Kendall Baisden ( 400 Meter Dash 52.60 )

A rising superstar as a freshman and sophomore, Kendall Baisden proved she is "back" on Sunday by placing third behind two collegians in the 400-meter dash during the USATF Junior Nationals in Bloomington, Ind.

The incoming senior from Detroit Country Day (Beverly Hills, Mich.), who missed a month of the season due to a hamstring injury, was timed in 52.6 seconds. The top six finishers will go to Barcelona, Spain for the IAAF World Juniors, but only the top two will run the open 400. Baisden will be among the other four who will run either or both of the 4x100 and 4x400 relays

Wow - that is a wicked fast time for the 400m.  I wonder if she'll compete at the 100m too or maybe the 800m?

FOOTBALL / TRACK

Devon Allen            10.48 / 20.75  /  13.52  / 36.39

Four-star WR Devon Allen pledges to Oregon after receiving long awaited football offer

Wide receiver Devon Allen, one of the top 2013 recruits from the state of Arizona, has decided to join Oregon, according to Fox Sports' Inna Lazarev. The Ducks emerged from a large group of interested teams to secure his commitment.

The 6'1'', 187-pound Brophy Prep star didn't receive as much hype during the recruitment process as some of this year's other top receivers. That's most likely because he doesn't have as much upside as some of the class' elite wideouts.

On the other hand, Allen is ready to help right away.

According to 247Sports' composite rankings, Allen is a 4-star prospect and the 38th-best prospect at his position. He ranks as the No. 263 overall recruit and the fourth-best athlete coming out of Arizona this year.

A strong junior season put him on the national radar, leading to programs from around the country tracking him as a senior. More than 30 schools were involved.

Allen has shown good quickness and route-running ability, which is a crucial skill when it comes to recruits making their presence felt right away at the college level. It's something a lot of players struggle with at first.

Since Allen has already shown strong development in that area, he should have no problem earning the trust of the coaching staff. He's the type of player who can play on the outside or move into the slot to work the inside routes.

Questions about his big-play ability are the only reason he wasn't ranked higher. Coaches are always seeking players who can turn an eight-yard catch into a 80-yard touchdown simply by making a few moves and taking off.

It isn't clear if Allen will be able to do that once the speed of the game picks up in college. If he can, though, the high school standout will turn into a major steal because he's strong in several other areas as well. His track background should certainly help.

All told, he's the type of player that shouldn't have much trouble carving out a niche for himself. Since he's able to do so many things well, the coaching staff will be able to find ways to get him involved, even if he's not a top option in the passing game right away.

Those are the players that can turn a good class into a great class. They aren't No. 1 or No. 2 on any ranking lists, but they come in and contribute. That's more important than any star rating.

Allen fits the bill, and he should excel at the collegiate level.

Jeffrey Prothro Jr. ( 48 feet 10" TJ )

James Logan's Jeffrey Prothro Jr. commits to UCLA for track and field

James Logan High's Jeffrey Prothro Jr. orally committed to UCLA on Wednesday to compete in track and field.

"I felt that was the best place for me," he said.

Prothro placed fourth in the boys triple jump at the 2012 state championships in June with a mark of 48 feet, 101/4 inches. That was the sixth-best mark in the state all season and ranked 21st in the nation.

Prothro has also had an outstanding football season this year for the Colts, quarterbacking them to a North Coast Section Division I semifinal matchup against No. 2 California on Saturday.

Third-seeded James Logan is 11-1 and has averaged more than 44 points per game this season.

Prothro said the UCLA football program did not recruit him, and that he considered pursuing a football scholarship to other colleges, "but the (recruiting interest) was kind of quiet."

Prothro said he also seriously considered Texas A&M to compete in track and field.

"But it was a little far. I just felt more comfortable at UCLA. It's close to home, but it's far enough," said Prothro, who took official visits to both universities.

"I felt very welcomed when I went (to UCLA for an official visit). The coaches and athletes made me feel at home. I could see myself being there and being successful."

Re: MENS ROSTER ADDITIONS

I think we picked up this javelin thrower too.  Not sure why he's not listed on the roster.

Boys track: Newberg senior Cody Danielson soars in first season in javelin

Jerry Ulmer, The OregonianMay 09, 2012 2 p.m.

Newberg's Cody Danielson, throwing at the Centennial Invitational on April 28, has surpassed 204 feet in his last four meets. - (Doug Beghtel/The Oregonian)

Under the tutelage of one of the state’s best javelin coaches, Newberg’s Cody Danielson has made a startling ascent in his rookie season of track and field.

The senior threw the javelin 207 feet, 10 inches Friday in the Nike/Jesuit Twilight Relays, the best mark in the state this season and No. 6 in the nation. He has been making steady progress under Newberg assistant Joe Boutin, who has coached 10 javelin state champions in his four decades with the Tigers.

“He came into track not really knowing about throwing,” Newberg coach Brandon Ramey said of Danielson. “He was just going to try to stay in shape so he could walk-on for football somewhere. Boutin called him over and he went to work right away. He’s getting some calls now from schools to maybe go throw there.”

The 6-foot-4, 235-pound Danielson, a tight end on the football team, played baseball in his first three years at Newberg. He decided not to play baseball this spring because of soreness in his non-throwing shoulder, and gave track a try.

He threw 201-11 at the Aloha Relays on April 13, 204-11 at the Centennial Invitational on April 28 and took another step forward Friday at Jesuit. The mark moved him ahead of Roseburg senior Selmar Hutchins III (207-7) on the state’s best list.

“It’s pretty impressive what he’s been able to do so far,” Ramey said. “There are definitely some bigger throws in his future, it’s just a matter of getting a little bit more technique.

“He’s powering things out there right now. If he continues to work on his technique, I think colleges have to see that he’s got a lot of potential.”

And just because he specializes in coaching one event, don’t mistake Boutin for a coach who demands 365 days of focus on just one sport. In fact, it’s quite the opposite, as most of his highest-achieving throwers were multiple-sport athletes, including several who didn’t come out until their senior years before going on to star in college or beyond, like 2012 Olympian Cyrus Hostetler and 2012 NHS grad Cody Danielson, who will compete for UCLA next spring.

Kendall Baisden ( 52.60 )

Detroit Country Day track star Kendall Baisden signs with UCLA to end national recruiting campaign

Kendall Baisden was all smiles after announcing that she would be attending UCLA for her collegiate track and field career. - (Jared Purcell | japurcell@mlive.com)

The early bird gets the worm. That famous saying is what ULCA must be thinking now that it has signed on Detroit Country Day track and field star, Kendall Baisden.

Being the first school to offer Baisden when she was just a freshman, the nationally-ranked sprinter publicly announced she will be a Bruin next year alongside of many of her fellow collegiate-bound classmates on Wednesday.

"They (UCLA) were actually my first letter ever my freshman year," Baisden said. "I remember I came to the athletic office and there was a (recruiting) letter for me. I was like, 'Wow, already?'"

In actuality, Baisden may have been the only one surprised that she was sought after at such a young age. All you have to do is look at her track record, literally.

Through her first three seasons of track, Baisden has eight state championship medals: three in the 40 meter dash, two in the 100 meter, one in the 100 meter, and two relay gold medals in the 4x100 and 4x200.

However, the national and international stage is where Baisden has shined the brightest. Before she was even in seventh grade, Baisden ran an AAU age group record of 57.68 in the 400 - a time most high school girls in that event could never run.

Since then, Baisden has gone on to represent the United States at the World Junior Championships where, in 2012, she won a gold medal as part of the USA 4x400 team. She got her 400 meter time down to 52.6 seconds last spring, which was the third-fastest time of any high school girl in the nation that season, according to athletic.net.

As Baisden prepares for her senior season this spring, Baisden continues to focus on the future.

"I feel really happy," Baisden said. "Part of my goal is that I can become pro. By going to UCLA, I can receive a good degree. So, for this season, I'm just trying to go out strong, break a few records outdoor and indoor."

Baisden was the only girl among the 10 athletes that attended the signing ceremony, as four football players announced where they will be attending school next year.

More Country Day athletes heading to the next level include Oliver Harris (soccer, Notre Dame), Max Shanbrom (tennis, Loyola University Maryland), Brenton Desai (soccer, University of Chicago), Sven Kranz (tennis, University of Chicago) and Andrew Weinert (lacrosse, Kenyon)

Jeffrey Prothro Jr. To TEXAS A&M

Texas A&M adds 17 athletes amid talented and versatile recruiting class

COLLEGE STATION – Texas A&M added a talented and versatile group of athletes on national signing day as 17 individuals (10 men, seven women) signed a national letter of intent to join the Aggie track and field program for the 2013-2014 season.

“This first signing group we’ve had for this season, I’m very pleased with,” said Texas A&M head coach Pat Henry. “We addressed some needs and areas that we will be losing some talent in after this season. We gain some great talent with this group that signed with us today. It’s a typical class for us. I think we’ve done well, but we can always do better.”

A dozen of the athletes nationally-ranked Texas A&M signed are Texas natives, while the Aggies will also bring in three from Illinois, one from California and a Bahamas native currently in a Texas junior college.

“On our team we have right at 100 Texans,” noted Henry.

“But you also have to recruit people from all over the country. We were fortunate in signing a couple of ladies out of Illinois, who are very talented. We were able to get a couple of sprinters from junior college, one of which was already able to join us in January, as well as jumper from California and a distance runner out of Illinois.”

The men’s signing class includes

Austin Cook (New London, Texas, Overton HS),

Shavez Hart (Freeport, Bahamas, South Plains JC),

Xavier Jimenez (Clute, Texas, Brazoswood HS),

Jeffrey Protho (Union City, Calif., James Logan HS),

Alex Riba (O’Fallon, Illinois, O’Fallon HS),

Dallas Rushing (Waco, Texas, Axtell HS),

Bralon Taplin (Round Rock, Texas, Stony Point HS),

Ryan Teel (Friendswood, Texas, Friendswood HS),

Cameron Villarreal (Arlington, Texas, Martin HS), and

Austin Wells (San Antonio, Texas, Clark HS).

Among the women’s signing class are

Lauren Bedrich (Rogers, Texas, Rogers HS),

Aaliyah Brown (Frankfort, Illinois, Lincoln-Way East HS),

Karis Jochen (College Station, Texas, A&M Consolidated HS),

Lyric Lawrence (Ft. Worth, Texas, Saginaw HS),

Shelby Leppin (Cedar Park, Texas, Cedar Park HS),

Shamier Little (Chicago, Illinois, Lindblom College Prep), and

Katie Willard (The Woodlands, Texas, The Woodlands HS).

“The versatility of this group is strong,” said Henry. “If you look at a guy like Cook, who is a two-time State champion in the discus, we think he can be a very good hammer thrower. We see some talent in these young people and hopefully made some good educated guesses on a couple of others in this class, who we hope continue to become better athletes.”

Hart, a basketball player in the Bahamas at St. George high school, started competing in track and field in 2010 and has excelled in a short time frame.

As a freshman at South Plains junior college in 2012 Hart was a double NJCAA champion, winning titles in the 100 (10.28) and 200 (21.02).

He also ran a leg on the NJCAA silver medalist 4x100 relay (39.94).

Internationally, Hart was a member of the Bahamas junior team that set a national junior record (40.26) in claiming a bronze medal at the 2011 Pan Am Junior Championships.

Taplin, a teammate of Hart’s at South Plains, joined the Aggies in January.

Taplin won the 2012 NJCAA 400 meters in 46.00 after recording a career best of 45.36 during the season.

As a freshman in 2011, Taplin finished second in the 400 at the NJCAA Championships, indoor and outdoor. Taplin was also a member of the 4x400 relay that claimed four NJCAA titles during his two seasons with the program.

A&M’s signing class includes a pair of Gatorade Athletes of the Year from their respective states. Karis Jochen, a local product who competes at A&M Consolidated in College Station, received the prestigious honor this fall in cross country as she successfully defended her State 5A title and placed fifth nationally at the Nike and Foot Locker competitions.

Aaliyah Brown earned the Illinois Gatorade honor in track and field following a season in which she won the 200 State 3A title and finished second in the 100 while being part of runner-up finishes in the 4x100 and 4x400 relays for Lincoln-Way East high school in Frankfort, Illinois.

As a sophomore, Brown won three Illinois State titles in the 100, 200 and 4x100 relay. Brown recorded career best times of 11.48 and 23.96 in sweeping the sprint events at the Arcadia Invitational in California last season.

A three-event Illinois State 2A champion, Shamier Little won titles in the 400, 100 hurdles and 300 hurdles while placing second in the 200 to place third in team scoring for Lindblom in Chicago. She sports career best marks of 24.48 (200), 53.46 (400), 13.79 (100H), and 57.44 (400H).

Little earned international experience this past summer as a member of the USA junior team that competed in Barcelona, Spain. As a sophomore she won Illinois State 2A titles in the 100 hurdles and 400 while placing third in 200.

Another Illinois signing for the Aggies is Alex Riba, a distance runner from O’Fallon. Riba, recently named the St. Louis Post-Dispatch Athlete of the Year in cross country, was the 2012 Nike Midwest Region champion. After placing second in the 2011 Illinois State 3A cross country meet, Riba placed fourth this past fall.

A triple jumper from Union City, California, Jeffrey Protho placed fourth in the 2012 California State meet with a best of 48-10.25.

His junior season included a runner-up finish at Arcadia (48-1 ¼) before winning three consecutive meets – Sacramento (48-0 ½), NCS Bayshore (48-3) and NCS Meet of Champions (47-10 ¾ w).

This past fall as quarterback, Protho threw 24 touchdown passes with only a couple of interceptions as James Logan high school produced a 12-2 record and averaged 44 points per game in reaching the North Coast Section Division I championship game.

Austin Cook has claimed the past two State 1A discus titles for Overton high school and added a runner-up finish in the shot put in 2012 after placing fourth in 2011. Cook dominated 1A competition with discus throws in excess of 170 feet.

Competing against larger classifications during the Texas Relays, Cook placed fifth in the discus in 2012 and sixth in 2011.

State champions from Texas in this recruiting class include Ryan Teel of Friendswood, Dallas Rushing of Axtell and Katie Willard of The Woodlands.

Recently named the 2012 Houston Chronicle Athlete of the Year in cross country, Teel won State 4A titles in 2011 and 2012. Teel has also qualified for the Nike national cross country meet the past two years. This past track and field season he claimed a distance double at the State meet in winning the 1,600 (4:15.69) and 3,200 (9:14.82).

Rushing won the State 2A title in the 1,600 last year, and claimed the 1A title in cross country this past fall. Willard won the 2012 State 5A title in the 800 with a 2:10.31 after recording a best of 2:10.01 in winning the Region II-5A title as a junior. She also posted a best of 4:58.91 in the 1,600 during the 2011 season.

Lauren Bedrich of Rogers and Lyric Lawrence of Ft. Worth Saginaw supply their respective schools with multiple scoring opportunities on the State level.

In the State 2A meet Bedrich finished second in the 100 hurdles and 300 hurdles while adding points in the long jump and triple jump. She also ran on the 4x100 relay that placed sixth. Lawrence, the younger sister of current Aggie All-American Donique’ Flemings, qualified for the State 5A final in the 100 and 300 hurdles after winning the Region I-5A titles in both events.

Cedar Park’s Shelby Leppin won a district title in the 100 this past season and finished second in the district pole vault as a sophomore.

Distance depth in this recruiting class is supplied by Xavier Jimenez of Brazoswood, Cameron Villarreal of Arlington Martin, and Austin Wells of San Antonio Clark.

Wells earned the 2012 San Antonio Express-News Runner of the Year in cross county as he placed 11th in the State 5A race and ninth at the Nike South Region meet. Villarreal placed sixth in the Nike South Region and was sixth in the Region I-5A race. Jimenez finished 13th in the State 5A meet and placed 12th in the Nike South Region.

UCLA TRACK SIGNINGS

Track & Field Reveals First Signings of 2013 Class Director of Track & Field Mike Maynard signs three to NLIs

Feb. 7, 2013

Director of track and field Mike Maynard has announced the signings of

Kendall Baisden, Daniel De La Torre and Paige Tennison to National Letters-of-Intent.

Baisden, De La Torre and Tennison are the first student-athletes, in what is expected to be a strong class, to have signed on to join the Bruins this fall.

"I had the opportunity to watch Kendall run in Barcelona last summer at the World Juniors,” said Maynard. “She is not only exceptionally talented, but her personal poise and effort level shine through as a competitor.

I believe that Kendall will add to the fine legacy of her Bruin predecessors in the 200m and 400m here at UCLA."

A native of Detroit, Mich., Kendall won a gold medal last year at the IAAF World Junior Championships as a member of the USA's 4x400m relay team. At the Detroit Country Day School, she set personal bests of 52.59 in the 400m and 23.42 in the 200m.

"Daniel brings a combination of an extremely high level of motivation and raw talent to the table as a runner," added Maynard. "His attitude and future potential make him a perfect fit to our young and talented middle distance and distance group."

Braheme Days Jr

Track & Field Continues to Add to 2013 Class Director of Track & Field Mike Maynard signs another athlete to NLI

Feb. 7, 2013

Director of track and field Mike Maynard has announced Braheme Days Jr. as another high school student to sign a National Letter-of-Intent to attend UCLA next fall. Days joins Kendall Baisden, Morgan Simon, Daniel De La Torre and Paige Tennison as the first student-athletes, in what is expected to be a strong class, to have signed on to join the Bruins.

Braheme Days Jr. of Bridgetown, NJ, is the no. 1 returning high school shot putter in the nation. He has thrown a nation-leading 70 feet, 8 inches and 69-0 as a high school junior. Maynard was also attracted to his elite discus throwing, as he hold a personal best of 192'.

"Braheme is really a great fit for our program. He's very bright, and a total student of the throwing events," said Coach Maynard. "He seemed like a member of the team from the time he stepped on campus. I believe he adds an immediate and added NCAA scoring potential to an already strong throws squad."

Below are Coach Maynard's comments and brief bios on the other members of this recruiting class:

Kendall Baisden - Detroit Country Day School, Detroit, MI

Kendall won a gold medal last year at the IAAF World Junior Championships as a member of the USA's 4x400m relay team. At the Detroit Country Day School, she set personal bests of 52.59 in the 400m and 23.42 in the 200m.

"I had the opportunity to watch Kendall run in Barcelona last summer at the World Juniors," said Maynard. "She is not only exceptionally talented, but her personal poise and effort level shine through as a competitor. I believe that Kendall will add to the fine legacy of her Bruin predecessors in the 200m and 400m here at UCLA."

Morgan Simon - Loyola High School, Los Angeles, CA

Simon boasts personal bests of 10.53 in the 100m and 21.15 in the 200m while running track at Loyola High School.

"Morgan's addition to the team will bolster both our quality and depth in the sprints," said Maynard. "Coach Bolden and Coach Greene both feel that he will develop into one of the nation's top sprinters, and in the NCAA in future years. We are expecting Morgan to be a key player in continuing our dominance in the 4 x 100m relay."

Daniel De La Torre - La Salle High School, Pasadena, CA

As a junior, De La Torre was one of the top milers and two milers in California and placed fourth in the 3200m and ninth in the mile at the California CIF State Track and Field Championships. In 2012, he was the Division 4 California CIF State Cross Country Champion. De La Torre boasts personal bests of 4:10.74 in the 1600m and 9:05 in the 3200m.

"Daniel brings a combination of an extremely high level of motivation and raw talent to the table as a runner," added Maynard. "His attitude and future potential make him a perfect fit to our young and talented middle distance and distance group."

Paige Tennison - Newport Harbor High School, Newport Beach, CA

One of the top distance runners in California this year, Paige registered a personal best of 10:31.15 in the 3200m. As a Junior, she finished eighth in the 3200m at the California State Track and Field meet. She also placed fourth in Division 2 at the California State Cross Country meet.

"Paige is a great talent and is an exciting addition to our women's distance squad," said Maynard. "I feel that she has a great opportunity to develop as one of the top young distance runners and excel to the highest levels of NCAA competition, and beyond."
