Paying McClain over Ellerbe was like paying Flynn over Rabach

Paying McClain over Ellerbe was like paying Flynn over Rabach

Newsome erred on this one. Yes he has a lot of leeway and yes he has proven that he knows how to assemble teams, but nobody is perfect.

I wonder which coach ok'd this move.

That's fine. Rabach was never anything special, neither is Ellerbe. Sometimes timing is everything.

If Ellerbe is worth 5/35 then your posts are worth $10k each.

No he didnt, it was the coaches that flopped by not giving Ellerbee playing time. Had he been given playing time over McClain, Ozzie wouldve locked him up for 3 years instead of McClain.

Who the hell gives a bench warmer a 3 year extension???? Enlighten me...

I thought Ellerbe was serviceable and def. stepped it up in the playoffs, but I'm GLAD we have McClain at what he's making versus the contract Ellerbe got from Miami.  Ellerbe is better than McClain, but the talent diff. isn't worth the larger amount of money Ellerbe got.

Excellent post. I could never figure out Harbaugh's love affair w/McClain. He flat out sucks and isn't half the player Ellerbe is even when healthy. I'd just as soon have Josh Bynes starting at MLB. Likewise I never understood out Harbaugh's problem w/Ellerbe.  Maybe the guy was a head-case or a locker room problem but he produced on the field, and isn't that what counts?

+1

Ellerbe wasn't worth 5/35 no matter what.  Maybe we extend a deal like McClain got and Ellerbe signs, but then who knows if last year was just a great performance in a contract year that we DON'T get if we extend early?

One thing about Ozzie's free agency strategy - he lets guys hit free agency, which might cause us to get increased production out of each guy in a contract year.

Ozzie played it right.  And recent history says Kruger, Ellerbe, and Williams will disapoint compared to the deals they signed.

And, if they gave Ellerbe the big contract over McClain last year, Ellerbe probably wouldn't have had the same "contract" year that he had and maybe we don't make the playoffs.  Ellerbe didn't come to play until he saw the big payday in front of him.  Now that he is paid, does he put the same effort in?  Time will tell.

It's a moot point, now, is it not?

Is the point of this thread to highlight that Ozzie sometimes makes mistakes?

Is there anyone here who doesn't?

Cool Story Bro.

Waxing nostalgic about Rabach? His claim to fame was committing many holding penalties for the Skins.

If anyone tells you they thought Ellerbe was better than McClain a year ago, they're lying. He had a very rough 2011.

Probably the same type of person who thinks Casey Rabach was a player worth remembering.

...and it's not like he was an All-Pro this year.  Solid, to be sure, but unremarkable.

Ozzie didn't make the mistake the Dolphins did in the amount of money they threw at Ellerbe. I wanted him to stay as much as anyone, but lets face it, Miami overpaid.

Lets not overlook what Oz and Steve said the week after the Super Bowl. They was not going to screw up the cap by restructuring contracts to keep players or fit players in.

He's also sticking to his usual  FA game plan of not overpaying.  Right player, Right price.  The Ravens have 12 draft picks to stock pile players. Ozzies is looking to get younger and faster on the back end of the D.They're clearing cap space, they've picked up some veterans to solidify the Dline. They could still pick up a new LT cheap for the long haul. They're going to go after LBs and Safety early in the draft.

The off season game plan is starting to come into focus.  Defense is the priority.

I dont happen to think that letting Ellerbe go was a mistake, I just dont understand people fascination with the obvious.

People make mistakes....well, duh.

They are both B-Grade 3-4 ILB.

McClain was had much cheaper, and was playing okay before his injury.

Ellerbe was a huge ??? and only recently shined.

I think we made the right move, sacrificing some talent for a ton of extra cap room .
