2013 Draft Talk

With the second pick in the 2013 NFL Draft the Jacksonville Jaguars select                      ?

In your opinion who do you think the Jaguars should select, and give your reason why.

Re: 2013 Draft Talk

Jarvis Jones.  Hopefully the Chiefs leave him alone.  This guy is a special pass rushing talent and God knows we can use all the pass rushing help available.  Hopefully we switch to a 3-4 and use him at OLB, but we can also use him out of a 4-3 just like Von Miller.  None of the talent in this draft excites me to this point unfortunately, but I think this guy is going to be special

Re: 2013 Draft Talk

Sorry, didn't see this thread when I posted my thoughts in the other about the Draft.

My thoughts:
Maybe....."maybe" the Chiefs pass on Geno Smith and "maybe" he would be worth a shot at #2?
We need so many things.
I think I'd be happier getting a sure thing at ANY position over a "maybe" at QB.
The top OL......or the best DL......or CB?
I don't know......who ever they take, they just better not miss on more than one of the top four picks we make!
We have two of the top 33 picks.......we better get starters with both picks.

Re: 2013 Draft Talk

Joekel the tackle from Texas A&M. Since there isn't a top flight quarterback like last year then start building the line to keep the QB upright. Then later take a QB to develop like Bray from Tennessee or someone like Ryan Aplin from Ark St.

Probably the way to go. Either that, or spend the pick on the DL.  Keep our QB upright or try to knock their QB down.

Another topic that will come up with this draft is if the Jaguars should switch from a 4-3 defense to a 3-4 defense.

Re: 2013 Draft Talk

Right on Jagboy, what is your opinion on defensive scheme?  I really would like to see us switch to a 3-4, it seems far easier to draft for the 3-4 scheme these days.  I posted something in the "Offseason Ideas" thread that breaks down our current roster and how each of the players we currently have would fit into a 3-4, I found it quite helpful to knowing how our current 4-3 players would translate to the 3-4.

And Caldwell has said that he is going to leave it up to the new coach to decide which defensive scheme to run

I think with the players that we could pick in the first round would be better for the 3-4 defense. The two players I like the most right now are Jarvis Jones & Star Lotulelei. I think both of them play in a 3-4 defense. If were planning to run the 3-4 defense we need to bring in a defensive coordinator who knows how to run it, which means goodbye Mel Tucker.

As of right now WalterFootball.com has us picking Jarvis Jones.

jagicon.gifJacksonville Jaguars: Jarvis Jones, DE/OLB, Georgia

Chris Mortensen previously reported that Tim Tebow would be a Jaguar next year. Well, new general manager David Caldwell shot that down, telling the media he couldn't imagine Tebow being on his roster. Caldwell went on to say that he still thinks Blaine Gabbert deserves a chance to prove himself. Yeah, the future looks very bright in Jacksonville.

I'd love to give the Jaguars a quarterback here, but there are none available. Maybe Caldwell will reach because he sounds crazy enough to do that, but he can get a signal-caller atop Round 2. Instead, he might draft the best pass-rusher in the 2013 NFL Draft.

Jarvis Jones would be a huge boost to a defense that has missed strongside linebacker Daryl Smith all year. Smith is a free agent, so if he's not re-signed, Jones would be a worthy replacement. He would function as Von Miller does in Denver, rushing the quarterback in obvious passing situations. Damontre Moore is also a possibility.

Re: 2013 Draft Talk

Jarvis Jones is my preference also, and I believe we have the players to man the end positions in the 3-4 to a certain degree, but we will have to find a true NT somewhere.  Perhaps his massive teammate Jenkins will be available in the 2nd?  I hear he's a pretty impressive true NT, don't know a tremendous amount about him.  Connor Barwin could be a possibility on the free agent market, if we wanted to add 2 pass rushers at the same time, or perhaps we could just try our hand with what we already have at the OLB spot; perhaps give Babin a shot out there, or go with Branch, who seemingly by all accounts fit the 3-4 OLB position better than 4-3 DE coming out of college

Btw, I check that walterfootball site fairly often, that guy can be a real dick though, oftentimes he will be right, but never apologizes or says he was wrong when hes a dick and wrong about something.

Re: 2013 Draft Talk

I think we will be getting players from everywhere.
If we do what is expected, let 60% of our roster leave,
we will be needing to find guys anywhere and everywhere.
There are only so many draft picks.
I would expect a large amount of in drafted free agents in Camp
this year.
You could see guys from Canada plus many free agents.
We are gonna need football players......period.
Hopefully Caldwell finds, and Khan ponies up,for a few proven guys!

I would love to get Jenkins in the second round it would be a great addition to the defense. Both Jones & Jenkins would be one of the best 2 rounds of the draft we have had in a while. Whats Jarvis Jones spinal condition and should we worry about it at all?

Also what if we got Star in the first round, and Olgetree managed to last into the second round and we drafted him in the second round. Do you guys think Star & Ogletree would be two good picks? (I'am doubting that Ogletree would last till the 2nd round)

And lets to forget about Moore from Texas A&M the guys is a beast.

Re: 2013 Draft Talk

Jones' spinal condition worries me a ton.  He seems like the perfect player, other than this issue and I read he has a few issues in the running game as far as getting swallowed up and not being strong enough to fight off the blocks, but I could live with that to get such a dynamic pass rusher.  The spinal issue is quite worrisome though, as I know it limited Marcus McNeil's career to not much more than 5 yrs.  McNeil was dominant when he was able to play, but the same spinal condition ruined his longevity.  The front office would definitely need to do their homework on the issue, but if everything checks out it would be hard to pass on this guy.  Loutouleilei/Ogletree would be a nice 1-2 pick also, especially if Jones' spinal issue scares us away

How was that Georgia d not that good when they had so much talent?  Its baffling

Re: 2013 Draft Talk

One more thing, Jones is my preference right now and is being mocked top 5 by everyone, but lets not forget guys like Daquan Bowers who looked like a can't miss prospect, but plummeted by the time draft day came around b/c of chronic knee issues.  Even Adrian Clayborn to a lesser degree w/ his nerve issues.  Jones' spinal issue could cause his stock to take a hit as the process goes on.  I really hope not, but its so hard to predict this far out

Yes it's very unfortunate but if medical check ups find something wrong with Jones spinal condition his stock will drop very rapidly. Its a sad fact that such a great player will be judged upon old medical issues, but such is the life of football. If Jones doesn't check out should we adress the DT or DE?  Either way I think the first pick in the draft will be a defensive player.

Re: 2013 Draft Talk

If Jones doesn't checkout, then we need to go with next best available player.  Most likely Moore or Joeckel from TAMU or Star.  My preference at this point would be Star, he has drawn comparisons to Haloti Ngata.  I will take a Haloti Ngata any day

I would love to have a Ngata on our D-Line. I just question who we would go for in the second round?

Re: 2013 Draft Talk

I have posed this idea before, but how about Tyler Wilson?  Dude was a top 10 pick in most mocks before that debacle occurred in Arkansas.  I didn't watch any Arkansas football this past season, but two yr's ago I did see a few of their games and remember being tremendously impressed, and even 3 yr's ago Mallet went down in a game I was watching and Wilson was brilliant when he came in
