FINAL: LSU 28, Wisconsin 24

HOUSTON — Ben and I are live at NRG Stadium in beautiful Houston for No. 13 LSU season's opener against No. 14 Wisconsin. The roof is closed and the artificial turf's been laid, and the two teams will kick off at 8 p.m. ESPN has the broadcast.

We'll be providing updates throughout the contest, so follow along for some fresh commentary and opinions that the TV crew may miss. We'll also have loads coming post-game with stories, video and more following the contest.

If you want to read up on the teams, check out GAMEDAY STORY which has the links to all of the preview content we posted throughout the last couple weeks. And stay tuned as we'll be rocking in just a few more hours.

One last game preview, this time a video shot inside NRG Stadium with me and Annabel Stephan: LINK

FWIW some of the LSU special teams guys have begun coming out to stretch. Still more than 80 minutes to go until kickoff.

Re: LIVE GAME THREAD: LSU vs. WISCONSIN

More of the Tiger team coming out now for warmups. Have a quick tidbit or two I can share ...

- I missed this note from earlier in the week, but WR Quantavius Leslie is now wearing jersey No. 1, having turned in his previous digits (19). The wide-outs, when going through their pregame drills so far, have gone in the following order: Travin Dural, John Diarse, Quantavius Leslie, Trey Quinn and Avery Peterson. Could easily be the order in which you should expect the WRs to play. Reminder: No Malachi Dupre (ankle) tonight.

Official kick time for this one has just been adjusted (moved back) to 8:15 p.m. Keep an eye on the Georgia/Clemson game, as that current affair on ESPN - and how long it takes to resolve itself - will dictate the start time of LSU vs. Wisconsin.

Re: LIVE GAME THREAD: LSU vs. WISCONSIN

Some more warmups observations ...

- S Jalen Mills is here, dressed out and going through warmups per the usual. Still expecting him to start and play in this game with no hesitation or being "withheld" ... In fact he's now running with the first-team secondary in warmups. He and Ronald Martin are in the back while Tre'Davious White and Jalen Collins (in Rashard Robinson's place) are at the corners. FWIW the second-team defensive backfield had Ed Paris and Dwayne Thomas at corners with Jamal Adams and Rickey Jefferson at safeties (no Corey Thompson).

- The starting OL is exactly as you'd imagine, from left: La'el Collins, Vadal Alexander, Ethan Pocic, Hoko Fanaika and Jerald Hawkins. No Elliott Porter out there, as was first reported yesterday.

- First LB corps up: Lamar Louis, D.J. Welter and Kwon Alexander. Next up: Deion Jones, Kendell Beckwith and Duke Riley.

Re: LIVE GAME THREAD: LSU vs. WISCONSIN

Maybe the most interesting news yet ... Quentin Thomas is working out with the starters at defensive tackle, next to Christian LaCouture. Thought it might be Frank Herron with Thomas' partially torn bicep, but the redshirt junior is in there at least in warmups.

Re: LIVE GAME THREAD: LSU vs. WISCONSIN

LSU SID Michael Bonnette just made a walk down press row to confirm the players that did not make the trip:

Malachi Dupre stayed home because of injury.

Elliott Porter, Rashard Robinson and Maquedius Bain stayed home because of "disciplinary" action. No other details given

Re: LIVE GAME THREAD: LSU vs. WISCONSIN

LSU ends up punting, but some notes from the first drive ...

- Fournette returned the opening kick. Interesting to see him back deep, being led out by Magee.

- We saw all three RBs out there on the opening drive - Magee, Fournette and Hilliard.

- Quinn started in the slot, next to Dural, but we saw plenty of Diarse on the first drive, too.

- Saw a little zone read look from Jennings. He kept on one short-yardage play and picked up a first down.

Re: LIVE GAME THREAD: LSU vs. WISCONSIN

For the Tiger defense, the nickel look shown involved a straight swap of Dwayne Thomas for Lamar Louis. So no moving Mills down into the box and shuffling from there.

TOUCHDOWN WISCONSIN

WR Reggie Love started the play out wide, went into motion and took the jet sweep around the left side for a 45-yard touchdown run. He wasn't touched by the LSU defense.

PAT good.

Re: LIVE GAME THREAD: LSU vs. WISCONSIN

On the TD run, looked like there was a bit of miscommunication by LSU. Lamar Louis originally lined up on Love, Mills called him off, but when he went into motion, nobody followed him and he was able to get around the edge mostly unimpeded.

Welter looked painfully slow there

Wisconsin line playing a bit chippy.... Hope our guys stay disciplined and don't fall for any trap fouls

So much for improved punting

Re: LIVE GAME THREAD: LSU vs. WISCONSIN

Jennings has not been anywhere near accurate or consistent throwing the football yet. Passing-wise has been very reminiscent of the Outback Bowl. Two series in Jennings is 1-of-3 for 10 yards.

In other news: Keehn just punted one 19 yards on his second effort. Bad shank.

Re: LIVE GAME THREAD: LSU vs. WISCONSIN

FIELD GOAL WISCONSIN

The Badgers' drive stalls after LSU forces McEvoy to throw it away on third-and-6. Wisconsin settles for a 51-yard fielg goal attempt and Gaglianone nails it.

Highlight of that drive for Wisconsin was a 23-yard run by McEvoy on a busted play. LSU looked a bit foolish, as LaCouture and about two other defenders missed tackles. That's the reason why Wisconsin started him instead of Stave.
