5 Days to Camp: Derrick Johnson's Impact in 2014

5 DAYS TO CAMP: DERRICK JOHNSON

In the history of the Kansas City Chiefs franchise, I can’t think of one player that personifies consistency more than Linebacker, Derrick Johnson. Entering his 10th NFL season the standout defender doesn’t appear to be ready to hang up his cleats anytime soon.

Good read. DJ was inconsistent in his early years but man I wouldn't trade him for any ILB. I love watching shoot and dive through the gaps to make plays in the back field.

DJ has been excellent since Haley got him to take it seriously. But It was alarming how poorly he played in the playoff game last year, and I fear he has a year, maybe 2 left of quality play. Dorsey has been really good about drafting early to replace a star player who might be here now playing well, but won't be in a year or 2, so I think it's paramount that in next years draft, priority 1 is drafting DJ's eventual replacement, even if DJ is still playing at a high level next year.

I think getting 2 ILB, either via FA, waiver or draft needs to get done. Grab a young guy to groom behind Johnson, but I still would like to get another next to him that can solidly contribute now too.
This got me thinking. Where are we at the positions really and age wise?
ILB we need to get young
OLB we did get Ford and have Houston, but still depth would be good.
DL- We need to find the guy to replace Devito but we are young with Cat and Bailey only if they work out.
CB- Gaines, Cooper still could use another youngster for Smith.
S- Adbullah, Berry and Commings, I think that is solid
OL- We are very young and can grab depth developmental guys as we go too.
WR- Need some help here. Our best is Bowe who is older now.
TE- Kelce/Harris we will see on. Maybe another guy down the road depending on how these two do this year?
QB- Have Murray and Bray back there behind Smith who still has 3-6 years left easily.
RB- JC, Davis and ? Need to get another good developing RB in a couple years.

Overall though, we are not to shabby and if we can get upgrades, draft accordingly I think we stay pretty good for awhile. Nice to see this instead of all the old vets we had with Vermeil that once they retired, we had nothing behind them at all. Man, did he draft poorly.
