Ronnie Brown a Bolt.
http://www.chargers.com/news/a...b5-326ebdc3bd48With this news, I'm now wondering if Brinkley is on his way out. What do you think?

Good bye Brinkley? Why would we cut the 2nd best RB in our organization without cutting the 3rd or 4th first?

Re: Ronnie Brown a Bolt. Is it goodbye Brinkley?
I think it means goodbye to Baker, with Brown used occasionally, and Brinkley taking some 3rd downs to give Mathews a blow. I honestly hope that Ryno is ready for the load they are about to saddle him up with, because he is BY FAR the best RB option we have in any given situation and he will be leaned on heavily to move the chains.

Why does it mean goodbye to anyone? It's June. Baker is probably not going to stick. 7th rounders generally don't. Brinkley is a known commodity; Brown at this point is not, so we'll see what happens. Pretty sure they're still going to watch the waver wire on cut days.

When Brown was at Auburn, two of the linemen blocking for him, I believe, were McNeil and Green.

Great pickup, he can give us quality starts when Mathews stubs his toe and is out for two games. He's only 30 so he shouldn't have lost a step yet; so as long as he's healthy this is nothing but a huge positive for us.

Re: Ronnie Brown a Bolt. Is it goodbye Brinkley?
HA! I remember a thread a few seasons ago wondering if we should trade for him. Obviously he has more tread on the tires but still very serviceable. I like the pick-up. But I still hope Brinkley gets an opportunity. The limited reps he got, he did great, especially in that KC game. Why hasn't he gotten more of a chance? I wonder...

Re: Ronnie Brown a Bolt. Is it goodbye Brinkley?
If they keep 5 backs, once again (like with the English issue) on the ACTIVE ROSTER (since Brinkley, I believe, is no longer eligible for the practice squad), then what is your depth chart? Do some of you honestly believe that Brinkley beats out Ronnie Brown? Sure, anything is possible, but really? My depth chart now is
RB - Mathews, Brown, Brinkley/Baker/Hayes (the last 2 having the advantage of being able to be placed on the practice squad, so they can be called up to the active roster only in the case of an injury)
FB - McClain, Hester
I guess they could make Brinkley one of the 8 inactives every game, also just in case of injury. So maybe he does stick around. But I highly doubt they put 5 backs on the game day roster.
PS, I removed the Brinkley question from the thread title, since that question is really just my own side note to the main story of signing Brown.

RE: Ronnie Brown a Bolt.
With the move towards 2 TE sets, I don't see 5 backs happening. Plus, we have English (5th olb) and potentially might pick up another CB. Just not sure the numbers will allow it, especially given that Matthews is going to be THE back this year.

RE: Ronnie Brown a Bolt.
30 seems kind of old for someone who came out as a junior in the 2005 draft...that means he was 23 when drafted and 20/21 his freshman season? In any event, since he split carries with Cadilac Williams at Auburn and Ricky Williams for much of his time with the Dolphins, you'd think he still had some tread on the tires.

Re: Ronnie Brown a Bolt.
To me all this signing does is confirm that they strongly believe Ryno is ready to make the leap and carry a heavy load. Ronnie Brown hasn't looked good the last couple seasons, the burst just isn't there anymore. Think I read somewhere that over his last 140 carries he was just barely above 3 YPC. With McClain there for short yardage situations I wouldn't expect to see a RB other than Ryno get more than 2 or 3 carries a game.

Re: Ronnie Brown a Bolt.
Mathews/Brown McClain/Hester Not bad, and there's room to carry a third RB. I still like Brinkley, and we can stash our draft pick Baker on the PS for a season. Excellent move by AJ. Our backfield looks very very good, and we should run a bit more considering the loss of VJ.

Re: Ronnie Brown a Bolt.
No complaint here and I believe he has a bit more in the tank. With Ryno getting the bulk Brown will be able to come in and teams will not be able to relax.

RE: Ronnie Brown a Bolt.
A pleasant suprise we get Brown. i was convinced we would seek a veteran to back up Matthews. Realistically Brown may not see the field often but i like the idea of him being there should Ryhno miss a game or two.

Yeah but Iggles didn't use him that often, and when they did it was another lame ass Andy Reid attempt at a short yardage back which they have NEVER been able to develop. I like the signing, less than I would have liked Hightower, but Brown is a very good receiver and will fit in perfectly in what Norv Turner likes to do on 3rd downs.

RE: Ronnie Brown a Bolt.
Gotta say, AJ's addressed every issue I've had this past offseason and had what appears to be a good draft. I've been critical of AJ given his what last five drafts/offseasons - but I give him an A for this offseason. Never could have predicted it - given AJ's history. Ronnie Brown is just what the doctor ordered and should be a good compliment to Matthews. Much as I think Brinkley is decent - I prefer Brown and give him the nod against our tough schedule this upcoming season. thrill2death wrote: A pleasant suprise we get Brown. i was convinced we would seek a veteran to back up Matthews. RE: Ronnie Brown a Bolt.
I still wouldn't dismiss Baker and Brinkley just because we signed Ronnie Brown. Its not like Brown has set the world on fire the last couple of years and was in demand by all the teams.
I like the signing and look forward who comes out on the other side.

I hope Norv doesn't employ any wildcat sets like they did in Miami for him. I like the pickup because it adds more depth and competition during training camp.

http://www.utsandiego.com/news...brown-depth-rb/Reading in between the lines...the third down thing and the veteran knowledge in picking up the blitz makes him a good fit.
