Don't be surprised if.....

Don't be surprised if.....

In the next two weeks, we see a new CB, Safety and or an O'Lineman and RB. This is when Ozzie historically has flourished. I am not speaking the scrap-heap type. But, Veterans that are available or cut.

I definitely can see a RT. I'm not sure I'm ready to hand the keys over to Wagner as a starter.

Re: Dont be surprised if.....

I am much more concerned about our depth at corner than I am our RT.

Wagner can't possibly be any worse than Oher. We can't have 5 all-pro caliber lineman. I believe Wagner will be solid. Not great but not terrible.

Chykie and Asa as our corners really scare me. I can't see Ross and Franks making it very far. I sincerely hope we bring in a corner thats capable of holding it down. This is a passing league and if Webb or Jimmy go down (Heavens Forbid, Please God, Heavens Forbid)....it will be a long season with Chykie and Asa at the helm

I do not understand a statement like that?  I understand Oher was not a pro-bowler, but he was a pretty decent starter (average to above average).  As of right now, I think the RT position has been downgraded last year, but hopefully as the year progresses, that changes.  I have no problem with Wagner starting, but I think we need a tackle or 2 to fill the reserve roles just in case.  When will Jah Reid leave this team? He is awful.

We have healthier Guards from the start this year. Either Jensen or Wagner will provide Tackle depth as well as Osemele if needed.

i dont understand why people treat Oher like a pile of garbage. Guy never missed a game (if he did it was one or two), played wherever asked, and was never a problem. He was a professional.

Oher was serviceable after the snap; it was the penalties that killed us.  Most penalized player in the NFL the past 5 years.

Great, he earned the participation ribbon!

I def see a late pre-season addition coming - not sure if it will be a CB though, unless somebody gets hurt or busted at The Greene Turtle again.

Oher  didn't miss a game. He did everything the team asked him to do, and didn't bitch about it.    But this is the new NFL where the stats geeks rule.
Don't even have to watch the games anymore...

Now,
Back to the topic.  I can see some signings if they have  injuries.
Ozzie signed some guys to add competition to the nickle spot during the OTA's.
IMO this is the prime area for another guy to come in because I think it's still a little weak and could be a spot they may feel the need to beef up if somebody becomes available.

There's a ton of RB's already on the roster.  A signing here could be the result of an unexpected more than 2 game suspension for Rice and /or Pierce comes up lame in camp.

I think they like the safety situation. Elam has moved back up front as the SS. If they can keep Stewart healthy he's a nice addition with some pop  to the back end with Miles pushing hard to win the job.

I think if they were nervous about RT they would have signed a guy like Winston by now.  But the Oline looks solid at this point with maybe the only spot to have some concern would be the back up LT.  UDRFA Jim Hurst is now occupying that spot. The good news is if Monroe gets hurt Wagner can slide back over to his natural LT spot and fill in .

Too bad his reputation never recovered from his first two years, which is when he "earned" the bulk of those penalties. The last 3 years he wasn't even the most penalized lineman on our own team.

Being a good NFL player is more than just playing in every game. You also have to be effective.

I agree, Oher was solid for us but still not worth resigning.

I feel like if they would have just put him at RT and left him there he would have been a better player.

let`s hope that the team`s talent evaluation of wagner and zuttah  is more accurate than their evaluation of gradkowski and Shipley.....

FWIW- I thought Michael's best year was his first. He was relentless, and a mauler, not afraid to mix it up, and playing to the whistle and then some. His game hit a ceiling, then regressed.

Changed it slightly to accurately reflect MY opinion.

HE didn't have the hand skills to play on the outside at an average to above level in the NFL, IMO.
IT's not just stat geeks that could see that he was a HORRIFIC run blocker the past few seasons.
His first year was not only his best, it was his best by quite a margin.  He basically did nothing but regress as a Raven, though his 4th year MAY have been his second best.

So if your idea of an average to above average RT is an atrocious run blocker, that can't handle speed rushers and is PARTICULARLY prone to the inside spin move, all the while being a league worst penalty magnet, then Oher is your guy.
For the rest of us, he is a below average player that will struggle to see the field in TEN despite signing a starter level contract.

They haven't exactly been churning out linemen under Harbaugh

Grubbs I believe was a Billick pick and he's been gone

Except that he was NOT even an average starter. He was a ridiculously poor run blocker and an average at best pass blocker, SO, on balance, a well below average RT.

The penalties aren't my problem. He did get better at that over the years and he DID draw more than his share of defensive penalties.

AND he was obviously durable. The biggest problem was.....................

Read the 1st paragraph again, go watch a ton of tape or go to PFF, your choice. You will come to the same conclusion if you do the film study.

It's a position we can get better at, no doubt

but I will say this, week 1 @ Denver, when Oher got hurt the OL went from BAD to full on disaster
