Freshmen Tracker: Wisconsin Game

Freshmen Tracker: Wisconsin Game

HOUSTON - LSU under Les Miles has made no bones about its intentions of playing true freshmen early and often. In the last two seasons the Tigers have brought a combined 29 first-year freshmen to the field, both times ranking top five in the nation.

Earlier this week Miles suggested LSU would play "six to 12" true freshmen in tonight's opener versus Wisconsin, with as many as six slated to play key roles, per the Tigers' tenth-year head coach.

Now that game night has arrived, TSD will track LSU's true freshmen for you, updating below which guys take the field, when and in what capacity ... and all live.

Keep track of the debuts of Leonard Fournette, Brandon Harris, Trey Quinn, Jamal Adams and many more as the game goes on.

Re: Freshmen Tracker: Wisconsin Game

LSU received the opening kickoff. Out there on that first special teams play ...

Leonard Fournette as the deep back, being led out by Terrence Magee.

Jamal Adams was also in the middle of the front line of the return team.

Other non-freshmen seen out there: Deion Jones, Duke Riley, Kendell Beckwith, Kenny Hilliard, Travis Dickson, Logan Stokes and Connor Neighbors.

Re: Freshmen Tracker: Wisconsin Game

Trey Quinn started the game as one of two wide receivers on the field along with Travin Dural. Quinn started off in the slot.

Leonard Fournette also got in the game on the first drive and received a carry. Gained about five yards. He came out for the third down attempt

Fournette also fielded LSU's second kickoff return of the game. This one he returned 24 yards to the LSU 27

Re: Freshmen Tracker: Wisconsin Game

Quinn continues to be LSU's second receiver at the beginning of a new possession. Lot of trust he earned in Fall Camp. Reminds me of Odell Beckham in 2011, who earned enough trust to play alongside Rueben Randle in the Oregon opener that season.

---

To the best of my knowledge the only true freshmen we've seen so far have been Quinn, Fournette and Adams.

Adams back in on the punt team as a gunner. Look for him on just about every special teams unit this season.

Davon Godchaux is your first defensive tackle to rotate in for the starters. He lined up next to Christian LaCouture on a second down play midway through the first quarter.

What a surprise there. Not Frank Herron, not Greg Gilmore and not Lewis Neal, but true freshman Davon Godchaux.

Deondre Clark comes on third-and-6 in the first quarter. He was the fourth defensive end to appear in the game after Hunter, Rasco and Bower.

Early second quarter and we're still seeing a good bit of Godchaux and Clark in there on the defensive line.

Re: Freshmen Tracker: Wisconsin Game

Jamal Adams makes his second appearance on defense with about 10 minutes left in the second quarter. He was also in on the previous defensive series. Replaces Ronald Martin to start a drive in LSU territory after a Tiger fumble on the previous possession.

He came off the next play though

Trey Quinn reels in his first career reception midway through the second-quarter. Picked up 11 yards with a nice one-hand grab in the flat.

Re: Freshmen Tracker: Wisconsin Game

Brandon Harris makes his debut at QB with 4:21 to play in the second quarter with LSU down 17-7.

First play was a reverse to Quinn (sniffed out), second was a zone read keeper than netted nothing (might've made the wrong read) and on third-and-9 Harris was sacked in the face of a quick pass rush and poor blocking.

Re: Freshmen Tracker: Wisconsin Game

Cameron Gamble in there to kick off to begin the second half. Trent Domingue handled the only kickoff of the first half, so Miles with a change the next time around. And Gamble rewarded LSU's decision: He crushed one into the end zone, even despite moving back five yards for delay of game (indefensible considering the play opened the half).

Re: Freshmen Tracker: Wisconsin Game

Ed Paris becomes the eighth true freshmen to see the field as he went out on the kickoff coverage team late in the third quarter with about 2:15 to play in the frame.

Re: Freshmen Tracker: Wisconsin Game

Gamble had two nice kicks to begin his LSU career, but with 12:08 to play in the fourth quarter he just kicked one out of bounds. Gives UW the ball on the 35 yard line.

Add a ninth to the mix: LSU and Miles confirm Monday that Donnie Alexander got in briefly on special teams.
