The run game

The run game

So what is it going to take for us to get the run game going? Another game where Manning throws for over 300 (mostly because we had to throw 40-to 50 times to be effective) and the ground attack just couldn't pick up any consistency. We seem to run fairly well to the outside, but our interior blocking has really been a weakness.

Re: The run game

Not really sure...for one Pollack needs to sit on the bench. DeVan looks like a much better run blocker.

Just seems like our blocking breaks down so fast that our backs dont have a chance at anything more than a 2 yard gain if that. To add to that, our running plays look like they develop soooo sloowwwww.

When the 9ers are off the line of scrimmage standing up, i would have run it right up the gut at them. Snap the ball before the 10 second mark on the play clock and let our oline get a running start into some LBers.

Side not, i think Addai did one hell of a job blocking today.

Pollak got beat for two of today's sacks, too. Horrible game for him. If Ugoh is healthy again go ahead and try him in there, or just settle on DeVan. One thing seems to be clear. The Colts shouldn't bother drafting O linemen in the early rounds anymore.

Re: The run game

If we need to, i would seriously think about just trading for some proven linemen. Its the one major weakness now and its going to cost us severely. I know its too late to trade now, but i wouldnt hate it if we did it next year.

We cannot keep plugging guys in that are incapable. Pollack bugs the crap out of me.

Re: The run game

Pollack and Lilja both are horrible. Saturday is not a good run blocker, but he's a great leader, has consistency with Manning, is a great pass blocker, keeps the rest of the line poised during all of Manning's histrionics and makes the line calls very well.

So all those things combined make up for being an average run blocker.

but we can't afford for the two guards to be as terrible as they are, because it ends up where one of the three of them just get beat clean on every run play.

There were a few plays where the 49ers just shoved Pollak to the ground. Runs and passes. Shoot, at least stay on your feet. At least make them step around you.

Re: The run game

If ever there was a game where a team dared you to beat them running the ball right at them this was the game, Sadly, It couldn't be done. I am thrilled with 7-0, I'm very happy with the defensive effort, I just really fear that unless things improve from here on out that the running game is again going to end up being the achilles heel for this team in the post season. 6 in the box, D-lineman standing around and not bothering with getting into a 3 pt stance and it could not be exploited, Very Sad IMO.

and other times that someone just got rigt by him without him laying a hand on him.

I mean, how does an interior lineman just get right by you? How can you not even touch him?

Having Donald Brown would have helped today. Hes a great change of pace. Addais dancing and juking and then Browns straight line running. Would have been nice to have...

I wish you guys would stop blaming Addai for the rushing problems. Brown managed to break a couple runs to the outside, it doesnt mean he's the answer. Our interior line just stinks, pure and simple. We need to improve there and the roster of
RBs will be fine.

Uh im not blaming addai at all. Ive always backed Addai even in those heated threads where people wanted to start freaking Rhodes.

I love Addai. Was just saying, were much more effective with the 2 of them instead of just the one.

I bet im one of the bigger Addai fans on this board thats for sure.

Sorry, I'm overly sensitive to it.

No beef with you.  Mostly just upset with those that think the problems in the run game are due to the RBs and not the o line. Today was a perfect example of why its the O line.

But Addai is a big part of the problem.  He's having a worst year average wise then he did last year. Brown is averaging over a yard and half more per attempt. Brown is capable of making the big play everytime he touches it. Last week Brown had more yards in 2 carries then Joe did through his first 15.  I'm not saying the line play is great, but there is a reason why we took another RB with our first pick this year and it's not because Polian is thrilled with how Joe runs. I just don't think it's a coincidence that the first game Brown misses we end up having to completely abandon the run and look like 2008 all over again.

Re: The run game

Brown has a few large chunks that gives him that average. I seriously think we need BOTH getting carries.

What? Have you been watching? When have we NOT been forced to abandon the run completely this year?

I tire of arguing with people that only watch the box score instead of the games. No one could run behind that line.

Donald Brown is averaging 4.6 YPC. He had more yards in 2 carries just last week then Joe did in his first 15. Is the line only blocking then when Brown is in the game?

Re: The run game

LOL again. How the hell can you base something like that off ONE huge run for a big gain then ONE more run for 3 freaking yards?

The line sucks. Quit trying to act as if Addai needs to be stocking shelves. The evidence is on the freaking TV. You dont need to be a rocket scientist to say "HEY LOOK, THE BAD GUYS ARE ALREADY HITTING THE GOOD GUY BEFORE HE GETS TO MOVE".

Re: The run game

Its two carries, there was a time last year when Rhodes had better stats than Addai, but by the end of the year their stats were identical.

Brown was 11 for 33 in game 1.

14 for 40 in game 3

9 for 33 in game 4

6 for 22 in game 5.

So you're really taking the one run last week and determining that the line is blocking fine, and the problem is Addai.

NO ONE is running well behind this line. Period.

Prior to the Rams game, he had 42 carries for 154 yards and a 3.5 YPC average.

Thats right in line with Joe's stats.

What are you talking about? His 2nd run was for 13 yards on a play where Addai would have been lucky to get 2.

Since when were huge runs a bad thing? Do big runs not count any more? Do they take away big plays now? Maybe if Addai ever made a big play his numbers would be a little better then the current 3.3 he currently has?

Quit acting like Addai hasn't sucked since the middle of 07. There is a reason why  Polian spent another number 1 pick on a RB.  Kravitz and Phil Wilson of the star were just talking last week about how Polian was up in the box at St. Louis fuming for Addai to "turn it up". This comes after Bill called him out after the playoff loss last year for not hitting the hole that was perfectly blocked.  His days are numbered.
