Re: Gene is gone

And I read we have also already reached out to Tom Gamble and Khan is willing to pay what it takes to acquire a top young talent such as him, as he will be highly demanded.  Also read that the GM search could go pretty quickly

Re: Gene is gone

Dave Caldwell, of the Falcons, appears to be getting a 2nd interview already, which seems to make him the favorite.  It is said that Tom Gamble is still very much in the running, however.

BCC has good info on all the GM search news, and they even of a flight tracker of Shad Khan's personal jet

How much of this has to do with Mularkey?
Maybe Khan wants Mularkey to stay bad enough he'll get a GM who feels the same?

Re: Gene is gone

Hadn't thought about it that way, but it does make some sense.  Let's hope that it has nothing to do with that and Khan is completely concerned with bringing in the best possible GM he can that will make the best possible personnel moves.  I think Khan is smart enough to make this decision off of those premises and realizes Mularkey is not some great catch that we absolutely must keep and must hire a GM that will have him

Bring in Chip Kelly and Tebow.

Chip Kelly is going to Cleveland and you are Gatorchomp 2.0, completely worried about Tebow and not the Jags, this is getting really old really fast

Re: Gene is gone

And this is a thread about our GM vacancy and what we should do about it, as of right now we still have a head coach, though he will likely be gone when the new GM comes in and makes his own decision, he is still here.  As of right now we have interviewed Dave Caldwell of Atlanta twice, Tom Gamble has been interviewed, and Ross from the Giants.  All 3 from my limited knowledge seem like reasonable, legit candidates.  What do you guys think on the GM search?

Re: Gene is gone

The best thing for the JAGUARS  is for Khan to pick up the best GM possible. Someone that can bring in TALENT. Whether he likes Mularkey or not we need players. Even Vince Lombardi would have a terrible season with the team we put on the field this season. Now we have some really good coaches I would not want to lose (wr coach, dl coach for example)   but our major need is great players. Someone like the NY Giants or SF 49ers director of college scouting would be good. If we are  trying to get someone who wants to keep Mularkey but cannot draft well we might as well keep Gene Smith. I do hope whoever we pick would give Mularkey another chance with some more good players but IMO if he doesnt want him but can draft great I'll take that

Re: Gene is gone

Very very well put cool breeze.  I like Mularkey a lot and hope he gets himself another shot, but I find myself hoping the new GM brings in his own guy, as to just completely wipe the slate clean and completely start over.  But, if the new guy likes Mularkey better than any of the other available candidates and thinks he can win with him, that works for me too.  And you are also right on about our wr's coach, sullivan, I would hate to lose him, but things are not looking good beings Khan told the assistant coaches they can go ahead and seek other jobs

RE: Gene is gone

Whoever the GM is, I hope he tries to focus on the oline because lets be honest here. Justin Blackmon and Cecil Shorts aren't going to get the ball if whoever the QB is is on his back and/or running for his life every time he tries to pass the ball. If our oline is at least middle-of-the-pack as far as pass blocking we'll have our first 1000 yard receiver next year since 2005 (seems forever ago).

For the first time in a long time, we have legitimate threats at the WR position. Lets maximize their potential and see just how good they can be

Re: Gene is gone

Yea it feels weird to have legitimate threats on the outside.  Hard to believe that wr actually going to be one of the few bright spots on this roster, wr depth is still a slight issue however

RE: Gene is gone

I believe if Laurent Robinson comes back from his concussions (that's a big if) we'll have a legitimate slot guy (see: his last year in Dallas). I also liked what I saw from Shipley from his overall body of work since getting on the roster. He and Henne seemed to develop a little chemistry as the season wore on. I'm actually excited for what this WR core does next year. Where as last year, we were hoping somebody would emerge from the group as a go-to guy, but we had a lot of new faces (Laurent Robinson and Justin Blackmon) along with some unproven guys that some wanted cut (Cecil Shorts).

Re: Gene is gone

Yea, with Robinson coming back to go with Shorts and Blackmon we will have a nice trio at wr.  Robinson is going to be heavily overpaid for a 3rd wr, but thats an irrelevant sunk cost, so as long as he is producing nicely as a number 3 wr I love that trio going forward.  I do worry about lingering concussion issues with Robinson, however.  And now I even worry about lingering concussion issues for Cecil also

Re: Gene is gone

I'd be OK with Mularkey......or a new guy.
But,just last year Khan agreed that Mularkey was the best Head Coaching candidate,I doubt he's the type that thinks suddenly he has lost all the attributes they liked just a year ago.
Considering the MJD situation, and all the injuries, and Gene Smith giving us so little talent,it's my belief Khan wants Mularkey to get a "real" chance.
Most GM's will want someone else.
Seems pretty coincidental we keep looking to Atl when we need something.
Not saying he isn't just as qualified......just seems coincidental,is all.

Re: Gene is gone

We have our new GM!  Dave Caldwell, Atlanta Falcons Director of Player Personnel, will be the man.  Sources say he chose us over the Jets.  Having limited knowledge on him, everything I read sounds great, just excited to have a new man in place to head up this franchise for hopefully many yrs to come and have Gene Smith replaced.  Exciting time for Jags fans.

Many sources also saying that they expect Mularkey to be out with the hiring of Caldwell and 49ers Offensive Coordinator, Greg Roman, to be his favortie as our next head coach.  We would obviously have to wait until after the 49ers are eliminated from the playoffs to get him, and we would also have to interview more than just him, if for no other reason than just satisfying the Rooney Rule

Nice to hear our guy was so sought after and Shad Khan had the abilities to woo him
