Can this team legitimately contend this season?

This is my first post in a very long time, glad to be back and am ready for the season. I see there has been many positive changes on this site. Bar none the best Cowboy Forum period!

Simple question, can the Cowboys legitimately contend for the Super Bowl this season?

Yes, but many things need to go right, which makes it unlikely to happen. That is my non-homer honest opinion. Does that mean this season is over before it started, especially for Cowboy Nation's mindset of Super Bowl or bust mentality? Not at all, ending the playoff drought should be this year's goal, anything else is gravy in my opinion.

The team must rely heavily on their offense, hold up on special teams and become an opportunistic defense that creates many turnovers to be successful. Bring out the old 2007 blueprint, score a lot of points, play ahead of the scoreboard and close out each opponent on the ground. Difficult but possible.

The NFC East is winnable, it is time to end the playoff drought!

Re: Can this team legitimately contend this season?

offensively, they will be as good as any team in the league IMO

defensively is a whole different story. I will say, watching the preseason games, every team will struggle on defense with these BS ticky tack calls the refs are making

any given sunday I guess noidea

I believe we have just as much as a chance as everyone, to win the NFL East. If we do, after that, it is up to the seeding and who's hot, and who is not, to see how far we could go.

It is an offensive league and is geared that way by the NFL. It gives this team a chance to compete. Old days no chance at all. The Falcons almost beat both the Seahawks/49ers two years ago with a real suspect defense and a real explosive offense.

The new rules make every team weaker on defense. The NFL wants high scoring games and we have one of the top offenses in football. Teams who relied on thier defense and had a so so offense are in trouble

Re: Can this team legitimately contend this season?

This team is so loaded on offense, we can hang with anyone..we just need the D to step up a couple times a game..remember last year we lost 3 games by like a total of 5 pts, with the worst  D in history..Personally I think the D will be actually better despite who we lost. People dont remember how good the D was last year in the beginning BEFORE all the injuries!!! I believe we were leading the NFL in takeaways...So unlike most on here and in the media, I dont feel were that far away. Especially if we get a few wild cards like Melton, Mcclain, and MO to return healthy.

New year...skies the limit...Ultimate underdogs= CHAMPIONSHIP!!

I agree with all of this. Our offense will be able to put up points through the air and grind out games on the ground. Our defense will have to make forcing turnovers their specialty. If they can give our offense more opportunities, then it won't matter if they're giving up a lot of yards. If we're lucky in that regard then we could go 11-5 beating teams like 42-38.

Think of the 2009 Saints. Their #1 scoring offense that year benefited greatly from a defense who forced a lot of turnovers, but was otherwise pretty average.

I doubt ANY of those three are healthy this year.  It is, after all, the Cowboys.

You can't make the playoffs this year with a defense this bad, imo. The 2012 Saints, for example, ranked 2nd in offense and 32nd in defense, and they could not crack .500, finishing 7-9.
Still a Cowboys fan despite Jerry Jones and the longest Super Bowl drought in franchise history

Re: Can this team legitimately contend this season?

For me, I guess it depends on what mean mean by "contend".

Do you mean contend for a division title or a Super Bowl? Because I easily think the Cowboys can contend for a division title if they can just get lucky with health (might be asking a lot) and wind up somewhere in the low 20's on defensive ranking. I see no reason why they can't match up with these other teams in the division if that's the case, and wind up with a playoff birth.

If you're talking Super Bowl, there's no way. While I think we can make the playoffs if we're playing at the absolute best of our abilities, I think we're dead in the water once we reach them. I don't think we have the talent yet on the defensive side of the ball to compete the with the more complete teams that you will see in the playoffs.

So your answer is yes and no. As in season's past, I think this team will be both fun and heartbreaking to watch at the same time.

we've been hopefull to end the playoff drought for some time, just as we have been hoping to finally have a good December month to roll wih momentum into the playoffs as well as win the NFC East division. Oppsing teams in NFC East will have their troubles but will we fold against our usual rivals ?

Skins always play us tough - Giants games are always a battle , even when they are struggling. i really have my questions with Iggles without Desean Jackson - but we have our own struggles on defense, we have games that we should have nailed ( see the Green Bay game)
and we fall apart in December. we talk about the big offense but that offense could be playing catch up and abandoning the run because of the defensive deficiencies.

You like many of the fan base, need to see it to believe it. Win a meaningful game late in the season. They just need to break through somehow, someway!

you like too many do not think enough.  Look at the very top teams like Seattle.  Only a true idiot thinks we can stand and go toe to toe with a team like that.  There are about 3 or 4 teams that will eat our lunch and they are the ones that will be standing come the playoffs.

Sure we can contend in a division that stinks like this one does.

What do you think we would do in the NFC west?

We would have the fight of our lives to finish higher then 4th.

Rules are fine as long as they are enforced fairly and equally. I'm not trying to say there is a conspiracy theory against the Cowboys, but we seem to be on the short end of the stick when it comes to penalties NOT called for us. I remember last year when we played the Lions we got called for a PI and after getting the ball back an identical play happened against our WR and was not called. Cris Collinsworth, of all people, even questioned why it was called against us and not them. I hate to say it but these "new rules" are going to cost us some games this year.....
