Free Agency

Posted: 3/11/2013 10:21 PM

Free Agency

Wanted to start a thread for all free agency acquisitions and ideas with Free Agency starting tomorrow, especially with a lot of our other threads becoming off topic.

Ill get things started: I think Gosder Cherillus would be a perfect value signing at RT, Keenan Lewis the same at CB and it sounds like were quite interested in in the Raider DT Desmond Bryant

Re: Free Agency

Well......we need about 15 players and have seven draft picks.
Even if we sign 3-4 free agents(doubtful),we will end up with 4-5 undrafted free agents on the 53 man?
I thought the idea was to improve a little every day?
I still don't understand how guys who aren't good enough to get drafted will be better than Smith,Cox,Knighton, and Ross?

It's not that I'm attached to these players.......and I understand the idea is to rid the team of under performers and get younger........but how can be sure undrafted free agents wont underperform also?
I just don't understand where all the needed talent is gong to come from?
And if they are planning on taking at least two years to get better.....why release players who could help us bridge the gap?

Re: Free Agency

I think we sign far more than 3-4 free agents, it's just not gonna particularly be guys you have heard of or that espn talks about all the time.  It will be under the radar guys to help fill out the back end of the roster, it wont all be undrafted free agents.

Fitzpatrick was released today, I could see us looking to bring him in as competition at the qb position, something that Caldwell has been blatant about saying he wants to do

Re: Free Agency

Well this board has been pretty inactive for a while; however, we have made a few moves.  Brought in Allan Ball, Geno Hayes, Justin Forsett, and Roy Miller to this point.  Allan Ball I only know of him what I read, but seems to have had his ups and downs in his nfl career thus far; nonetheless, hes a long rangy corner that fits gus's system well, so hopefully he can thrive in this environment, and I'll take anything at corner right now, b/c before his signing we only had harris and rutland on the roster....obviously still more work to do at cb though.  Geno, I watched a lot in college and he was a beast, but he too has had his ups and downs, but had a successful yr or 2 in TB under Gus's direction.....he too seems to be a good fit for Gus's d being a speedy LB and hopefully he can succeed in this system.  Then there's Roy Miller, whom I think is an awesome signing, as many have said he will not show up on the stat sheet, but he will be a vital piece of the d, as a run stuffing, block swallowing NT, which is needed in Gus's hybrid 4-3, this could be a huge get.  Finally, I really like the Forsett signing, he looked good when he got his chances last yr in Houston and he did alright in Seattle also.  He's a nice chance of pace back that fits well in a zone blocking scheme, and offers return ability.

Nothing incredibly exciting, I know, but some good scheme fits for very cheap, that could offer great value.  Market has developed slowly, so there are plenty of good ballplayers still available at positions of need

Re: Free Agency

They acquired "guys" to replace the other "guys" we released or chose not to re-sign.
It's all just depth to this point.
They are waiting on the draft and hoping to kill it.
I,for one,am skeptical because we NEVER kill it in the draft.

I'm holding out hope that this new group of guys get it right because we need "at least" 3-4 guys out of this draft to be here, and productive, for at least the length of their first contracts.
I still will not agree that there isn't a single free agent "starter" available that would be a good fit with this team where it is right now.
There are some guys available in the 26-28 age range that have to be good enough to start for us.....and more importantly, better than the undrafted guys we are gonna bring in.
They say this has nothing to do with money.....but how can that be?
Guys who aren't good enough to get drafted can't be better than "all" the free agents available.I'm talking higher priced starters here.....not the guys we signed.
I have no problem with Smith,Ball, and Co.,but they aren't being brought in to be cornerstone players for this Org.

Re: Free Agency

It's not an issue of whether or not the free agents are good enough to start for us, there are tons of free agents out there more than good enough to start for us.  The issue is whether the contracts that they command would provide the necessary value to sign them at this point with this current roster.  Our roster is a mess, and a ways away from competing for anything significant, it wouldnt be very wise to hand out contracts to a couple free agents that will make us marginally better over the next few yrs while were rebuilding then be gone by the time the rebuilding process is over and were actually ready to compete.

I think were going to be very pleased with the Roy Miller signing despite the fact that he wont be putting up stats, I think he will be a fine addition.  Many teams were very interested in him.  I also like the Forsett signing.

Also, the market is dead right now with a lot of solid free agents left on the market, I'm sure we have several additions left to make, and they will be at great value b/c we have waited out the market.  Were much better off allowing the Miamis of the world to throw around foolish money early in free agency, then grabbing the high value at the end of free agency....esp in our rebuilding state

Re: Free Agency

Sen'Derrick Marks added for 1 yr.  Should be another nice value signing to add depth at the DT  positions for cheap after cutting Mosely to save a little money.  Not anything spectacular like I know a few people are looking for this offseason, but I feel like its another good value move where the player will earn the money he is being paid

Jaguars sign Mohamed Massaquoi....WR.
Nice addition IMO.
We should have a pretty dood 1-4 at WR next year.
Now....about Quarterback!

Re: Free Agency

Yes another nice value signing that adds solid depth, I like it.  Anybody heard anything about Mike Jenkins?  He visited like a week ago and was supposed to visit the bills and someone else.  Haven't heard anything else since, we could def use him in our starting lineup with what we currently have at CB

Yah being in South Korea right now i'm sure you have more pressing things to worry about. You have not missed much though. New Uniforms are going to be released right before the draft, but other than that we are pretty much waiting for the draft.

Re: Free Agency

Thank you for your service.  As of right now it would seem its between Dion Jordan and Geno Smith.  Hey Jagboy, when they release the new unis on the 23rd, wouldn't you expect all the old gear to be dirt cheap on the jags website?

Yah i always preferred Reebok over Nike though cause their jerseys are more loose. Since they are releasing the jerseys before the draft then the first round pick should be holding up the new jersey. It looks like Pennywise hopes that we draft Geno Smith by its picture. I'm not opposed to drafting Geno, drafting a Qb in the first round gives you lots to look forward to when the season starts. Not that i wouldn't be excited about getting Jordan, its just a DE doesn't spark the high controversy that a Qb does.

Re: Free Agency

I'm pretty cheap, so I'm not too concerned with who makes it as long as its a good value.  I'm with you on Geno, I'm not sold on him as a #2 pick, but this draft is weak, we're in need of a qb and I think Geno is probably a better qb prospect than we realize, we're just all comparing him to the sure thing can't miss prospects of RG3 and Luck

Re: Free Agency

How do you all feel about the fact that we're yet to sign a corner not named Allan Ball?  Seemed like there were several decent value signings that could have been had later in free agency at CB, and we are absolutely bare at the position.  I realize we still have the draft and free agency after the drafts, including players getting cut to get rosters down, but I would feel a lot more comfortable if we could have come up with one other corner by now

We have not done much during Free Agency but that was to be expected.  I was ok letting go of Cox because he was asking way to much especially since he constantly getting injured. I was sad to see Pot Roast go, cause I liked the guy. Good riddance to Ross, who thought he was on a paid vacation. Expect for us to draft a defensive back within the first 3 rounds. Like i said earlier Caldwell hasn't done much this offseason, but he also hasn't done anything wrong or made overpaid signings.

Re: Free Agency

O yea I'm fine with what Caldwell has done in free agency, it would be absolutely foolish to dish out good money for top free agents when we are so far from competing and looking to start completely fresh.  I'm fine with him letting all the guys leave also that left, including Pot Roast....though I also wanted him to do well and become the stud he was capable of, he was downright awful this past season.  I like the signings he has made, I think they are all good low end value signings of guys that fit the unique systems we run, which makes a lot of sense for a team in the position we're in, I especially like the Roy Miller signing.  I just think he could have made one more of these value signings at the CB position, b/c it's going to be hard to fill out that position that is now completely barren with just the draft.  I know he was in pretty deep on Mike Jenkins and Antoine Cason, but was unable to land either one....just worried going into the draft with Allan Ball and Mike Harris as the starters.  I think he can land a starter in the draft, but that will leave us still in need of another starter in my opinion

Thanks for you service!

A lot of smoke around us taking Jordan. I'm still hoping we can trade down.
