Grice Over Oliver? Really?

Grice Over Oliver? Really?

I thought Oliver looked good and definitely better than Grice. Am I missing something here? Is TT playing to his ego and keeping his draft pick over an undrafted guy?

Anyone surprised by this or is it just me?

I wonder if that means Willie Smith has an injury. Smith left the game briefly. He did come back and do well though. I'm guessing only one of Smith/Harris make the 53.

You know I heard this from a friend. This might not be correct, I apologize. I always include links to anything I post. How did he hear it? I don't know, I'll find out, he's an avid Charger fan.

We shall see.....

Re: Grice Over Oliver? Really?

Will Oliver consistently find wide open running lanes up the middle during the regular season? It seems like he needs that or his game suffers. Grice, OTOH, can navigate along the o-line and burst through wherever there's a crack.

Re: Grice Over Oliver? Really?

Grice is a better all around back similar to our three headed monster.  Oliver is more of a thumper, but he does has some great moves in traffic.  If we keep Grice, he would spell Brown, who would spell Woody, who would spell Mathews, yada yada yada.  Oliver will get the tough yard when we need it.  That gives us variety.  In isolation, if we needed a feature back, I would keep Grice.  With the other three guaranteed a roster spot, I would keep Oliver and use him to pound away at the defense when we have a lead.  Personally, in this situation, I would find a way to keep both for reasons aforementioned by other posters.  In two years we might not have any of the "big three", and both Oliver and Grice are candidates for the poach patrol.

Re: Grice Over Oliver? Really?

I would take Grice.

Grice proved this week he doesn't need perfect blocking to gain yards, he's also a very good receiver. Oliver's production in the Dallas game was due to gigantic running lanes where he was pretty much untouched until first contact brought him down, and he struggled in the other 3 games. Really Dallas' D couldn't lick the **** off the boots of Seattle, San Fran, or Arizona's.

I think it's a clear path for Oliver to the PS, unless Indy really wants him back.

Re: Grice Over Oliver? Really?

I like em both and suspect one makes the team and the other to the PS where he will likely be poached.   I like Oliver a bit more than Grice but they are both really good prospects.   It will come down to other factors including special teams abilities,  pass catching and blocking.

Re: Grice Over Oliver? Really?

After sleeping on it....  It's really unusual to carry 4 runningbacks, let alone 5, so we are faced with sending ONE to the PS.  Since we drafted Grice, and he HAS played exceptionally well, IMO Grice gets the nod.  This is an unfortunate, yet fortunate problem to have.  Oliver will likely get signed to the PS and we can all just hope he isn't picked up by another team.  The only way I see us keeping 5 is if we plan on trading Mathews or Brown, which is unlikely.

Wasn't Grice looked at as Woodys replacement anyways? When Woody is ready of course!

Re: Grice Over Oliver? Really?

I'm in the Grice camp as well. Just like Stine and SYX said, Grice is a better all around back with better vision on top of having return experience. I also think that Oliver has a better chance of sticking on the practice squad than Grice does.
Without struggle, there is no progress.

Re: Grice Over Oliver? Really?

Oliver reminds me of MJ-D, Gore, Rice: a short, strong, shifty RB that rarely gets arm tackled.  He takes very short steps which makes him hard to take down by the ankles, unlike long striders.  If we don't keep both, then we are on the horns of an enema (ooops, dilemma).  A running team will poach Oliver, and a passing team will poach Grice.  I don't think either will clear waivers.  If a team signs them off waivers, they can then sign them to their own PS(after 3 games on the active roster).  Whom we keep will be predicated on our future plans concerning the "other three" RB's.  I suspect we keep Grice, though I would prefer Oliver--I like his smash-mouth style.
