NFL expansion to Canada

NFL expansion to Canada

Just wondering...  There is a bid for the Buffalo Bills that will ultimately lead the team to be moved to Toronto (despite Bon Jovi's claims....  that's the plan...).

Just curious what Americans think about a team being in Canada.

I know what Western New Yorkers think but theres some bias there.

Re: NFL expansion to Canada

I have a lot of bias on this, so of course the first one commenting isn't what you're looking for Yantha.

It just doesn't "feel right" with what Jim Kelly is going through even though I admit that should have no factor in decision making.

The only pro games I've been to are Bills games (been 5 or 6 times now) and hosted by friends of mine who are huge Buffalo Bills fans. The fan support at the stadium has always been an awesome experience.

I know how much they'd hate seeing the team move and that along with the history and legacy makes me hope they remain in Buffalo.

If I take out the personal bias I have then I would be okay with a move to say... Toronto, even though that might hurt Bills fans more with the team moving so close, I'm not sure how they feel about that. I would love to visit Toronto myself (never been over the boarder there, only been to Montreal) and watch a pro team there. You mentioned EXPANSION though in the title and ultimately that would be my hope, that the NFL could expand and have a team in Buffalo and a team in Toronto. If it didn't dilute the fan base too much it would create quite the rivalry.

Re: NFL expansion to Canada

Its only natural to want to grow the game. My only issue with a team in Canada is that it should be a brand new expansion team IMO.

Let that new team have and begin its own history in the NFL. Now I know plenty including our beloved Bolts started off in other Amercian cities and states but we talking about never before entered territory here. Literally.

The Bills especially have a very rich history in Buffalo and IMHO it would be a very sad day to see the Bills elsewhere.

Same goes for the said team they want to have in London. I know there was some buzz about maybe Mexico city being another place of interest.
It's not about how many times you get knocked down.  It's whether or not you are willing to get back up.

No expansion.

The league is perfect the way it's set up right now, a 33rd team would screw **** up. They'd either have to scramble the divisions again (which would suck) or just put a 5th team in AFCN or NFCN (which would be stupid.)

I'd rather see them move of one of the Florida teams, I know all 3 struggle mightily with attendance, especially Jacksonville.

I think that's where the London team comes in. But I defnitely agree with your point there Syx.

Just speaking in general that if they were to expand that I would prefer that team to not come from a pre-exsisting organization.

Especially because that team would truly be their team with new begininngs and its own history.

Re: NFL expansion to Canada

I've been wanting a Toronto team for over a decade now.  I grew up a Bills fan mainly because I grew up in a "pre-cable" era with only 7 channels to watch on television (including a western NY channel).

I've been a Charger fan since Flutie started there (I jumped from Bills to Chargers.... and haven't looked back).

Buuuuut, although I'll remain a Charger fan for life, part of me would still love a local Toronto team that I could buy season tickets to and bring my Son regularly...

I'm torn with the Bills...  I want a team badly, but I also know that if the Bills left WNY, it would really hurt the community there.  This is the closest I've gotten to getting a Toronto team, and it might not happen in my lifetime, so it's tough..

I'd prefer a Florida team as well, or full on expansion, but that seems a loooooongshot right now.

LONDON?banghead That's a different topic entirely, and 100x worse than just adding a team in Canada.  Putting a team in London would be a logistical nightmare for the league and every team that has to travel to and from. They would have the hugest home field advantage in history especially against west coast teams, and the biggest road disadvantage in history, you want to talk about jet lag?

Right now it's just not realistic IMO, I'd sooner see a team in the corrupt pit that is Mexico City.

I hope the Chargers never travel to London if it costs us a Home Game. Oh my stance on the NFL in London?

Re: NFL expansion to Canada

I think Canada is the next logical place to expand outside of the U.S.  This is what they did with baseball and basketball.  Makes sense to have a new franchise there.  Doesn't make sense to expand into Europe.  However, I still think that the NFL needs to get a team in the L.A. market first, preferably a new franchise.

I've heard rumours that the Jags, and Rams are two teams that could also be moved.

It would be interesting to see the Jags move.  I wouldn't feel any sense of guilt if the Jags moved to Toronto.  The Jags aren't exactly entrenched in the Jacksonville community like the Bills are.

Re: NFL expansion to Canada

Lot's of moving parts:
- expansion vs. survival move (OK, billionaire survival isn't exactly a food stamp decision, but still -)
- Canada vs. Europe vs. Mexico vs. LA
- stadium funding/upgrading issues (public funding vs. billionaire's club funding)
- scheduling impact of expansion (time zones/start times/jet lag/division structures/schedules/...)
- deflation of talent available (do you want to cheer the 34th best QB?)
- legal issues - does NFL's "special" status translate to other countries?
- long abused fans who went in hock to build a now insufficient stadium (never mind, to hell with them)

I just don't get Bon Jovi's interest in moving into Toronto, a Jersey Boy! I just wonder if the CFL and NFL already have some non-competition thing agreed upon?

I think it's because Bon Jovi's partners on the bid are Canadian residents.  I think the partners have an affiliation with the Maple Leafs IIRC.
Expand CFB playoffs to 8 teams!

When the topic of global expansion comes up, do any of you other "old timers" have images of Rollerball in your heads, like I do?  And I'm referring to the original classic, of course.
