Landover's team loses their trademark

It looks like this is still going through appeals, but if it holds up, this could cost the team a lot of money.

yeah, he's gonna appeal, which allows the patent to be upheld until after the appeal...
He will likely get them to allow the patent to be upheld until he can have a new name/logo in place for next year... and RGIII's Jersey will be number 1 seller...  along with new hats and all that jazz...  he will make more money from this, not less.

It;'s a trademark not a patent though, right/

Eh, this has happened before & the REDSKINS appealed and won. Rinse, repeat.

Even if the day ever came where the REDSKINS were legally forced to change the name, I'll still be calling them the REDSKINS and wearing REDSKINS stuff. You have to remember who the main players are that are backing this name change .... it's not Native Americans. It's the same white liberal elitists that want all of us driving Priuses to the game, carrying our man purses and eating vegan hot dogs in the stands. It's the neutering of America. And none of you are immune.

Hail to the Redskins!

Re: Landover's team loses their patent

Well, I forget to mention one thing: all merchandise sold through 31 of the NFL teams (with the exception of the Cowboys because for some reason they're allowed to have their own deal) is split evenly among the 31 teams.  So, Snyder would only feel 1/31 of the pain, the Ravens would feel 1/31 of the pain, the Eagles would feel 1/31 of the pain, etc.  What this means is that 30 owners will be screaming and running after Landover to change their name with fire and pitchforks.  Even Jerry Jones would be interested because even though his revenue would not be affected, I doubt that he would want to see the NFL financially weakened.

This only a matter of time b4 the slur is history. Anyone see that crushing ad by real Indians during the nba finals? Makes all the Ken types dressing up in feathers look like fools.

If Snyder were smart he'd change the name today to Native Americans or plain Americans. Eveything else stays the same, he would look good, and he would make a fortune. But Angelos jr not that brite.

They should just change their name to "French Fries" and be done with it.

Re: Landover's team loses their patent

more brilliance from our gov`t....exclusive patent rights gone because the results of some poll deem the nic "offensive"....

so,now anyone can use the name ,make and sell the merchandise ....from here, that just leads to more widespread proliferation of the "racial slur"......that`s real startegery,baby...

I said several months ago in another forum on this blog that Snyder should keep the name and change the mascot to a Swedish hottie with a sunburn.......

I'd say that the most likely name change would be skins or pigskins if it would be allowed.  I'd have to imagine that if the powers in charge make them change their name, they won't allow a name unless it's completely different and doesn't make any reference to the old name.

Right on Kenny!
You just keep telling yourself that.
Other than every major Native American tribe (in
particular the Oneida, the Onondaga, and the Navajo
Nation), Washington College of Law at American
University
, POTUS, 50 US Senators, the United
Church of Christ
, the ELCA, the ACLU, the NAACP,
the Leadership Conference on Civil and Human

. - who are all against you.
And I know that on your side you got Zema Williams
(aka Chief Zee), that crazy African American guy who
keeps showing up in a red, faux "Indian" costume,
complete with feathered war bonnet and tomahawk.
That certainly supports the supposition that "Redskins"
is held 'in the greatest respect and reverence' . . .  doh.gif

I still think that it's pretty funny when Danny gets those prop Native American leaders to show and up parade around during the nationally televised games.  Like that makes up for the majority of Native Americans who are defended by it, the other minorities in this country who want to work towards ending racism once and for all, and the whites who want to do the right thing.

Re: Landover's team loses their patent

Its a waste of our governments time pure and simple.

Another thing to think about. It is a reality that what is politically correct changes with the direction that the wind flows. Lets suppose a member of a minority group started a sports franchise that celebrated the minority of which he is a part of and named it after the politically correct flavor of the day. Lets suppose that the name suggests being from a particular continent because some folks from that continent also have that skin color, though this particular Antarctic-American like many of his brethren had never been to Antartica. Lets further suppose that after he sells his team many years later to a Anglo-saxon American that the term Antarctic-American has run its 20 year course of being PC. Should the new owner change the name due to legal pressure…or would it make more sense if the group formerly known as Antarctic Americans chose not to economically support the team? Rhetorical, yes, but hopefully illustrative of the colossal and futile waste of energy that is chasing the PC flavor of the day

Nobody's been shut down yet or forced to have their name changed.  All that's happened so far is that patents have been taken away.  Should somebody be able to profit from the name of another culture without first receiving the rights? And if you say that there is nobody to acquire the rights from, should they be able to say that nobody else can use that term when they have no legitimate claim to it? I'm sure that we had to acquire the rights for the Ravens from Egdar Allen Poe's estate.

Really? Consider the list of NFL teams and I think that you'll change your argument. As for as the legality of profiting from the logo, my comment wasn't directed at that. More at the futility of trying to change names (some are) all the time to prevent hurting folks' feelings.
