A Kansas City Chiefs player died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound Saturday morning at the team's training facility, Kansas City Police Communications Supervisor Kathy Childs said.
The shooting occurred at 8:10 a.m. local time at the team's facility near Arrowhead Stadium, Childs said. She said police know the name of the player, but declined to release his name since the shooting was still under investigation.
The player was also suspected in a related shooting of a young woman at a nearby resident, Kansas City Police spokesman Darin Snapp told NFL.com's Albert Breer. "About (7:50 a.m), we got a call to a residence, in regards to a shooting, on the 5400 block of Crysler Ave,â said Snapp, by phone. âWe arrived and the lady there informed us that her daughter had been shot by her on-again, off-again boyfriend. The young woman was taken to a local hospital, where she died a short time later.
"At about 8:10 a.m., we received a call to the Arrowhead practice facility in regards to a black male armed with a gun in the parking lot, and he matched the description of the shooting suspect," Snapp continued. "Officers arrived, saw a black man with a gun to his head, and some Chiefs employees. As the officer got out of his car, he heard a gunshot. It appeared the individual shot himself. He was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead."
Snapp said the shooting occurred outside the front doors of the facility.
The Chiefs have released a statement in regard to the incident: "We can confirm that there was an incident at Arrowhead earlier this morning. We are cooperating with authorities in their investigation."
The Chiefs are scheduled to play host to the Carolina Panthers on Sunday.

Hell. 6th round pick, small-school, worked his way to being an NFL starter, only 25 years old. There's got to be more going on here.
...
This just came up on Twitter: Per the KCPD, the player approached Pioli and Crennel and thanked them, then walked away and shot himself.

Chiefs player Jovan Belcher kills girlfriend, then himselfKansas City Chiefs linebacker Jovan Belcher this morning shot and killed his girlfriend before going to Arrowhead Stadium and fatally shooting himself as team personnel tried to stop him, police said.
Police Capt. David Lindaman said Belcher, 25, and his girlfriend, 22, got into an argument around 7 a.m. at their home in the 5400 block of Crysler Avenue in Kansas City. Around 7:50 a.m., Lindaman said, Belcher shot his girlfriend multiple times. She was taken to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
The Star is not naming the victim at this time pending assurances that her family has been notified.
Lindaman said Belcher’s mother, who was visiting the couple and their 3-month-old daughter, witnessed the shooting and was being interviewed by police. Belcher left the scene on Crysler and went to the Chiefs practice facility at Arrowhead, police said.
Police were called to the stadium around 8:10 a.m. When Belcher arrived there he encountered General Manager Scott Pioli, Coach Romeo Crennel and other team personnel. Police said Chiefs staff attempted to keep Belcher from committing additional acts of violence. When police arrived, they heard a gunshot and found that Belcher had shot himself in the head.
The Chiefs released the following statement: “We can confirm that there was an incident at Arrowhead earlier this morning. We are cooperating with authorites in their investigation.” Outside the home on Crysler, Jennifer Ashley, who said she was a friend of Belcher’s girlfriend, said the woman was a student at Blue River Community College in Independence and had started dating Belcher after being introduced to him by the girlfriend of another Chiefs player.
Belcher, originally from Long Island, N.Y., had been with the Chiefs for four years. He joined the team as an undrafted free agent out of the University of Maine. Read more here: http://www.kansascity.com/2012/12/01/3943246/chief s-player-kills-girlfriend.html#storylink=cpy

For a man to kill the mother of his three month old child makes him the lowest kind of scum in my book. God bless the womans family and that poor little girl. Thanks to him for saving the state the cost of a trial and lengthy incarceration.

Re: Please send prayer to the Chiefs organization
There's more going on than is being told. I can see a retired guy like Seau ending it - but this kid had everything to look forward to and was "living his dream" as they say.
He clearly should have just walkout out of the house instead of pulling a gun, but what made him flip out? It had to be something and it clearly wasn't football related.

Re: Please send prayer to the Chiefs organization
I just don't get why they are playing this game today! It has no impact on Playoff standings, and could very easily be played during Wild Card weekend!
How does Romeo even attempt to be able to focus on this game?
How do the players funnel their emotions toward the playing field today?
This wasn't a car accident or some other natural tragedy. This was a murder-suicide!
So many questions the players must have as to how this whole thing played out,and could anyone of them have been able to talk Jovan out of committing this senseless act.
The NFL is a cold, money hungry machine that is definitely showing it's true colors during this sad,sad time!!!

Re: Please send prayer to the Chiefs organization
Tedy I think it's a no-win situation for the NFL. They can't just not play the game. A lot of people paid money for it. Maybe they refund them all? But there's more to it.
Even though it's two teams that are out of the playoff hunt, their final records can still affect playoff contending teams in terms of tie-breakers at the end of the season. It's unfortunate that there are no more bye weeks where maybe they could move the game there. I suppose they could play it later in the day, or maybe play it Monday, just to give a little more time for the dust to settle, so to speak. But does moving it back just a little accomplish anything? The game needs to be played and it's going to be very hard for players to focus. But I don't really know what else the league can do. It's one of those things. Sometimes life throws a haymaker at you. But you kind of have to keep going.

Yeah,I suppose for the sake of not confusing the Playoff picture. But even for that reason,it is still going to be tough on a lot of people!!

Also, for the 3 hours of the game, they won't be thinking about what happened yesterday. Sometimes just getting back to work is the best thing for the living.

Re: Please send prayer to the Chiefs organization
Definitely, prayers and thoughts go out to the mother, the family, the chiefs and the grandmother, but remember this coward not only took his life but he took the life of the mother of his new born. It`s kind of scary how unstable a person can be and no one knows about it...

Re: Please send prayer to the Chiefs & Browns organizations,
We see guys who play the day they lose a relative. I don't see this as so different a case. But that's just me. I think if I were on the team I'd want to go play and for a few hours not have to think about what just happened. If it was a different HC than Romeo, I'd have more concerns - but Romeo is a player's coach and he got buy-in from all the team captains before announcing the decision.

Re: Please send prayer to the Chiefs & Browns organizations, (1 vote)
People may or may notg like what I'm about to say but this is how I truly feel. Belcher is a murderer and a coward. I feel no sympathy his way. I feel for the woman he murdered Kasandra Perkins and most of all for the little girl who will now grow up without parents.
I feel for the mother who watched her child get shot 9 times. and now when she should be enjoying her years has to raise a child again. If I were a Chiefs player yes I would have played the game. This is different from him being murdered. He committed the cowardly act of suicide but not before he murdered a woman in cold blood.
They left his locker in tack (The Chiefs). They should have taken that crap down for the simple fact he committed murder. He does not deserve to haver his locker in tack.

Re: Please send prayer to the Chiefs organization
Since I really don't know anything about the guy or what may have been going on in his mind, I try not to judge him. Whether or not the argument about a concert is really what happened, I don't know. That would be just insane to do something like that for that reason.
But this much is true. If a guy would kill the woman who just gave birth to his daughter a few months ago, it's highly unlikely that this is the first instance of violence by him toward her. It's just such a sad story, and you only wish someone could have helped her get out of that situation.
Big props to Romeo, though. Probably one of the best people the players could have to lead them this day. While I don't actually think he's a great head coach, he is to be admired here. Just sorry he had to witness what he did.

Re: Please send prayer to the Chiefs organization
More details are coming out now [link].The Kansas City Star reported Tuesday that upon hearing gunshots, Belcher's mother ran from the kitchen and saw the Kansas City Chiefs linebacker leaning over Kasandra Perkins in the master bathroom, telling his longtime girlfriend he was sorry and giving her a kiss on the forehead. Belcher then apologized to his mother, kissed his 3-month-old daughter and fled the home in his Bentley.[...]The Star reported, according to sources, that arguments over their relationship and finances had become regular for Belcher and Perkins in the months preceding the murder.OK ... so, like, if they're arguing about money, and just had a kid, why is he still driving a Bentley?

Some nut shoots up a school and I'm supposed to give up MY guns? Not NO but Hell NO! I went out and bought an AK-47 with 3 30round clips and a 75 round drum today because it may not be for sale tomorrow. One thing is for sure, if a nut starts shooting anywhere near me I'll be returning accurate fire.
