Anyone ever explain to you what they represent?

It's actually pretty cool.

Yes.

There are 18 slashes.

Each slash is at a 42 degree angle. One end zone pointing towards the dome, the other toward the basilica.

1842 = year ND was founded.

Also it should be noted and Gavin, I read the article about the FieldTurf on und.com, There will be small shamrocks on the 35 yard lines to keep consistent with all ND playing surfaces.

That's cute and all... but they still make us look like we're stuck in the 19th Century. There are other ways to represent when Notre Dame was founded. Ways other than the end zones.

I seriously don't get why so many people are butt hurt about the stripes. They have been there forever. ITs a staple, certain things you can change and update, some you gotta leave.

How many of you every thought you would see the day ND got field turf? or a LOGO at midfield??? ND didnt need that fancy **** to get Floyd, THE 1000000 NFL Te's, Te'o, NIx, Tuitt, Smith and the dozens of other top recuits it got. Do you want kids that dont care about that and want to come to ND for what it is, or come because its the new Oregon?

How would Yankee fans feel if they changes the pinstirpes and turned then horizontal? Or the Cowboys took the star of the helmet and made it a horse or Cowboy?

Re: Oh ya...its comin'

No Grumpy, you miss the point.  ND needs to meld into the norm and do everything, everybody else is doing.  Words in the end zones will make everything so much better and the field will be epic...most likely the best thing in history.  Without words in the end zone, ND's field, and therefore ND, is an archaic nothing.

The irony of this post amuses me.

What exactly makes those who prefer no stripes "butt hurt," and what makes those who prefer stripes "not butt hurt?"

Agree. lets get with the times and take that last step that's keeping us from enjoying games and the team from winning a title.

We can get with the times while still representing when ND was founded. Each endzone can be colored ND colors, and say "1842 Mother $%@#ers!"

The only person qualified to make a statement about the symbolic meaning of the slashes is brussellsprout.

Re: Oh ya...its comin'

Posting photos of the old turf designs is meaningless to this discussion. I think this whole "the slashes have meaning" is unique to the new field design. There are 18 slashes on the new design and they are drawn at more acute angles.

--- remmuh80 wrote:

It's actually not true.

there are 20 slashes total on the field and geometrically impossible for the slashes to be point at the Dome and the Basillica.  One endzone does go towards that direction... the other goes the opposite way as the Dome.

The Stripes from the student section do not run torward the Dome or the Basillica.

But I am probably wrong.     Here shows the 20 lines.
