If Dalton signs for $115 million, I wonder what Rivers is thinking with his paltry $93 million deal?

Dalton isn't half the QB Rivers is, it's just mind boggling that he would get a contract that is about 25% bigger than what Philip got.

And the Bengals are known to be cheap! Just thought I would share this story since it really is a head scratcher. I wonder if Rivers' agent is calling Spanos this morning? I would and I would send the Bengals/Bolts playoff game to him as evidence.

The deal is not excessive for a 4th year QB who's made the playoffs 3 years in a row, who threw 30+ TDs last year.

And consider that the cap is going to rise over the next few years, and at no point will his cap # rival what Philip Rivers is making this year. It's not a bad deal in this era of the NFL, compared to the crippling dread of entering the QB market.

What Syx said. This is a relatively reasonable deal by NFL standards.

Most things money-related in pro sports inflate faster than regular cost of living adjustments. Stadiums, salaries, concessions, parking. That probably doesn't trickle down to the security guard with his back to the field, but it definitely applies to player compensation. Hell, a guy like James Shields in MLB is going to be asking for $15 million-plus/year just for being a very good No. 2 guy with a 3.40 ERA.

Figure there might be a correction sometime, but as long as we're willing to spend $200 for a half-decent seat, it won't happen anytime soon.

Rivers had more guaranteed, too. And he's not one of those douches who tells his agent "make sure I get $1 more than another player at my position I don't like."

It's also important to remember these guys who have been signing extensions (Smith, Peterson, Dalton) are part of the infamous 2011 draft class, the first class of the new CBA that has REASONABLE rookie contracts. A lot of them think it's owed to them to get paid for their 4-5 years of good service.

Cameron Jordan, JJ Watt, Robert Quinn, AJ Green, Cam Newton, Von Miller......these guys are going to get astronomical contracts compared to what we're used to seeing the last 10 years.   Not only because what they've already done, but because the owners know the cap limit is going to rise rapidly over the next 6 years.

I wonder how long the Bengals will keep Dalton, if they don't make a strong push in the playoffs.

That's why I started this thread. Dalton at times looks shaky and also is lucky to have a receiver like AJ Green making him look good.

Yeah he keeps making it to the playoffs...and then laying an egg. There is a big knock on the Red Rocket that he can't really throw the deep ball well and he at times has really accuracy issues....so for me he is still unproven, despite helping his team make the playoffs over the past few years. If he tanks another year or two if/when the team makes the playoffs, like he has already over the past many years, I would think it would be time to go in another direction. Fans have been patient but how patient can you be if the same QB bombs under pressure for 4-5 seasons in a row? I don't know...that's a lot of money to pay for that kind of production. We shall see...
