Thrill’s Eighth Annual Training Camp Diary 2012

The wait is over.    Its finally here.   Chargers Training camp 2012 has begun   !      This off season has seemed incredibly long for some reason.  But the whistle has blown and the team is practicing in it's quest for the elusive title it seeks.

Each year comes with its own brand of excitement but this one may be the mother of all training camps for Bolt fans.   Why?   Because so much is riding on the outcome and so much effort has gone into rebuilding the roster.   We have many new players to evaluate whether  they be drafted, signed , or acquired.      We have a new defensive coordinator and much to prove on both sides of the ball.   Norv and AJ could both be coaching or managing for their jobs.  For them 2012 really could be the end of the world.    So here we go.  Let the drama begin.

As always I will attend as many practices as possible for the next week or so and post a few notes that will give you a feel for the Bolts progression thru training camp.     I hope you enjoy it.

Chime in and if you want to pose a question or two I'll give you a read on it.

As my departed buddy MMQ would say ............Go Chargers !!!

Re: Thrill’s Eighth Annual Training Camp Diary 2012

Thanks Honk,   just got back from first session today.   here are some reflections and impressions .

2/28/12

The team held its first public practice today and it may surprise you to know that Bolt fans from everywhere showed up in force.    The parking lots were full, the lines were long, and curiosity was at an all time high.    If you don’t like crowds stay away from Charger park.    I arrived on time yet had to stand as all bleachers and fence seats were long taken.   I left for the first time without getting a roster from the staff which usually have 100’s of extras.   The thirst for football seems unquenchable.

First Impressions.

Kendall Reyes-   The first player spotted as I arrived surprised me.   I expected a thinly built rookie that might take second or third team snaps.   What we have is a 300 lb well built player who will make significant contributions and probably start.   Kendall showed power and finesse.  He resembled Richard Dent the great Bear’s end in stature.

Robert Meacham-    Meacham’s first public catch was a beautifully ran out.  He drove his cover man inside and when he saw the DB’s foot commit he broke off the pattern to the outside.  River pass was already in the air and Meacham made the catch in stride as he blazed across the sideline for a ten yard gain.   The timing of the play was perfect and shows that already he and Philip are on the same page.   Meacham wearing #12 is an angular player with good lower body power .  He shows good hands and awareness of space.   I predict we will not miss Vincent Jackson much at all.

Roscoe Parish-   Fast in and out of breaks with surprisingly good hands.   Covered by Gilchrist , he beat his man on an out pattern with ease on the play .   A little smaller in stature than Meacham , Parish will push for playing time and seems capable of starting for an NFL team.

Richard Goodman-   seems fit and ready to challenge but didn’t hold onto the ball enough this practice.   I suspect if he is to stay he must start making plays as a receiver.

Dante Rosario-   tall and fast , Rosario made some very athletic catches over the middle.   The coaches seem to like his athleticism and hands.   He was the 2nd best receiver on the field this day.

Ronnie Brown-  wearing #30 Brown consistently moved the ball.  He showed speed on the perimeter the others didn’t and caught the ball well.    I could see him sharing carries with Rhyno or taking over if necessary.  Brown shows big play capability.

Antonio Gates-   simply said he is a new man.   Seriously fans may not recognize him. Gates has lost weight and is faster and lighter on his feet than we have seen snce his early years with us.  Gates made one eye popping catch after another.  Two went for touchdowns .  Gates is back to form and looks more dangerous than ever.

B Taylor safety-   Taylor wore #28 and ran with the first team defense alongside Weddle.    He looked very comfortable in and out of the huddle.  Taylor made spectacular efforts in practice. Unafraid to lay out or sacrifice his body I feel coaches already feel confident about his play.    We may have something here.

Vincent Brown-   this guy was catching everything thrown his way.  Brown runs great routes and seems to box out well and elevate to make the catch.    Its going to be difficult keeping him off of the field.  We have a very nice receiver here.

Jackie Battle- wearing #44 Battle looks to be a physical player who can pound it between the tackles.   He scored on a goal line play where he plowed thru the defense . Battle runs tall and needs to lower his pads more.  His size and athleticism cold be useful but he lost the football when clenched by two defensive players a mistake he wont have the luxury of making if he is to stay.

Ingram-  our #1 pick is as advertised athletically.  Big and thickly built he can battle tackles and gaurds yet get out in coverage .  #54 played with his hand down on some plays and stood up and ran thru gaps on others.   His footwork is very good for a man of his size.   He found his way to the quarterback on several occasions as confirmation of his talents.

Ledarius Green-  very thin. Needs to bulk up.   He has the size and speed to play along with a good pair of hands.  Green at this point looks like a developmental player who can contribute more from the slot or lined up outside.  Green will be wearing #89.

I add my appreciation for your postings!

If possible can you give some updates on the OL positions especially OT?

Appreciate this a great deal brutha Trill.

I do have a couple of questions though about the run down about the camp in general.

During Gates catches, who was covering him?  Spikes, Taylor, someone else?

How often was Mouton rotated in with the first group was he ever in with the first group?

How often did Franklin rotate in if any at all and was he strictly a NT or did he or any other DL player rotate on the DL?

How does that LT look minus JG at the position?

How does "Tyrone" Green look early on?  And do someone else rotate in at LG with the first team OL?

It's kind of a shame we didn't do Hard Knocks, we have a lot of drama and good camp battles.

Ok, do we have great WR's or do we have a problem with DB's?

I think our offense is just going to be great this year, much like 2010 when we finished 1st in total offense and 2nd in scoring despite not having VJ. noidea  I'm excited to see Mathews force defenses to play us more honestly, rather than just keying on Rivers.  I think Gates is going to have a MONSTER year, Floyd will stay mostly healthy and break 1000 yards, and Meachem, Royal and Brown as well as Rosario will be excellent complimentary weapons.  I also think Ronnie Brown has much to offer on 3rd downs, and our special teams may even score some points with Roscoe Parrish returning kicks and punts.

Its going to come down to the play O-line which resides in the health of Jared Gaither.  And I like what I'm hearing out of camp about this new kid Mike Harris, and the possibility that he could push Clary for the starting RT job.

Re: Thrill’s Eighth Annual Training Camp Diary 2012

Thrill!! I'm thrilled this column is up and running. Thanks!

I've felt confident all spring/summer that our offense will click and perform. Conversely, I'm nervous about our defense.

I asked you about this last year (and you answered) but am continually curious when you mention something incredible the offense does - how much of that is on them and how much is our defense getting beat? I know it goes both ways but what I'm asking is - feel free to add any commentary to the offensive wonderful plays how much you think may have been because of defensive badness. If you can even tell that.

Thanks again!

Awesome update Thrill. I believe Reyes will be a good one. I know a lot on board didnt see much of him at the collegiate level, but he is very athletic and disruptive.

Re: Thrill’s Eighth Annual Training Camp Diary 2012

Kelcher, and others wanting to know about our oline.,
This is very much a work in progress.

 http://www.nctimes.com/sports/...6c96fea472.html

As you know Gaither is resting with back spasms .  In his place the team has rotated a rookie #79 from UCLA Mike Harris.   He caught my eye immediately with his size 6'5" with an athletic build .  He seemed to work hard at engaging his blocks and staying with it.   He could run with the linebackers so i give him an early passing grade.   Much will come down to how well he learns his assignments and how much attention to detail he can gleen from the veterans.

Along side of him is big # 75  Mario Henderson a pickup from the Raiders.   He too is extremely large and atheletic.  I like his power and drive blocking.   The two split reps today with the first team.   Edge to Henderson at this juncture but lets pray that Gaithers continues to heal.    The good news is all three are probably better than what we had last year after McNiel went down.  No disrespect to Dombrowski but these guys are better atheletes and built like prototype tackles.

As a unit i will say this much .  There were times they performed like a veteran group of professionals forming nearly perfect pockets and battling to bust holes for the running backs.   Other times they sprung holes and got beat .  This is football.  No matter what i believe we have enough good athletes on the team to forge a very good offensive line.  I already sense a toughness about this group that others didnt seem to possess.  Open competition is great for raising the level of play and that is what is fueling this group.

Hartwick is the leader .  He makes the calls and anchors the young line.   Either side of him are Vazquez who seems to be in better physical condition than previous years.  He opened holes several times and is quite a sight when he gets his big frame running downfield.
Green having played before is handling his assignments well and will be counted on to replace Dielman in the trenches.   I think it would be a good idea to rotate him with another young player to keep him healthy.   The tackles for now are Clary and Gaithers with Henderson backing up both.   Should Clary falter we would be fine with Henderson though i feel he is a better run blocker than a pass protector .   Either way i think we have the size and ability to pound the rock.

Re: Thrill’s Eighth Annual Training Camp Diary 2012

TFG,

You chose good topics that i had wondered about myself on day one.  Here is my take.

During Gates catches, who was covering him?  Spikes, Taylor, someone else?
Spikes and Taylor get the middle coverage underneath and on top but depending on the coverage you will see Weddle , a nickle back, or a LB trying to match up.  So far he has shown he can beat them all.    On the two touchdown plays i witnessed they were deep middle catches policed by the safeties.  He has torched the rookie Taylor on deep sideline routes a few times in camp so far.

How often was Mouton rotated in with the first group was he ever in with the first group?

Moutons name can be heard often .  He has impressed with his hitting and speed.  Id estimate he is getting 30 percent of snaps.

How often did Franklin rotate in if any at all and was he strictly a NT or did he or any other DL player rotate on the DL?

Franklin did get his reps though i heard his name called just once.   He will face competition as a nose tackle but its early yet to tell how the coaches may juggle their line.

How does that LT look minus JG at the position?

I paid attention to this today.  Mario Henderson did an admiral job but the rookie Harris is also impressive and still learning.  I believe both are better than what we had last year.  This competition should be very interesting to watch.

How does "Tyrone" Green look early on?  And do someone else rotate in at LG with the first team OL?

Green plays within his abilities and holds his own on every play.  If he had Dielmans nasty streak he would do better.   He can play this game but he is workmanlike and not as explosive as some would like.

Brewin..   both WR and DBs are good.   We can't read too much into scrimmages just yet.  The defense is not allowed to tackle the QB so most of the time he will complete his pass.   When you do hear of a turnover or deflected pass you can bet the play was a good one by the DB.
