The Dirtiest Player in the NFL 09

Ward, Porter, Haynesworth called NFL's dirtiest

Posted by Michael David Smith on November 3, 2009 2:23 PM ET
A Sports Illustrated poll of NFL players has found that Hines Ward is considered by his colleagues to be the dirtiest player in the league, with Albert Haynesworth and Joey Porter tied for second.

The question, "Who is the dirtiest player in the league?'' was asked of 296 players during training camp this summer, and Ward, the Steelers' wide receiver, got 11.6 percent of the vote, according to Ed Bouchette of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

Times like this make going back and reading past discussions with Ian so worthwhile.  We have gotten into this topic so many times.

I'll take him. I hate the Steelers, but real is real. I'd take Hines Ward in two seconds without thinking.

I think I'd take a handful of other recievers who are "all around" receivers that can block without being a jackass.

I'd take him too! Are his peel backs really that dirty? I just thought he was a really smart blocker with size and technique to really lay a defender out. Honestly, if Mason of Clayton hit like this, we'd all be happy we had BA's like that. But not many receivers can lay our defenders like that, so is because he's a dirty player or because he has major talent?

With that being said, since he plays for our biggest rival, I just want to see him get layed out plain and simple.

Not that this helps to further this discussion or is a mature commentary on the subject or anything of that nature....but this picture just makes me happy since we're on the topic.

Agreed about the picture.

This is like arguing religion.

I don't think Hines is dirty.  I mean.. for a guy being known leaguewide by players and fans for blindside hits on unsuspecting players is more of a cheapshot artist.  Shooting someone in the back of the head without them knowing about it is still a kill, just rather cowardly.  I'm so sure the defensive players are scared of Hines.. more so for hitting guys from the side with a full head of steam.  Its easy to be a tough guy when someone isnt looking.  Hes a hell of a player though.  A stone can trip even the biggest man when he doesnt know its there.

“We wanted to be party crashers,” linebacker Terrell Suggs said. “I hope they enjoyed their little ceremony. I guess we were kind of like the dynamite.”

Well deserved recognition for Hiney.  He's the cheap shot MVP of the league!  But you're right, it's like arguing religion....I'm done.

I agree somewhat.

However, when players are saying this and the NFL is levying fines against a player then there has to be some element of truth in there somewhere.

Totally missed the sarcasm. tongue

Ed Reed slobberknocks an unaware ballcarrier, and you'll cheer for a great play.  Terrell Suggs blindsides a quarterback in the pocket and nearly breaks his back in half, and you'll cheer for a great play.  But if Hines Ward doesn't get a poor little defender's attention before knocking him on his ass, he's a cowardly cheapshot artist?

Got it.

Yup.  Unwarrented cheap shots..  It was so bad Goodell had to call him to NY and read him the riot act and a new rule was put in so his type of chicken sh&t  play was banned..

Re: The Dirtiest Player in the NFL 09

I could see if SI asked the fans "Who is the dirtiest player in the league?" and they came up with this vote, but the fact of the matter they didn't! They asked his peers, the same guys he plays the game with .

Not sure how they came up with 296 players, but thats roughly 9.5 players per team, that thinks he's the dirtiest player today. You would think he would strive to be respected league wide, but now he is know as a punk and a cheap shot artist.

The difference is our guys hit players with the ball.

Re: The Dirtiest Player in the NFL 09

lmao @ Ian trying to rationalize dirty play. Yeah, we're cheering Reed and Suggs for making big plays on the ball. We aren't cheering for them to take cheap shots on players 20 yards away from the ball with no bearing on the play. Only a tool would do that.
