In Ruskell We Trust?, Ctd
Some of the e-mail responses to last week's article, and the talk on the sports radio since the Seahawks placed Walter Jones on IR, here's a follow-up piece to last week's article.

More please!
Let's now look at Ruskell's trades, trades of draft picks and handling of the draft picks. It can fairly be argued that he has not been very successful with 1st rd. picks, has lost pick value with pick trades, unsuccessful trading picks for players, and has been quite unsuccessful with late rd. draft picks. This last draft was his best but one wonders how much better it might have been if he'd stayed pat and just picked with the Seahawks early draft pick available to him in each round except the 5th rd.
All in all a reasoned critical assessment of his performance over 5 offseasons raises a great number of concerns.

They have done quite a bit to back up the OL. However, I question their capabilities and judgement concerning their picks. They are either injury prone or not a very good fit or they like the idea of hybrids while not commiting to a necessary position. So far they have a poor record in rebuilding and backing up the OL.

Great write up Mac! Makes you wonder what Paul Allen is thinking... If the Hawks repeat what they did last year, will Paul replace him? I hope so! If we dont win the division, I still hope so.

There is no excuse for not addressing left tackle... especially the part about walter not being able to take anti inflamitory drugs.... Guys have a hard time coming back from that surgery in any case... Lock coming off of surgery as well.. I just Really don't understand what Ruskell was thinking.... well actually I believe he was thinking Defense... I guess maybe when a team has a tackle like Jones they forget he is human... Nice read Mac! LTH

As an avid student of the game, this is quite possibly the best, most complete series I have read all year. It answers just about every question over team woes, including insights into why the once candescent VMAC is now a virtual graveyard.

Re: In Ruskell We Trust?, Ctd
Great article. I've been pushing for an OT for three years. I do admit, I'm happy with Curry, but we haven't been efficient with our FA money and draft picks, it has really set us back. GMs have these "systems" they fall in love with and end up boxing teams in with while the league evolves. Personally I like Ruskell, but he hasn't got the job done. When he signed Jones and Duckett, and let all those great RBs go in the 2008 draft, I knew he had a philosoply that I didn't understand. When he passed on signing any veteran OT during training camp to cover for Jones being out, I knew he had to be protecting a player or himself instead of the team. I bet he loathes even thinking of using a early pick on a QB or OT next year, he's not good at it. Ruskell seems to go with what he knows...he hasn't really evolved.

Superb work Mac, this piece as well as the first of the series. You're comparison of the attention and money spent on OT vs. our other emergency need situations really confirms what many of us have been thinking for a few years now.
You did it clearly and succinctly, responding directly to the questions folks had about the first installment. Bravo.
