WR and TE

WR and TE

Six spots open for WR and four for TE.

WR
Malcolm Floyd - locked
Keenan Allen - locked
Eddie Royal - locked
Seyi Ajirotutu - ???
Vincent Brown - ???
Brelen Chancellor
Torrence Allen
Mica Hatfield
Javontee Herndon
Dontrelle Inman
Tevin Reese

VB is out part of the preseason due to calf injury. If he is locked up and starts the season, then they is only one slot and Inman looks to be the lead candidate. If VB is either cut or out for a portion of the season, would the open up a second slot. If so, I would think it would be Reese. I am assuming that TuTu is a lock for the season. but is he?

TE
Antonio Gates - locked
Ladarius Green - locked
John Phillips - locked
Jake Byrne
Michael Flacco (1 rec for 18 yds vs Dallas)
David Johnson
Ryan Otten  (1 rec for 15 yds vs Dallas)

I assuming that Phillips is locked. That leaves one slot open. Flacco and Otten each made 1 reception. Did Byrne and Johnson play in game 1?

Re: WR and TE

Looked like David Johnson will open holes for our running game.  Again, similar to the running game, it is great that we have lots of competition at WR.  Floyd and Royal will get banged up during the season.  Not sound very good for VJ to make the team if he can't play.  I'd love to see both Inman and Reese step it up over the preseason.  Obviously Inman has shown great ability in the first preseason game.  Need consistency from him to make the team.

Re: WR and TE

Hey Ultra,
I think that David Johnson is an absolute lock to make the team.  He brings a toughness that we just don't have with any other TE, and IMO John Phillips is on the bubble, depending on whether there's a younger candidate that could replace him.  I think we might only carry 3 TE's if there are tough cuts to make.

I'm thinking Inman is a lock to make the team as well.

Reese needs to step up, and also work on his return skills (dropping too many).  I think we carry 6 with
Inman, Reese, and Tutu.  Brown hasn't done much for the Chargers even when healthy (It's been Tutu that has contributed CLUTCH plays when called on), and I think that if he can't get healthy, the team will try to keep him by adding him to the PUP list.

This way we don't lose Brown, and he's given a second chance to turn it all around.

Johnson was another smart P/U by the GM of the year!
A lock to make the team IMO!
He also can double as FB I believe?
Anyway HE CAN BLOCK!

Re: WR and TE

Couldn't  agree more about this. Johnson is going to be key in this offense, no doubt. That puts Phillips on the bubble. For some reason, I can see them carrying 7 WRs. I know it's a lot but here is the reasoning. 1. They say VB has looked great this offseason and his 2nd year in this O. 2. Tutu is too valuable to this team IMO. What he brings on ST and ability to come in and contribute off the bench is needed. 3. Reese will get swooped up if put on the PS.

Re: WR and TE

I agree with Yantha, David Johnson is a lock.

And I think we end up losing Reese, which is a shame because we spent a pick on him, but if he can't win a return job he's basically worthless this year.

Inman*

With my 5 man untouchables on the PS, the Reese situation wouldn't be a problem!

Re: WR and TE

I see them carrying 3 TE's and 6 WR's.

WR:

Allen, Floyd, Royal, Inman, Tutu, Reese.

I said it before the draft and in other posts IMO Brown doesn't make the active roster.  They can put him on IR or better yet trade him.  If Floyd doesn't finish the year or have anything less than a Pro Bowl season IMO he's gone next year.

The way it's going, it looks like Verrett will be on IR (able to return) at the start of the season.  IMO he's missed too much, i.e. all the OTAs, and now the first two weeks of TC.  The key will be next week.  If he doesn't play I don't see how he makes the active roster in September.  That said, it would then not allow them to put that same designation on Brown.

Both Inman and Tutu are better and more versatile than Brown.  They are taller and faster with good hands, and can run all the routes.  With Brown in routes 7-9 you are hoping for a coverage mistake.  If Brown is off the team, and Floyd goes down I look see them carrying Herndon on the PS and they can bring him up.  He doesn't have Reese's speed but he's not slow and looks farther along than Reese.

TEs:

Gates, Green, Johnson

Even though John Phillips carries a $1.3M dead money number that can be mitigated by a June 1 designation.  I think they would rather carry Reese for a year than John Phillips.

Re: WR and TE

Inman & Johnson are both ABSOLUTE LOCKS!!

The WR position will be interesting. 1 sport is up for grabs IMO... Either they stay patient with V. Brown or they keep Reese so nobody snags him. The other 5 Allen, Floyd, Royal, Inman, & Tutu makes the final cut...

Even DT will be interesting. Palepoi is outplaying Carrethers. Palepoi is a beast. Hope he makes the squd

IMO,

Floyd, Allen, Royal, Tutu, and Brown are locked.

Brelen Chancellor, Torrence Allen, and Mica Hatfield will either be releaseed or signed to the practice squad. I don't think these three survive the first cut.

The final spot will either go to Javontee Herndon, Dontrelle Inman, or Tevin Reese. I think these three will survive the first cut.

I actually thought Herndon was as advertised tonight, he caught a couple highly contested balls. (one that got taken away on a holding call).   Inman had a rough time of it, but I still think he has a good chance to make it.

It's going to be a tough call. Especially because they didn't let Herndon return kicks like I thought they would.

Re: WR and TE

I like having the luxury of carrying 4 TEs… Gates, Green Phillips and Johnson.  Since we don't have a FB, Johnson will serve in that role.  Flacco could make the Practice Squad.

Re: WR and TE

Gates and Green torching LB's and DB's with Johnson and Phillips blowing people up on blocks to help the running game...I like it! But like you said Bolt, carrying 4 would be a luxury considering they need help on the D-line.

Re: WR and TE

Ladarius Green played on eight of Philip Rivers' nine snaps in Friday night's preseason game against the Seahawks.
For the second week in a row, Green's usage was really encouraging. He played just about every first-team snap even though Antonio Gates was active, lined up in the slot three times and was not asked to pass block at all. Green finished with two catches for 20 yards on two targets (both after Rivers left the game), but that's not the point. When the 6'6/240 freak with 4.4 wheels gets used on every down and as a receiver, good things are going to happen. Green brings tremendous upside at the top of the TE2 ranks.

Re: WR and TE

This is the last year on Browns contract and he had been injured most of the time. I expect he will be on the PUP list or IR for the season. He could be gone if the new and current WR perform well.

1. Allen - locked
2. Floyd - locked
3. Royal - locked
4. Tutu - locked
5. Inman - believe he will be locked
6. Chancellor, Hatfield, Herndon, Reese, or Torrence (probably come down to Herndon or Reese for the final spot

PUP or IR: Brown
