Re: Slaughter Denied Appeal
Where do you guys think we go at Safety?
I assume Farley has secured a spot in the rotation. Who steps up beside him? I think we may play up to 4 people back there pretty consistently.
Collinsworth, Hardy, Shumate, Badger, Redfield.
How about Baratti? Seems the staff likes him.
And then there is Turner and Prosise.

My guess is it is whoever the coaches think gives us the best chance to win.

Re: Slaughter Denied Appeal
Bummer for Slaughter, I still think he'll have a nice productive NFL career.
We will be okay with the guys waiting in the wings, but it would have been great to have the hard hitting Slaughter.

Would like to have Slaughter back, but I think we'll be fine, considering the depth at safety.

Re: Slaughter Denied Appeal
How can the NCAA even think that is acceptable? A ND grad looking for a 6th year should never have an issue being approved. What a crock. CWND78 wrote: No 6th year.

Re: Slaughter Denied Appeal
Nothing Earth shaking about the NCAA denial, CBK and staff expected this. I think a guy like Dayne Crist would have had a better shot at a 6th year as he lost basically two seasons due to injury.

Collinsworth would be my first guess. This would be my second. amo529 wrote:Shumate...love his instincts...

RE: Slaughter Denied Appeal
Shumate can be a star, time for him to shine IMO.
I dont think Farley is locked into a starting job. He has leg up on others, but obviously with the youth back there, anything can happen.

RE: Slaughter Denied Appeal
If kelly goes with the most talented guy then its redfield but if he goes with the most fundamentally sound guy who knows the system then its collinsworth.
I think shumate stays in that nickle role he was good in when he wasn't playing alabama

RE: Slaughter Denied Appeal
Eventually Redfield and Shumate make a potentially all american safety duo. They can rule the middle of the backfield and make it look easy someday, I believe.

RE: Slaughter Denied Appeal
I'd say we have three safeties (Farley, Collinsworth, and Shumate) competing for 2 starting spots.

RE: Slaughter Denied Appeal
i would guess that farley's locked in. he was so good last year, and i can't imagine anyone passing him. i would guess that collinsworth and shumate are battling for the other starting spot, but with guys like badger, prosise, and even redfield waiting in the wings, it's really tough to say. what an awesome problem it is to have so much quality depth! grapie wrote: I'd say we have three safeties (Farley, Collinsworth, and Shumate) competing for 2 starting spots.

Re: Slaughter Denied Appeal
Farley and Shumate to start the season. Farley and Redfield to end the season with Shumate being the key sub. CWND78 wrote: Where do you guys think we go at Safety?

RE: Slaughter Denied Appeal
I would be slightly shocked if Badger ever saw MEANINGFUL time at ND. Notice I typed meaningful there. Not only does Badger have some serious talent in front of him, but more importantly, he took two years off of football and the talent at saftey is WAAAY brighter than it was when he committed to Chucky Dubs. According to his offer list on Scout, he was at one point offered by some pretty impressive schools. I'd be interested to know if those were committable or conditional offers by LSU and FSU? Either way...Badger will probably never be a starter at ND. I'm pretty sure I remember hearing some rumblings about the current staff hoping that he wouldn't be able to find his way back to South Bend after his mission. I could be wrong, though. shaunzo wrote: i would guess that farley's locked in. he was so good last year, and i can't imagine anyone passing him.
