But this cant be right...we are where we are now because of Bob Marcum

Not so fast my friends

Bob came to Marshall in July of 2002. According to Chuck Landon, we missed the boat in 2001.  And it sounds like it was because people associated with the negotiations couldnt keep their mouths shut.  One of the common people involved was the internet fan favorite on some sites, Dshoe.

"In attendance, according to multiple sources, were then-Conference USA commissioner Mike Slive; then-East Carolina athletic director Mike Hamrick, who was the chairman of the league's expansion committee; then-Marshall head football coach Bobby Pruett; then-Marshall president Dan Angel; then-Marshall chief of staff Keith Spears; and ESPN executive Dan Shoemaker."

Thought the same thing when I read that this morning.

I know too that I'm sure things weren't as 100% as Chuck likes to imply as well, we all know he likes to take some liberties with those things.

But I'm also willing to wager that Dshoe hasn't always been in Marshall's corner behind the scenes. But when things workout for them, he's in the front of the line taking all of the credit.

99% of Marshall fans are completely ignorant when it comes to Bob Marcum.  He did a lot to change the "infrastructure" of the athletic department.  Was he great at his job?  No, in my opinion he wasn't great.  However, you get what you pay for.  He got us through the toughest time in the last 30 years of Marshall football by dealing with probation and the move to CUSA.  In my opinion the only thing he REALLY screwed up in some of our football scheduling and when he hired Jirsa.

There just aren't enough people that know what goes on behind the scenes.

I agree Maniac. Totally.

We paid him virtually nothing, and he got us through a bunch of crap.

Main problem with Marcum, IMO, is he was brought in as a two-year fix it guy and overstayed that time.

I don't recall the deal with the Southern Conference. This is the first I have heard of it.

I do remember The deal to move the 0lympic sports to the Horizon League and it feel through hours before the announcement was to be made. That was the year the move to C-USA needed to happen. We had momentum in the program and it was time to move up. but they couldn't throw the other sports under the bus for football. Even though football pays the bills. If I was in charge I would have thrown the other sports under the so called bus and went to C-USA for football only. I thought it was one of the biggest mistakes the Athletic Dept has made in the last 10 years or so.
