HUGE Gap with Houston

“Huge” gap exists between Chiefs, Justin Houston

Posted by Mike Florio on August 5, 2014, 4:28 PM EDT
Houston AP

Linebacker Justin Houston was sufficiently upset with the lack of a new contract to skip the offseason program.  But he showed up for training camp, realizing that the best way to get paid is to complete the final year of his rookie deal.

The Chiefs rewarded Houston for honoring his current obligations by offering a new contract.  Houston didn’t like it.  Per a league source, a “huge” gap current exists between the team’s offer and Houston’s demands.

It’s unclear whether that gap will be closed before the season ends and the Chiefs have to decide whether to use the franchise tag.  If they don’t work out new deals with Houston and Alex Smith, they’ll have to choose between them.  Maybe the Chiefs will choose neither.

The team’s ultimate position on Houston will depend on the development of rookie Dee Ford.  Currently, Ford is listed as the second-string right outside linebacker, behind Tamba Hali.

give me a break, just more negativity from the media on the Chiefs.  Oh so NOW Alex Smith is an elite QB? Now that KC may not re-sign Alex Smith the media wants to act like he's a top 10 guy?  They spent all of last year ridiculing the guy.

The Houston contract will get done as will Smith's IF they deserve it.  What if Houston gets hurt again or Alex Smith flops this year?

Reid and Dorsey are waaaaaaaaaaaay smarter than any of us and will pay these 2 IF they earn it.

ChiefsInsider, can you even confirm that an offer has been made to Houston and that he turned it down?

So far I've been given no reason to doubt Dorsey.  He has re-signed the guys that I thought should be re-signed(I was always an Albert defender, but his agent played hardball with us), brought in guys off the trash heap that became contributors, and he and Reid got us back to the playoffs after one season.

Now he's got a major hurdle in the Houston, Smith, and even Berry contracts.  I can't see an easy way to keep everyone happy while staying under the cap, but he makes the big bucks.

justin must be resigned. i would argue he is the best in the league.if he is asking to be the highest paid at his position i would be fine with it. there is a range for all positions and justin i support paying the top of his range

Given age and ceiling, I think Houston is much more important to the Chiefs future than Smith. I believe Houston to have the ability to be in Canton one day, and given the choice between paying Smith or Houston, I'm paying Houston every time.

signing smith still doesn't get you a top rated qb. we had such crap at qb people are kinda willing to accept less. we have some elite players on def. poe, berry,dj,tamba, houston. all of them come before smith in my book. elite players at any position( aside from kickers and punters ) come before smith. elite players are just to hard to come by

Maybe top rated wasnt the right thing, he is well above average and most importantly, he is a winner. I would like to see him signed as well but I would give Houston a higher priority at this stage in both of their careers.

Re: HUGE gap with Houston

They're talking, that's good. Houston will become the highest paid OLB in the NFL, and he's not going to settle for less than that, nor should he. The Chiefs need to reconcile themselves to that, and then go about creative ways to move around the $$$ to make it happen. Since his base can't be increased this year, they are talking about how to best structure it for future years.

He deserves the money. He is the best pass rusher there is right now. When healthy he is a top 10 player in the league

Re: HUGE gap with Houston

the best thing about justin is that he can do it all. he is great at rushing the passer. but he is also great dropping back in coverage. anything you ask of him he can do and do well. unlike tamba for example who really great at pass rushing but the rest he isn't that great. justin is the whole package and that is not easy to come by

Re: HUGE gap with Houston

Poe and Houston are the two guys right now I feel the best about committing real long term money too...Houston in the next 4-6 months and then focus on Poe...That said Dorsey is not going to give money away and Houston while good has not yet proven himself statistically elite like a handful of other pass rushers he certainly wants to be paid like. Let him play 2014 without a new contract and he picks up 14-15 sacks, all bets are off.

I think I remember reading or seeing someone post on here that he graded out as the highest rated OLB last year.  I don't pay PFF for the ratings, but if he wasn't #1 he was close

Re: HUGE gap with Houston

If the numbers are correct we have about 5.5 million in cap space this year, there's no way Dorsey lets that goes to waste. With the injuries in the TC I think he's waiting to shape up the roster before signing Houston to an extension. Not sure if the cap savings from this year can be rolled over to the next or are there any exceptions but Houston's contract will hurt us less if we can get the most hit out of it soon.
