Count me as stunned that he beat out Okwara. Now my expectations are that this guy is going to play like Aaron Lynch.

I don't follow practices or camps or any of that stuff... but i have heard that Trumbetti is a monster and full of explosive moves.

Not sure this is a good sing or a bad sign. Usually true freshmen shouldnt beat out true juniors unless they are aaron lynch/stephon tuitt.

Re: Trumbetti Starting at DE

Why shouldn't it just mean he is THAT good? We have precedent for this with DEs and it's not a bad thing IMO.

Was just about to type the same thing.

This is either a great thing or a terrible thing. Generally speaking a true frosh starting at that position from day one is not a good sign. I'm very confident he will develop into a very good player for us over time, I'm just wary of him being that player from the outset.

Hopefully he can break the mold.

Where is that precedent?

I'm sure it's happened before, but man, you'd have to go back a ways to find a defensive end that has started since day one.

IIRC Lynch and Tuitt (both much more talented than Trumbetti) played sparingly vs USF and didnt play a down vs Michigan

Probably not a good thing.  I mean Kelly has said It time and time again.......Its almost impossible for young kids to come In and get up to speed In a single semester.  Maybe hes different but I wouldnt bet on It.  What happened to Rochell?  Or Is he going to be playing mostly on the interior?  What happneed with Okwara, I thought he was making great strides?  Or was that Onwualu?

Exactly. Both played a handful of snaps that game.

Don't think either played meaningful minutes until MSU where Lynch went off.

Re: Trumbetti Starting at DE

To me it sounds like a motivation tactic by Kelly. Ill be surprised if okwara isnt starting on august 30.

Re: Trumbetti Starting at DE

Just realized there are actually 3 ways to classify frosh, particularly those that play right away:

True frosh- Jaylon Smith

EE frosh- Trumbetti and Rees (which allowed him to get the jump early on over the more heralded Hendrix).

RS frosh- McGlinchey (and actually at ND that is not technically correct, as I believe the university prefers they are listed per their academic class, so it might only be 2).

I think this is it. I also thought this was a way to motivate Okwara to standout from the others. I say it is a good thing. I don't think the coaches are blind, it is either Okwara is good but not good enough over the others so they are trying to motivate him or Trumbetti is actually the next coming at DE and we just don't know about it yet.

Re: Trumbetti Starting at DE

It doesn't really matter who starts. They all will play a good amount especially to start off the year. My guess is the rotation will get paired down as the year goes on. I don't think we will see anybody except Sheldon and maybe Jarron take a majority of the snaps.

Re: Trumbetti Starting at DE

Okwara got passed on the depth chart by Trumbetti.

Rochell backs up Ishaq on the other side. So right now the DLine looks like:

RDE: Ishaq, Rochell
DL: Jones, Matuska/Cage/Mowakah?
DL: Day, Bonner
LDE: Trumbetti, Okwara

Re: Trumbetti Starting at DE

Kelly looked pretty honest when he said Trumbetti has separated himself from his class.

I imagine Big Red when he got on campus and started working out with the team saw a opportunity and made the most of it.
