GAME THREAD: LSU falls to Georgia, 69-61

GAME THREAD: LSU falls to Georgia, 69-61

LSU (18-11, 9-8) will try to end its regular season on a high note Saturday with Georgia (17-12, 11-6) in Baton Rouge for the final game of the 2014 SEC schedule.

The Tigers fell to Georgia in Athens 91-78 on Feb. 6, victim of a Bulldog parade to the free-throw line, where UGA attempted a whopping 46 freebies.

Johnny Jones' crew is hoping for a different advantage and feel to the return game Saturday, with LSU putting on Senior Day festivities at 3:45 p.m. (tip-off is set for 4 p.m.) for Andre Stringer and Shavon Coleman.

An LSU win would push the Tigers to a likely six-seed in the SEC Tournament, meaning the Bayou Bengals would end up opposite Florida's side of the bracket and could even see Georgia again in a second-round game on Friday in Atlanta.

A loss, however, would send the Tigers end to either an eight- or a nine-seed, meaning a meeting with Florida would be a lot closer at hand.

TSD will have full coverage of the game in the PMAC, but before then here's projected starters and a link to discuss the action.

PROJECTED STARTERS

LSU (18-11, 9-8)

Anthony Hickey (5-11, 182, Jr.) – 9.1 ppg, 3.7 apg, 1.8 spg
G Andre Stringer (5-10, 190, Sr.) - 11.6 ppg, 2.7 rpg, 2.9 apg
G/F Shavon Coleman (6-5, 195, Sr.) – 8.8 ppg, 4.1 rpg, 41.8% FGs
Jordan Mickey (6-8, 220, Fr.) – 13.1 ppg, 7.6 rpg, 3.3 bpg
F Johnny O’Bryant (6-9, 256, Jr.) – 15.9 ppg, 7.9 rpg, 50.0% FGs

Georgia (17-12, 11-6)

Kenny Gaines (6-3, 195, So.) - 13.1 ppg, 2.4 rpg, 44.3% FGs
Charles Mann (6-5, 210, So.) - 13.1 ppg, 4.0 rpg, 3.2 apg
F Brandon Morris (6-7, 215, So.) - 9.0 ppg, 3.6 rpg, 52.4% FGs
F Donte' Williams (6-9, 225, Sr.) - 5.1 ppg, 5.2 rpg, 1.2 bpg
Marcus Thornton (6-8, 235, Jr.) - 8.3 ppg, 6.0 rpg, 1.4 bpg

Re: GAMEDAY THREAD: LSU vs. Georgia

As projected it's Hickey-Stringer-Coleman-Mickey-JOB for LSU. Martin is taking a seat in the starting lineup so that Andre Stringer can get the go on Senior Day in the PMAC.

And for UGA it's as above: Gaines-Mann-Morris-Williams-Thornton.

Stay tuned for more live updates on the ballgame ...

Nice Senior Day festivities for Shavon Coleman and Andre Stringer. Fans really let Stringer have it and got the "Thank you, seniors" chant going. Nice moment before the game, which is set to tip-off in five minutes.

Re: GAMEDAY THREAD: LSU vs. Georgia

And we're underway.

Morris goes right at LSU's interior and scores on UGA's opening possession.

Next time Dawgs touch it, Thornton hits a jumper.

Stringer answered with a three, though, and it's 4-3, Georgia, with 18:33 to play in the first half.

Re: GAMEDAY THREAD: LSU vs. Georgia

8-7, Georgia

15:45 until halftime

LSU getting out-rebounded pretty noticeably in the early going, giving UGA several second-shot opportunities ... Stringer now has five points to lead the way ... Tigers are trying to show Georgia zone on defensive end.

12 all, 14:07 to play.

Mickey just made a three-point play the hard way to tie the game. Mickey now has five points, joining Stringer.

Martin coming into the game now for Coleman. It's LSU's first sub of the ballgame.

Stringer and Gaines swap threes, and it's 15 all.

Stringer now with 8 points on 3-of-4 shooting, 2-of-3 from three.

Quarterman in for Hickey.

Re: GAMEDAY THREAD: LSU vs. Georgia

Another three from Stringer - he's carrying LSU.

18 all with 11:55 till the break, as Gaines now has six for UGA, heating up as well.

The Dawgs are shooting 57% to start the game. LSU - 64%. Difference is UGA leads in rebounding 8-2 and has three more shot attempts than do the Bulldogs.

Re: GAMEDAY THREAD: LSU vs. Georgia

21-20, Georgia
8:15 until halftime

Offense has grinded to a halt for the Tigers, who can't get a single thing going in the halfcourt lately. Georgia is taking away the Bayou Bengals' inside game quite effectively.

Stringer just subbed back in after a brief rest because Jones is looking for someone to get some movement offensively. Players just standing and watching.

Re: GAMEDAY THREAD: LSU vs. Georgia

Back-and-forth action the last 3-4 minutes. LSU leads Georgia, 26-24, with 4:38 until the break.

Stringer just made a beautiful high-arching lay-up over defenders to give himself a game-high 13 points. It's been pretty clinical from him so far on offensive side of the floor.

HALFTIME
Georgia leads LSU, 30-28

Best thing - and really the only big thing - going for Tigers today has been Stringer, who has a game-high 13 points. Gaines now has 12, on 4-of-4 shooting from deep, for the Dawgs.

Re: GAMEDAY THREAD: LSU vs. Georgia

43-35, Georgia
15:22 remaining

Gaines picked up right where he left off, now 6-of-6 from downtown for 18 points. UGA as a team is hitting everything from deep right now. Tigers are struggling to keep Georgia off the scoreboard.

It's now 47-35, Georgia.

Dawgs are in the midst of 9-0 run (17-7 run since halftime).

Georgia is now 8-of-9 from three.

Re: GAMEDAY THREAD: LSU vs. Georgia

Tigers answering, now on a 5-0 run of their own.

With 12:18 to play, it's 47-40, Georgia.

Stringer, with 15, still the only LSU player in double figures scoring.

Not going in the right direction for LSU. Dawgs just getting way too many wide-open looks at the basket.

Re: GAMEDAY THREAD: LSU vs. Georgia

BTW, we now know LSU will have one of the following two SEC Tournament fates ...

Win tonight, and LSU is the 6-seed in Atlanta, where it would play the winner of the Vandy/Miss State game (Wednesday night) in the late game on Thursday.

Lose tonight, and LSU is the 7-seed in Atlanta, where it would play Alabama at 7 p.m. ET Thursday night.

Either way, LSU will be on the "Kentucky side" of the bracket, not the "Florida side."
