Re: *****RICE POST-GAME THREAD*****

Well, they covered the spread. The only other time they've done that in a season opener in the Brian Kelly era was in 2012.

They don't score 50 and golson didn't get 500 yards.

Fire Kelly and cut Golson!

Great win by the boys today! Excited for the season!

Anyone catch the michigan game? I only saw the final score, think our D is up to the task based off today?

Re: blow out

I piked a lot of what I saw. Outside of the busted coverage. I think the D did a good job. JS is a good player. Brings the stick. The offense showed great potential. Awwww lawd. But overall. Somethings to improve upon. But a good showing.

Oh.. is it just me. Or did it seem like both the O and the D didn't seem to show much of anything. EG couod be special. He looks sooooo much more comfortable in the pocket.

Re: *****RICE POST-GAME THREAD*****

I agree, it was a great win and a nice way to start the season.

Like you said, there are things that the team needs to improve on but there were a lot of positives after watching the game.

1. QB play, both starter and backup. It was very awesome to watch.

2. Offense. Good balance between running and passing. Both are potentially lethal.

3. Defense did a good job setting the tone early in the game. Closed well.

4. Let's not forget the special teams. From the punt returning, kickoff coverage, consistent place kicking, and even that punt play fake stoppage. Overall very nice.

Things to improve on are:

I don't know if it was just one play, but there were some dropped passes and questionable route running sometimes. But overall they were very good. I am just being picky and trying to point out a flaw.

Busted coverage for the defense at times. We seemed to get gashed sometimes if blitz/pressure doesn't get there. Not just the TDs but also all those underneath throws to the runningbacks for 1st downs. That is of some concern.

Tackling down the stretch, particularly at the start of the second half. A lot of arm tackling. However, it did stabilize later by the end of the 3rd quarter.

Overall, I thought it was a great game to watch as an ND fan. Let me reiterate that. Sometimes especially in the past, games like these would be close and a lot of things would go on that would want you to pull out all of your hair and being just grateful we pulled off a win. It was nice to just shut down and close a game we were supposed to win. GO IRISH!

EG had a great game. Some first game sloppiness but still handled business. Social teams was vastly improved

Watched the whole damn thing. Their Oline is as advertised. NOT VERY GOOD. Contain Funchess (sp?) on offense. He's the Gallon right now. On D. Their D line isn't as good as they claim it to be. The secondary is good. But with the potential ankle injury to Peppers. We should have our shots. ESPECIALLY. . If EG can be as patient in the pocket as he was today.

Once EG got in the groove there was no stopping him.  I was a little uneasy about the defense but after awhile was very encouraged.  Cody Riggs is good!  Our tailbacks are awesome!  BK revealed nothing except how dynamic EG is.  ScUM's CB's will have a lot to think about.

One more time for the last time, F*** MICHIGAN!

Skip the pep rally next week.  Forget about who you're playing.  Read the freaking playbook, understand your freaking assignments, and catch the freaking football.

If you can do those things, you will win.  If not, you will lose.

I'll just say this, if that's a rusty Everett Golson, then this offense is going to be elite sooner than later.

Re: *****RICE POST-GAME THREAD*****

My thoughts are pretty simple:

1. They pounded a team they should have pounded. They haven't always done that...particularly in the opener.

2. In the past, when they've started out sloppy, the generally play an ugly grind it out game. They didn't today. They gathered themselves and took control the way they should have.

3. Defense was athletic and made some solid plays...they also broke down a good amount. Rice didn't always make them pay, but Michigan has the talent to. I'm predicting a conservative approach defensively next week (they shouldn't need to stunt a ton to win the battle in the trenches and if rather make Michigan earn their way).

4. Pleased with return game. Riggs was a nice get.

5. +2 turnovers on the day. Awesome. If 2012 taught us anything it's that winning the turnover battle -- not to mention taking care of the ball -- can go a long way.

6. They need Collinsworth back. He may not even be the fifth most athletic safety on the team, but I'd say the value of having him on the field calling out coverages was obvious today.

He really looked good. Pocket Awareness, Touch, Strong Arm and an expanded playbook. This kid could have a great yr.
