Texans FB Vonta Leach was arrested earlier this week in Lumberton, North Carolina and charged with a misdemeanor simple assault.
He allegedly hit another man in the face with a beer bottle and kicked him during a fight. Leach claims, however, that he was accosted and simply defended himself. He was jailed in Robeson County and released on a "written promise." His court date is scheduled for August 18.

LUMBERTON — Vonta Leach, a Rowland native who is an NFL football player, was arrested this week and charged with simple assault. The alleged incident occurred in a downtown Lumberton restaurant last month.

The charge is a misdemeanor. Leach was taken to the Robeson County jail and released on a written promise. He is scheduled to appear in court on Aug. 18.

Leach, when contacted on Thursday by phone, said he could not comment.

A police report said that Leach, 27, of the 5000 block of White Oak Drive, was involved in a fight with Reggie Allen Locklear, 28, of East Seventh Street, at Blackwater Grille at 111 W. Third St., on June 28. That night Leach was holding an all-white dress event at the bar and restaurant.

According to the report, two women began fighting inside the restaurant at about 2 a.m. When Leach attempted to usher the women out of the business, Locklear said he asked Leach "who he was talking to" and Leach hit him in the face with a beer bottle and kicked him.

According to Leach's account, he told the women to leave and Locklear assaulted him and he defended himself.

The alleged fight was one of several that were reported at the Blackwater Grille that night and included a brawl that took place outside of the restaurant after closing.

Leach is a graduate of South Robeson High School. He received a scholarship from East Carolina University and signed a free-agent contract with the Green Bay Packers in 2004.

After a stint with the New Orleans Saints in 2006, Leach found a home with the Houston Texans as their starting fullback. On March 19, 2008, Leach signed a four-year, $8 million contract with the Texans. Leach was named a Pro Bowl alternate for the 2008 season.

Each Christmas, Leach hosts the "Shop With A Jock Christmas Drive" during which he provides $100 gift certificates to Walmart for 40 to 50 needy children.

Leach is known for his charity work and met President George W. Bush on Nov. 30, 2008, when he received the President's Volunteer Service Award.

Very interesting. Would not have expected this and now the question is: How will Kubiak and the front office handle this? How will the NFL (Roger Goodall and his seemingly zero tolerance policy for this type of behavior) react? Boomer Grigsby appears to be a competent fullback and should be a capable fill-in however this plays out.

What? Out of character to defend himself? How about allowing the man due process?

How about actually reading what I wrote instead of reading into what I what I wrote.

I didn't say he was guilty.
I hope he isn't.
You very rarely (only a couple of times) hear about Texans players involved in anything remotely negative off the field.
I would say bashing a dude in the grill at 2 am is just slightly out of character for the normally straight laced Vonta Leach.
Maybe it's just me.....

BTW, welcome to the board.
Judging from the first post, it's gonna be just wonderful having you.....

Re: Vonta Leach arrested

I know Red didn't mean anything other than what he wrote. I've read all his posts for the past 5 months including those involving the Ryan Moats incident. It's out of character for any Texans player to be involved in police. Contrast this with, say, the Cincinatti Bengals or the Dallas Cowboys several seasons ago. There's no question of guilt or innocence and I read nothing implying such.

I wouldn't say it's out of character to defend himself and indeed if such shows to be the case, this warrants his acts. My post above certainly doesn't assume facts not in evidence but rather Goodall's actions for suspending players regardless of legal guilt or innocence.
