Re: LIVE GAME THREAD: LSU vs. Kent State

Changes to the starting lineup, made official by LSU 20 minutes prior to kickoff:

Freshman Tre'Davious White will start at CB in place of Jalen Collins.

Sophomore Micah Eugene will start at S in place of Craig Loston, who sat out the second half of the UAB game with a leg injury, according to Les Miles.

The rest should be status quo, although I'd expect to see a healthy amount of Corey Thompson at safety if Loston's resting the entire game. Also, the buzz around Rashard Robinson continues. Look for No. 21 to see a lot of time tonight at CB.

Re: LIVE GAME THREAD: LSU vs. Kent State

Tigers have the ball first, and Jeremy Hill is the starter at RB.

Through the first five or six plays, he's been in there on every down ... and as I type that he scores, from 58 yards out. Folks, Les may not want to admit it just yet, but that's your best RB on the team. And he's already in that kind of shape.

With Micah Eugene playing in the back, here's how the substitution pattern is working when LSU goes from its base 4-3 set to nickel (4-2-5): D.J. Welter and Tahj Jones come out as Kwon Alexander and Dwayne Thomas come in. My best guess is that Rashard Robinson will be next up as the dime back when LSU wants a sixth DB in there.

RE: LIVE GAME THREAD: LSU vs. Kent State

I thought coming in that this would be the game that LSU reintroduces Jeremy Hill as the featured back. It's obviously early, but he's gotten all the reps so far and it looks like Les is testing him to carry the load tonight. Assuming all goes according to plan, he'll be right back where he was at the end of last season.

Another TD from the Tiger offense. After a long pass down the left sideline to Travin Dural got LSU on the KSU side of the field, Mettenberger connected with Jarvis Landry in the end zone to double the Tigers' lead. The throw itself wasn't spectacular, more of a lob and trust heave, but Mett's mobility in the pocket to buy time to make the throw was impressive.

To be honest I actually thought Mett was throwing it up for Odell Beckham. But we won't know that for sure until after the game.

There he is. Knew you couldn't stay away.

So did it look like to you Mett was actually throwing it to Landry? Just curious of another perspective.

RE: LIVE GAME THREAD: LSU vs. Kent State

Tigers force another punt on the ensuing defensive possession after Ego Ferguson devoured the Kent State QB near the Flashes' goal line on a screen pass gone horribly wrong. Ferguson's sack went for a loss of 15 yards.

Other defensive notes: Danielle Hunter was the first DE sub in. So far only he and the starters (Allen and Rasco) have played there ... The DT rotation has been even tighter, but Ferguson and Johnson are showing why ... The Tigers have used multiple personnel packages so far in nickel sets. In one look, Dwayne Thomas came in and Eugene stayed in the back. In another, Corey Thompson came in at deep safety and Eugene dropped down into the box. Lot of guys at safety auditioning for P.T. tonight ... Also, it's been all D.J. Welter so far at Mike LB. No Lamar Louis yet.

There's 4:11 left in the first quarter, and the LSU offense is taking over in great shape - on the 37 of KSU.

Looked like Odell Beckham hurt his hand/wrist on that PI play in the end zone. An injury is the worst possible thing to happen for LSU in this walkthrough game.

Looks like a dislocated finger on TV... There should be no doubt that Hill is our best back

ETA... They just set his finger back in on TV

Yeah Beckham is playing catch with Anthony Jennings right now on the sideline. Looks like he's alright. Pop that finger back where it's supposed to be and keep playing

Jeremy Hill barrels in for his second TD of the night, capping a short 37-yard drive for the Tigers that was ground-heavy.

Another tackle for Tre'Davious White - he looks awfully sharp in his first start at CB ... Also, after mentioning no Lamar Louis just a few minutes ago, No. 23 is now in there at Mike LB. After talking to John Chavis this week, I think Louis will continue to play more and more ... Finally, Christian LaCouture is snagging some first-quarter P.T. and defensive tackle for LSU.

RE: LIVE GAME THREAD: LSU vs. Kent State

Still 21-0, LSU, after one quarter. As Hunter just informed me, if you take out that late 25-yard pass completion for Kent State, the Flashes have just six yards of total offense in the first quarter.

It looked a little gnarly from the jumbotron view we could see, but that wasn't very clear. I just know that he did put his gloves back on and was catching with Jennings on the sideline shortly after it happened. We'll see if he's back out there for this upcoming offensive series.

RE: LIVE GAME THREAD: LSU vs. Kent State

Kent State strikes back. A drive that started in the first quarter, and was aided heavily by the 25-yard pass completion, resulted in six. After Tre'Davious White caused a fumble near the goal line, which LSU couldn't recover, Reardon (KSU QB) ran one in on a bootleg the next play.
