored in the weather. With Snow/sleet/freezing rain the offenses will have an advantage.

Inactive players for Patriots: TE Rob Gronkowski; S Derrick Martin; LB Tracy White; OL Markus Zusevics, DE Jake Bequette, DL Ron Brace.

James Develin is active for the first time in his three-year career. Good for him.

(Develin is the converted DE/LB to FB ... so looks like they intend to run the ball. )

As expected, Randy Moss will start in place of Mario Manningham. #49ers

Re: Official Geme 14 thread: 49ers vs. Patriots

I'm more nervous about this one than last week's game.  Probably because SF's D is a lot better.  For the Pats D, they should be able to contain Kapernick but there's always the threat of a big play with a guy like that.

Defense is keeping them in the game.

Another 3-and-out.

As expected, Nink is spying on Kaepernick.

Wow. This is the worst I have seen the Pats play in 20 years. I know the 49ers are an ok team, but they are the same team that cant be a horrible Rams team. I think its safe to say the Pats have let their A game at home. This is gonna be a blow out.

Re: Official Geme 14 thread: 49ers vs. Patriots

The Niners are doing a good job of exposing the Pats LB's. They are horrible in the passing game and Gregory has been brutally bad so far. Add to that Jones and Niko have done NOTHING at all and you have the making of a blow out.

And Brady has been way off this game. You can see him flustered. It reminds me of games against the Giants where you can just see that Brady is confused and scared.
