Nuts and Bolts:
- Rivers totaled 6 turnovers (4 INTs 2 fumbles) and looked as bad as I’ve ever seen him. He threw the ball off his back foot and made some poor decision throwing into strong coverages. This isn’t a matter of a single game or two, but a pattern building over a year and a half now of mediocre to poor performance.
Philip is no longer an elite QB. In Norval’s presser this afternoon he even conceded that the bravado the Chargers generally display in attacking all 3 levels unafraid of any NFL defense will change. They will now be more methodical on offense and safe, turning Philip into a game manager as they try and patch up this sieve turnover machine that Rivers has become. This team has no shot of competing with Rivers doing his best Ryan Leaf impression.
- The offensive tackles were roughed up again. How many years will Chargers fans be forced to suffer through Jeromy Clary’s struggles at RT? Clary has scored amongst the dregs of the roster year after year (on my RC) and most players above and below him get replaced at year’s end. When will AJ Smith spend a first round draft pick on a top-tier OT?
The time has come and gone and it’s likely too late for AJ to make that move now. If Gaither continues to struggle with injuries, the play of Harris and Clary will determine the future of AJ Smith and Norval Turner just as much as the play of Philip Rivers will.
- How many excuses can we make for the inability of the Chargers to play with intensity in September? To start the first half? To finish a game? Excuses made after football games fall on deaf ears and for good reason. The NFL is all about results. Have you ever heard or seen a coach more ready and willing to excuse the mistakes of his players and his staff then Norval Turner?
Next Week:
The BYE week has arrived and the Chargers chances of facing the Browns at 3-3 are 50/50 at best. The BYE is inconsistent, but even the BYE week can’t match the topsy-turvy play of the San Diego Chargers. We will have to hope Coach Turner and staff find a way to motivated their flattened and defeated unit before the weekend.
