Stallworthn, Gaffney or Branch coming back??? ...

Julian Edelman New England Patriots

Joe Camporeale-US Presswire

On Friday wide receiver Greg Salas was signed by the Philadelphia Eagles.  This move along with a recent injury to Julian Edelman possibly leaves the New England Patriots with only three receivers.  Adding a receiver for their upcoming game is a must and it very well could be a familiar face.

Prior to Thursday night’s tilt with the New York Jets, the Patriots made the decision to waive Salas and activate rookie tackle Markus Zusevics.  Salas has been the Patriots fourth receiver behind Edelman, Brandon Lloyd, and Wes Welker.  But after a possible unfortunate personnel loss in Thursday’s game, the Patriots may have been ready to bring him back.

These days head injuries are a top priority in the NFL.  For a player to return following a head injury, he must pass multiple tests before he’s allowed back on the practice field or even in film sessions.  On Thursday night Edelman suffered an unspecified head injury.  While it’s still unclear how serious the injury is, it very well could be a concussion.

If Edelman does have a concussion, there’s a good chance he could be out at least next week and possibly longer.  If so, the Patriots have a problem.  With Salas no longer an option, the Patriots have four receivers on their active roster and only three if Edelman is unable to play.  Lloyd and Welker have been the team’s top two receivers most of the year but the other receiver, Matthew Slater, has seen minimal playing time.

In addition to a lack of receivers, the Patriots are still without star tight end Rob Gronkowski who continues to recover from an arm injury that required surgery earlier this week.  With Gronkowski the Patriots could deal with a lack of wide receivers as the injured tight end creates matchup problems in the passing game.  But with both Edelman and Gronkowski out, the Patriots may be looking for a replacement.

A quick look at current free agents will show that three of the top candidates to be signed are former Patriots.  Chad Johnson, formerly Ochocinco, was in training camp with the Miami Dolphins after being released by the Patriots.  However, he was arrested for a domestic dispute and was subsequently released.  Donte’ Stallworth spent the 2007 season in New England and went through training camp this season with the Patriots.   But just before the season started he was cut along with another former Patriot Jabar Gaffney.   Both Johnson and Stallworth are currently looking for teams and could be a possibility.

The most probable candidate is Deion Branch.  Branch was waived just a week ago to make room for the newly acquired defensive back Aqib Talib.  His place in the lineup was taken by Salas who was later signed from the practice squad.  Branch was said to have a hamstring injury but it still unknown if it was serious.  Branch could be set for a return at least until Edelman is healthy enough to play.

When the Patriots waived Salas they didn’t know that they were in danger of losing two receivers.  But Edelman was lost to a head injury in Thursday night’s game and Salas was signed by the Eagles on Friday.  With a lack of personnel the Patriots are now in a position where they need another wide receiver which could mean a return to New England for one of three players.

Re: Stallworthn, Gaffney or Branch coming back??? ...

As of this morning it's being reported that Branch's locker is still intact.

Also, WR Jeremy Ebert, a Northwestern product the #Patriots drafted in 7th round this year, will re-join the team as a member of practice squad.

Gaffney has to wait a couple weeks to clear his suspension ... which relates to something that happened with a 2010 arrest.

Stallworth ... who knows ... I like the guy, but they cut him for a reason.

I agree that Branch is the most likely to come back. All they really need is a safety valve for Brady on 3rd downs and Branch looked best in that role.

The Patriots should bring back one of the 3 veterans mentioned with Branch being the likely one. However Edelman does have 3 extra days to receover because it happened on Thurdsay instead of Sunday.

Looks like Jeremy Ebert might come back.I dont know why they released him. This guy had a ridiculous combine.I believe he ran a 4.38 40.Why not try and work with him.He could be another weapon at the slot.

Ebert signed to the Practice squad today.

He's very very raw.  Needs a long time to develop

This is why depth at the WR position is so important.   It is one of the most critically fundamental skill positions, and the QB needs to have people that he can really depend upon who have some consistency and familiarity -- throughout the entire season ... regardless of any injuries.

It's a little too late to consider anyone but Deion Branch at this point.

The timing of the Eldeman injury was bad, because he was just starting to really come on as a big contributor in the passing game.  His 56-yard TD in the Jets game was a better stretch of the defense than anything Brandon Lloyd has been able to produce all season long.

And Branch doesn't really provide that either (anymore).

Game day and no other WR's have been signed.  That must mean Edelman is good to go.  It may also mean Branch is not healthy.  BB probably has him on speed dial though, and I don't know where he lives but I suspect he's still in the area ready to get back to work if/when he gets the call.

I like Stallworth but Branch must be hurt.  Branch has experience with us playing this season and I don't think Stallworth makes up for that experience with talent.

Stallworth can return kicks - they had him working on that in pre-season.

Good Bad or Ugly Stallworth also has motivation.  He is back with the Pats and you can bet he would love to stay there..  If he was serious about the game and getting a job this year I would hope he stayed in shape.  If not, It will show the first play they put him in.

On another not.  The Pats brought him in for a workout so they must have seen something there.  I will defer to the front office on this one.

Re: Stallworthn, Gaffney or Branch coming back??? ...

You should have seen the tweets from Stallworth this summer when the Pats signed him. He was taking pictures all around Boston. So happy to be back.

I'm seeing reports now that Edelman has a broken foot - will need surgery and rehab. He's in the final year of his contract, so that adds intrigue to the situation. But I'd be amazed if they didn't give him a new contract - he can play in all 3 phases of the game, and play well in them.

---- edit ----

Looks like a fractured foot for Edelman, season-ending IR. Damn, he was really starting to show some moves too.

That's what i think Branch must have been hurt when they dropped him and is still hurt.  Stallworth might take Edelman's AND some of Lloyd's playing time.
