Ed Reed no longer suspended (merged) update

" @AdamSchefter: Ted Cottrell reduced Ed Reed's one-game suspension to only a $50,000 fine. Wow..."

This time I'm not so sure. SD isn't showing they can do much this year. And if our secondary can perform like they did last night, they can do the same next week.

@AdamSchefter: NFL said Ed Reed's hit on Emmanuel Sanders was his third violation in past three seasons. Hit Deion Branch in September, Drew Brees in 2010.

Yes and no. For example, Rivers hits that pass to that wierd #18 guy at the end of last night's game. Or at least doesn't underthrow it by 25 yards.

No, the appeal needs to be filed within 3 days.  If he does that, the appeal gets heard by the end of the week.  If it's overturned (it won't be), he plays, if it's not, he doesn't and serves the suspension.

FIGHT FIGHT FIGHT!!!!!

Sit at home an relax those bones Ed, 3000 miles from SD. I'd trade a loss to SD anyday, if it guarantees another Steeler loss and Raven Win at M&T.

The other player lowered his head, and was leading with his helmet so that there was no other place Ed could hit him, but at the time I figured Ed would get fined but a suspension is bsflag.gif

Don't argue with an idiot;  people watching may not be able to tell the difference.

I just don't understand how they expect defenders to tackle these days.  Ed didn't lead with the crown of his helmet.

How can you tackle someone with your head on the opposite side of the collision?

It's just getting ridiculous on what they are calling.

Sanders lowered his head, fing BS. Reed is not Clark, Mundy or Harrison.

It's funny if you think of the unintended consequences of these rules. You're giving these offensive players an incentive to draw roughness penalties by promising that they'll draw 15 yard penalties, and see their rivals miss games. So, consequently, more players lower than helmet and leave themselves open to injury.  Maybe give the player who gets hit a small fine as well if you suspend the other player.

Re: Ed Reed suspended (merged)

What about the defenseless defender rule.  If a receiver lowers his helmet to lead into a tackle, said receiver should receive the penalty. Reed was on the ground while sanders was standing upright thumping his chest in triumph. Obvious who initiated it.

This aggression shall not stand.
Appeal this in front of a coalition of owners and players along with the Commish.

I guess the only positive is that Ed gets to rest his body, but Sd will undoubtedly tee off against our secondary

I saw the SD game yesterday, their OLine is HORRIBLE.  I saw part of the previous week's game too and it's not an anomaly, they suck.  Rivers twice screamed at his O when he got sacked, lots of missed assignments, guys were coming in unblocked. He was hurried, forced out to the pocket and harassed all night long.  He's been in a foxhole most of the season, the guy looks gun shy.

Ryan Matthews has been a big disappointment this year, again because of his line.  If the Ravens control the line of scrimmage against these guys, I like their chances.  Pees needs to dial in the Safety blitzes like Denver.  Rivers isn't very mobile and he's starting to look old.

I don't understand how it's even a flag when the offense ducks their head.  This wasn't the typical Ryan Clark leading with his helmet.  It's lame but oh well.  Next man up.  I like our team regardless.

The hit on Branch was no different than the hit a NE DB placed on Pitta in the AFCCG, which of course was a non-call. Complete crock of crap.

Im not counting on the offense to step up much, but i know we can count on Tucker & Jacoby on ST, and i think the defense, more notably the secondary, is improving. If we get one TD on offense and no turnovers i'll be happy. If our defense can limit the big plays without Ed, i'll be happy. We need to start blitzing bernard more while Sizzle isnt completely healthy yet

Exactly, the point of having Ed in the backfield is to allow the team to blitz.  We might actually have to dial the blitzes back a bit.

RE: Ed Reed suspended (merged)

What's amazing to me is that none of Ed Reed's hits were with malicious intent nor were any of the players he hit were concussed. A different scenario with James Harrison. He ran his mouth that he had intent to hurt people and that's what happened last year against Cleveland on a Thursday night game and he was eventually suspended for the Monday Night game against the 49ers. That was when Candlestick had not one but two power outages. I hope Ed Reed wins his appeal.

I never thought I would come to a Ravens message board and offer support, but this sucks.  Reed is a great player and plays the game as it should be played.  As much as the Steelers and Ravens dislike each other, Reed has never taken a cheap shot in any of our games.

This doesn't even come close to passing any sort of common sense test.  I'm hoping Reed wins an appeal and doesn't miss any time.

The lowering of the head is a human protective response in a situation of any type of collision.  It's not something learned, it's instinctual for protection.  One braces for impact, so to speak.

Both players' heads tipped into this protective posture.  If the NFL can't see THAT and understand that it's nature AND part of the game when these incidental contacts occur, the game itself is doomed.

My question is, what would the NFL have had Ed do?  Whiff?  Pull up?

Ludicrous, but serve it now.

This is 100% Goodell holding a grudge/vendetta against Reed for the injury report "scandal" a bit ago. It's unreal how much of a petty **** the man is.

Re: Ed Reed suspended (merged)

This is what happenes when you put a drunk (Goodell) in a position he is severely underqualified for. Clearly the NFL is scared of all the liability issues regarding the concussions. This idiot, has no set rules, and tries to be Judge and Jury, while alienating the NFLPA, which is the freaking product that makes the NFL the most profitable sport.

Whether it's Bounties, Player Discipline, or off-field issues the leauge especially the Commissioner need a bipartisin group of ex-players, and league officials to have set rules and standards that exisit in most billion dollar enterprises in America.

Re: Ed Reed suspended (merged)

I like how every replay of Ed Reed that they show on ESPN clearly shows him leading with his shoulders, and the helmet hitting anything is only due to the fact that we aren't giraffes or ostriches where we can have our heads 4 feet from our shoulders.  It's stupid.  The few times he does hit someone with his forearms, it's 100% because he doesn't want to hit them with anything near his head, I'm pretty sure.  Then it's still a penalty.  I can't deal with this lame version of football anymore.  It really sucks.

I agree, that what it all boils down to is a commissioner who started something he can't handle.  He came on board when all ex-players wanted stubstantially better medical benefits after the fact.  No owners want to give up that huge chunk of change, though.  What do they do?  They decide to completely revise the game so that concussions are under the microscope, even a slap to the helmet is a penalty and that if you play defense like someone already revered in football history (because they hit HARD), you are shunned and fed to the media thereafter.  The reason?  They are doing what they can to not have the same kinds of later health problems for football players because they do not want to give up that money to provide for their healthcare.  That's it...bottom line...still about money.  In a lot of ways, Goodell is just a puppet, much like our President is just a puppet (for the people with money and the real power)...and all we can hope is that one day, said puppets will step up, be a man and at the obvious risk of losing their job tell the golden rulers to shove it because people deserve better.

Okay...rant over...haha.

currently out with a groin pull, didnot practice at al last week, or play.

I guess the groin muscle is connected to the back muscle..

99% percent of his first game back from the back injury was as good a game as I have seen from ANY LT in a few years.  The other time i have seen him play this year he was pretty meh bordering on pretty dang bad.  Dude's career looks to be one that will be lost to a dodgy back.

I challenge anyone to watch the hit on Branch, and tell me how Ed could have avoided helmet to helmet contact.  Branch drops his legs out from under him as he catches the ball.  Reed could have gotten an entire foot lower and still hit helmets.  No human has reactions fast enough to avoid illegal contact when the offensive player is lowering like this.

The rule is BS, the suspension is BS, and Godell is trying his best to make the game BS.  Makes me wanna barf.
