Bucs trade CB Aqib Talib to the Patriots

Talib is currently suspended by the NFL (yet another adderall suspension), and is to be reinstated on Monday

Hasn't been announced what the Pats gave up yet.

With all the roster moves over last couple days i was hoping something like this would happen, this should be a decent upgrade

Now that is about the best news I`ve seen in a while with the Pats. The fact that they are recognizing the problem and are at least taking a chance with a bigger name.

I hope this move works

The trade details: CB Aqib Talib and a 2013 7th-round pick for a 2013 4th-round pick.

Re: Bucs trade CB Aqib Talib to the Patriots

Bruschi's take on this:

What does the acquisition of cornerback Aqib Talib mean for the Patriots? ESPN analyst and former Patriots linebacker Tedy Bruschi gives his instant analysis in the video above.

“Coach Belichick has been doing everything he possibly could to fix that secondary, moving their best cornerback in Devin McCourty to play safety,” Bruschi says. “So you have to think about what that does now with the dynamic. You bring in another corner, so is McCourty there to stay? Or do you bump him back to corner and have Talib and McCourty there? Now he has more options to really shore up that secondary.”

Bruschi also reflected on why the Patriots made the move, which came right at the NFL’s 4 p.m. trade deadline:

“I think this is a sign, a sign of how coach Belichick was so frustrated with his defensive secondary,” Bruschi says.” The one thing I know about Belichick is this: What really gets under his skin is when you’re an error repeater. And that’s what has been happening with this defensive secondary. Up in Seattle, the post-corner-post that gave up the big gain to Sidney Rice that sealed the game, also was the same play the St. Louis Rams were able to complete early in Sunday’s game. Same exact play. And that’s what drives him crazy and that’s what drove him to finally make a move with this.”

Re: Bucs trade CB Aqib Talib to the Patriots

I have to applaud the effort.  If it doesn't work out, they have at least tried to fix the mess that is the secondary.  If it does work out, they just got a huge piece of the only real weakness on the team and have a tall CB that can keep up with the tall receivers down the field.

One thing this tells me though is that I doubt the Patriots keep their 1st round pick now.  They have a 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and a couple 7ths.

I also saw that Talib was praised in TB for being strong enough to play TE's if need be.

He'll have to sit through the Week 10 game v. Buffalo, can report to team facility the day after. I hope he's ready to play for the Jets.

Since BB is on good terms with Schiano, I assume he got the full disclosure on what he was getting. I doubt there will be any surprises; not to mention the Pats scouted him heavily the year he was drafted.

Looks like a good move here ....

This guy is a headache, and could be a real problem, but if they can get him to focus on Football....he does have enough talent to help them out.

But why did they get rid of Sterling Moore?  They're already short in the Secondary with all of the injuries, and they need more bodies for their various nickle and dime packages.  They have a depth problem ... even with Talib (and even if he works out for them).

McCourty could move to safety, if they had more depth at CB.

Definitely an upgrade over Sterling Moore.  Talib's a pretty good player.  I like him.  Now if he can just stay off the PED's and stop shooting his sister's boyfriends, he could be a big help.

As mentioned the one tough effect of this is they are running out of draft picks for next year.  So if they have many holes they want to fill after this season, they will have to either do it through free agency or by trading down a bunch in the draft to get more picks.

He was suspended for adderal. Same thing Spikes was suspended for.  If he has a legit reason (like Spikes) for taking adderal the league should be ashamed of themselves.

Near as I can piece together, he took Adderall without a prescription at the beginning of training camp, before he got to know Schiano. Here is the statement he issued after the incident:

"I made a mistake by taking an Adderall pill without a prescription. This is especially regrettable because, for the past several months, with Coach Schiano's help, I've worked very hard to improve myself -- professionally and personally -- as a player and a man," Talib said.

"I am truly sorry to my teammates, coaches and Buccaneers fans, and I'm disappointed in myself. I will work diligently every day of this suspension to stay in top football shape and be ready to help this team in the second half of the season. I have chosen to be immediately accountable for the situation I put myself in, which is why I will not exercise my appeal rights and will begin serving the suspension immediately."

They needed to change something and I guess changing personnel was the answer.  It took a long time for them to come around to this.  At this point, it's a bit of a desperate move, but one that probably had to be made if they are going to contend.  It will be well worth the trade if they can just get competent play from the secondary.

The injuries to Gregory and Chung I think also factored into this. McCourty does better at S and now they need him there to offset the injuries. If BB can make this one work out, it's an even more amazing testament to his individual coaching skill than turning around Moss or Dillon.

I don't think BB had to do much with Dillon to turn it around. The man just wanted to win. With happening will BB look at the coaching staff and see that there is a problem there as well? Boyer should still be replaced IMO.

Re: Bucs trade CB Aqib Talib to the Patriots

When Dillon came to Foxboro the Pats weren't quite cemented as a dynasty yet. So I think BB's influence had some impact.

I agree Boyer has to go. In a passing league the secondary coach(es) are just as important as the QB/WR/TE coaches. And the Pats' suuuuuuuuck.

Re: Bucs trade CB Aqib Talib to the Patriots

Dillon was always a good player. A very good player. His issue was The Bengals. The Patriots gave Dillon the opportunity to just be a football player. The ability to just" Do his job". And that is what he needed. I hope Aqib will be the same way. This can end up being a very nice trade for the Pats. A low risk, High reward type of deal.

It was only a 4th round pick to rent a CB for the rest of the year. It's not like Bill could find a Hernandez, Ghost, or Samuels in the 4th round.

Re: Bucs trade CB Aqib Talib to the Patriots

True, Dillon could and did always play hard. But if you remember the relationship he had with the Bengals FO and the fans, there was a lot to be concerned about.

Moss was similar - all the arrests, taking plays off, mouthing off at everyone. I for one was dead certain that no way, no how BB would bring that kind of player to NE.

Hopefully the change in location and atmosphere is what Talib needs to get his life back on track. Tampa isn't exactly the best place for a young, hot-headed player. Lots of ways to get into trouble - strip-club capital of the country. And the Bucs haven't been a very buttoned-down organization in a long while.

I'm already going to assume he'll have face time with RK and BB long before he's handed a playbook. And that what's at stake for the team and for him will be clearly outlined.

Good article on Talib. Hopefully being around the Pats organization will bring the good parts of his character out.

Re: Bucs trade CB Aqib Talib to the Patriots

Another article on Talib.

He seems to have a lot of really good character points. Which begs the question: why the hell does he keep screwing up?

Hopefully being around people like Vince, Nink, Mayo, Pepper Johnson will have the desired effect.
