What are the chances of Chargers making the playoffs?

What are the chances of Chargers making the playoffs?

http://espn.go.com/nfl/standings/_/group/2

My Prediction (not too risky, I know):

AFC West: Denver

AFC South: Indianapolis

AFC: North: Pittsburgh

AFC East: New England

That leaves the following teams fighting over the final 2 spots:

Bengals (5-2)

Jets (4-3)

Texans (4-3)

Ravens (3-3)

Jaguars (3-3)

Chargers (3-3)

Bills (3-4)

Dolphins (2-4)

+ 4 other teams that I'm not considering

Fortunately the AFC North and South teams will get a couple extra losses because they play in tougher divisions.  That said, I'm not sure we can pass 4 of the teams that are currently ahead of us.  I don't think 9-7 will get an AFC team in, which means that we'd have to win 7 of our last 10 games to get us to 10-6.

Can we win 7 of the following 10 games?

Raiders W

@ Giants L

Eagles W

@ Broncos L

Chiefs W

@ Browns W

@ Cowboys L

Bengals L

@ Titans W

Redskins W

Perhaps, but our chances are not that great.  I have us finishing 9-7 and missing the postseason.  What do you guys think?

Re: What are the chances of Chargers making the playoffs?

First great post! Very well stated...

I see five games that the team should win.

Raiders, Chiefs, Browns, Titans, and Redskins...

You said we would have to win seven, so that leaves two more, that leaves us:

Giants, Eagles, Broncos, Cowboys, Bengals..

Now, if we win the five that we should, and that's a big IF...

I think we could beat the Eagles and the Cowboys and I have a weird feeling that we might be able to beat the Broncos in their yard.

But, look at the schedule, we actually do have a chance. The Raiders at home should be a win for sure....the Chiefs look horrible, the Browns even worse, the Titans will be packing it in by that time, and Redskins are pretty much right there with the rest of the bunch.

I think the Chargers could win 10 games...but they definitely need to get a winning streak together and win something like 3-4 games in a row, meaning a (4-0) record in the month of November.

It will be interesting, that's for sure...
A picture's worth a thousand words.

Re: What are the chances of Chargers making the playoffs?

I think an AFC team can get in as a WC with a 10-6 record this year. It isn't just the record, it's also going to come down to the tiebreakers. We lost the tiebreaker to Pittsburgh and Baltimore, but we've got one on the Dolphins. I think we win the same 5 that Honk said. I think we beat the Eagles at home and that leaves us with the Bengals and a possible key tiebreaker against them. I like our chances in those two games specifically because we'll be at home. I expect we'll be in the thick of it till Week 17 ends.

Re: What are the chances of Chargers making the playoffs?

TVWatchingSmiley.gifToday's game was exciting for several reasons. First the D-line played much better football then the last 2 games and again looked like they were able to finally stop the run. I thought Ellison played a good game and he seemd to improve with each snap. I'll eat a little crow for the things I said about Gregory being named our nickle back as he too played a pretty good game. Weddle played well as did Merriman and Phillips overall a good job by the defense.

The O-line, except for Clary, played well enough to get LT some running room and protect Rivers giving him the time needed to complete many longer routes. Clary, on the other hand, can't even hold well and gets called for a penalty on a ole` block. Chambers looks like he has lost his focus and dropped several and I think it may be time to elevate Naanee on the depth chart. Overall a good game by the offence.

We, or maybe I should speak for myself, have been on Norv and RR's a$$ for 2 weeks and giving credit where credit is due Norv showed some large one's going for the 4th and goal and RR dialed up some nice blitz packages with Weddle and Gregory.

But before I go off the deep end we must remember this was the Chiefs. It's a little like USC playing Chula Vista High School, they are supposed to win and play well. The same goes for the Faders next week, we should win convincingly. Let's see how we do against the Giants, Cowboys, Broncos and Philly before we start printing playoff tickets.

Today is the first day of  the rest of your life!

Still have hopes but they are looking slim. Not too excited about todays win as well. When we can actually start playing and looking that good against a real football team then I'll get my hopes up even more.

The final out come does not look bright imo.

Re: What are the chances of Chargers making the playoffs?

Great thread and I think we should re-visit this topic weekly from here on.

I think our main threat is the Bengals and the Texans.  I don't see the other teams making it, even though the Ravens are largely overhyped by the media.  Plus they are in a tougher division than we are, facing the the Bengals and Steelers 4 times collectively.  That might put them out of contention compared to us.  I earlier predicted that the Chargers would win our division and KC would actually make it with a wildcard in the AFC....  Looks like the Broncos have taken the AFC West and WE are in place to take the Chiefs' wildcard spot.

The Bills are toast.  Miami has no QB, and the Jets have a rookie QB.  A good rook, but still a rook.

The Steelers are doing better than I thought but I see cracks starting to form.  I don't think that their final 8 games will be as strong as their first 8.  SAME GOES FOR THE GIANTS in the NFC.

In the end I see it as the Bengals making it and then it being a toss up between us and the Texans.

Anyone care to break down our schedule vs. the Texans' schedule?

I think we can beat any of the teams mentioned but have the best chance at the following record:

Raiders W

@Giants L

Eagles L

@Broncos L

Chiefs W

@Browns W

@Cowboys W (guessing we get HARDWICK back around this time?)

Bengals W

@Titans W

Redskins W

Record 10-6

Texans:

Bills W

Colts L

Titans W

Colts L

Jaguars W

Seahawks L***

Rams W

Dolphins W

Record 9-7

***I think that the Seahawks game will be the deciding factor as long as SD takes care of business.  If the Seahawks lose to the Texans, IMO we'll have a tiebreaker scenario on our hands.

Further:  I'm going to call the Browns and Bengals games this season must wins.

I don't have a lot of hope for the Chargers.  They looked good against a terrible team.. so whatnoidea I'm happy but realistic.... I think they will be 9-7 and that wont be close to enough to get into the playoffs.

I think if they could stay healthy meaning no more major injuries absolutely will make it. But if we loose a major player then no chance.

Re: What are the chances of Chargers making the playoffs?

i sure hope this thread keeps getting bumped for the rest of the season, so when is all said and done we can sort the bandwagon jumping negative Nancy fans who say we have no chance, from the blind faith cant see the sky falling around them fans.

We are still well in the hunt for the playoffs, while the chances are slim and we need help from Denver, im still hoping for a division title. Until there is absolutely 0% chance of being the playoffs we should remain as upbeat as we can and support the team, its easy for me cos im a glass half full kinda guy. lets revisit this thread in January, im hoping that theres gonna be a heaping helping of crow on the ready............

We absolutely can.   Trust me this race is far from over.   Our offense will continue to get better and when we find a running game to go with the passing attack we will be a load for anyone.

The real test is whether our defense can come together.  We wont go far even if we do get into the playoffs if we cannot become more dominant on that side of the ball.   i said 10-6 earlier and stand by that prediction.

i think 10-6 is very realistic, im just a lil worried that that might not be enough for a wildcard, but we wont know where we stand for at least another 5 or 6 weeks, lets hold the excitement/anger til then.......

I Think We Have A Chance Against The Eagles And Giants.

The Eagles proved to have trouble on the west coast against the raiders, and they havn't beaten any competitive teams yet.  and the giants have lost 2 straight, including a blowout to NO.  If We Do beat both those teams and denver loses to baltimore and pitt think about the momentum we'd have going into that game.  Anythings possible, who knows SD can still make it.

I think the Chargers have proven that you can never count them out until they are mathematically eliminated from the Playoffs. They have also shown (under Norv) the propensity to finish the season ridiculously strong and with great momentum...shown by their undefeated regular season record in December (9-0).

Unfortunately, they have also shown that his "hot streak" does not start until their backs are absolutely against the wall and they are in MUST WIN circumstances. Again, it leads to quite the exhilarating ride for Bolts fans...

I'm not ruling out winning the West just yet, Denver still to go to NYG, Indy, Baltimore and Philly. They also have Pittsburgh at home, and I don't think SD is just gonna hand over a W, unless Hoculi calls the game.

We could win the next two and the Broncos lose the next two ( Baltimore and Pitt)  That puts us 1 game back with a game left later on with the Donkeys.  Anything can happen.
