based on both announcing same time frame, believe they go with Urban and OSu.   would be surprised if either pick ND.

Re: Hilliard/Cornell

I'm thinking they will commit to osu since they big is down and osu can go undefeated in the weakest conference in the nation and play for big bowl games every year.would be nice if nd can snag them both.

Sorry, it's one of the classic images on our board.  But in all reality, I think the writing is on the wall, but will not count the chickens before they hatch.  Good luck to both teams on a much anticipated announcement.

Re: Hilliard/Cornell

if hilliard picks OSU then kelly and the staff better stay on him until signing day because you know urban will do the same if he picks ND. I dont know how ND could have botched cornells recruitment so much. Can't put it all on diaco. i dont know what got into him last year maybe he was sick of recruiting or maybe he was cranky from the crappy season ND's Def was having but i have heard nothing but negative things about his recruiting style lately.

Re: Hilliard/Cornell

I am pretty sure whoever Hilliard commits to it will be over with.  He is not the type to flip or go through all of that.  If/when he commits he is going to bring others with him, Cornell being the first.  Much of the speculated guys include Baker, Harris, and Burrell and maybe an outside shot at Christian Kirk.  Once he commits, it's going to be over with.

Other than the timing, is there any reason to believe there is a connection between the announcements?

wheels91 ...yes

They've each talked publically many times about playing together in college.

I thought our chances with Hilliard were 50/50 until Cornell announced that he'll also be committing on the same day.  It certainly seems like it'll be a package deal...and since Cornell has cooled on Notre Dame, it certainly seems like the Suckeyes will be the pick.

This'll be a big swing-and-miss for the staff, too, if that's the way it plays out.  To me, these were the two were must-gets of this cycle...impact defensive players from pipeline Midwest high schools.  It's not going to be easy to pull Ohio kids with Meyer in Columbus, and I'm sure that the staff did all it could, but these two losses will sting.

If the staff did everything they could do (which it seems they did, Hilliard has been on campus a lot and Cornell has been at least twice), then I'm not sure I'd call it a "big swing-and-miss", I'd just call it recruiting.

A "big swing-and-miss" would imply that the staff didn't go to great lengths to get these guys, particularly Hilliard.

Everyone, mistakenly, assumed that Cornell was a Notre Dame lock. He never really was and there were indications as early as February that he was not heading ND's way. As for Hilliard, I'm not sure what else the staff could have done.

that's more than fair, am

It's just symantics.  I never meant to imply that the staff didn't work hard, here.  I was only saying that these two recruiting losses will be pretty bitter.  To me, these were the two biggest chips in this cycle for the reasons I gave above.  Coming up empty here is a big loss.

And you're right...sometimes that's just the way it goes.

Why is it the most important recruits are the ones ND doesn't get ?

It will be a couple of years before we know who the top recruits will be.

Tech, never underestimate Meyer's Catholicism and ties to Catholic programs in Ohio.

Meyer knows how to recruit those Notre Dame strongholds in Ohio better than probably any coach in tOSU's recent history.

Also don't underestimate Hilliard's desire for new experiences. St. X being like Notre Dame may have actually hurt Notre Dame's chances with a St. X kid for once.

I bet Urban has been having dreams for months about OSU winning a national championship with Cornell and Hilliard....

well, for starters...

"Why is it the most important recruits are the ones ND doesn't get?"

...these two would instantly have been the highest-rated recruits in our class.

I realize that the "stars" aren't everything, but you can't discard them entirely.  Alabama is rolling along in large part because they continuously restock the cupboard with cream of the crop up-and-coming talent.  Hilliard and Cornell are impact defensive prospects from pipeline high schools in our region.  Getting them wouldn't have been a surprise like was the case when we pulled Tuitt from Georgia, or Manti from Hawaii, or Nix and Lynch from Florida.

Re: Hilliard/Cornell

There's a long way to NSD, boys. Yes, they would have been great additions to this class but at least they aren't going to a program that is on our schedule and there are other good players that ND is in the running for at their positions.

Recruiting isn't an exact science - the important thing is the coaching staff did everything they could.

I don't normally get worked up over recruiting until at least September, but this bit of bad news made me want to kick puppies.
