Clary Agrees to Pay Cut!

Clary Agrees to Pay Cut!

We've been talking about this all summer, one of two things had to happen, well , ONE did!

Jeromey Clary
- T - Chargers

Injured Chargers RG Jeromey Clary (hip, PUP) has agreed to a $2.95 million pay cut.

Recovering from hip and shoulder operations, Clary has slashed his salary from $4.55 million to $1.6 million, likely saving his roster spot. Clary is shaping up as a candidate to spend the first six games of the season on reserve/PUP, leaving third-rounder Chris Watt in the driver's seat at right guard.

Hey Guys, play the first half like its the second half!

Re: Clary Agrees to Pay Cut!

I would say good for Clary for being a team player, but in reality he had no choice.

A) He was one of the worst guards in the NFL last year.
B) He is massively overpaid, so if released nobody would have claimed him anyway.
C) If unclaimed it's highly unlikely anyone would sign him because he's INJURED. As in start the season on the PUP injured, as in can't even show up in somebody's camp to learn the scheme.

I hear he's a good guy so I don't mean to make it sound like I'm ripping him for making the best decision for himself, I'm actually ripping the organization for taking so long on a player that really has little or no on field value.

The pay cut was coming.  I understand that the Chargers like Clary.  He can be a suitable back-up as there will be injuries on the line.

Re: Clary Agrees to Pay Cut!

He's actually getting paid what he's worth! Fair is fair, he knows our system, and can play a backup role, now if another vet is available with a similar skill set at around the same price?

His new salary is fully guaranteed.  Not sure if any was guaranteed until he reworked the contract.  It also opened up almost 3 million in cap space.

What it does between him and letting English go is some Breathing room for the CAP. TT has to be one of the
brightest up and coming GM's in the NFL, heck I wouldn't be surprised if there isn't a move coming soon because
of the newly freed up monies!

Is there anyone worth signing at the moment with the extra space?  Or is TT preparing for other league cuts just in case someone becomes availablebiggrin  Either way, I like the way he is working it.

Re: Clary Agrees to Pay Cut!

Clary is the ultimate TEAM player, work ethic, humility, willingness to mentor rookies who are competing for his job, nice guy, the list goes on.  Unfortunately his production doesn't equal those attributes.  He does have one quality that stands out:  experience in the offensive scheme, which takes time for  rookies to assimilate.  This is not about Clary agreeing to a cut, rather it is about TT, and the methodical way he is building this team!!  No knee jerk reactionary moves, just one small piece at a time in order of priorities, giving each situation time to analyze before making a decision.  English and Mouton were given every chance to produce, Clary is given the same, and if he makes the team even if he doesn't start, he will be a proven backup with scheme knowledge.  Kudos to TT-- AGAIN!

Awesome!  I agree with the sentiment though that Clary is a TEAM guy, and hard worker.  His talent just doesn't line up with his paycheque, and that's finally been rectified.

So…..  this frees up some FA money!

Re: Clary Agrees to Pay Cut!

Looks like about $4.7M available, which isn't a great deal - we are still carrying about $13.8M in dead money this year. I would be surprised to see any near term signings. I think TT will wait until the final cuts prior to the season in order to see what his injury situation is and if necessary what is available on the market. It would be good to have some pocket change during the year to be able to respond to injuries. I would also not be surprised to see some more Danny Woodhead type contract extensions for guys who they want to keep for a year or two past their current contract at a decent price.

Re: Clary Agrees to Pay Cut!

Absolute stand up job by both sides. Tommy clears space and rewards JC for his lunch pail work etic. And while hedidnt have much choice, Clary still had to agree to taking the pay cut.

You know that Clary's not the type of person to do so but he could have just easily said no he's not going to take the pay cut. Release me and take your cap hit but he didn't.

And to give him a guaranteed deal? Awesome job all around.
It's not about how many times you get knocked down.  It's whether or not you are willing to get back up.

Re: Clary Agrees to Pay Cut!

Smart.  I agree this would be the best course.  I just scoured the FA list, and there aren't' any players I'd be interested in anyways.

I'd like to see us extend the following players that are in contract years:
1.  Ryan Mathews
2.  Seyi Ajirotutu
3.  Malcolm Floyd
4.  Eddie Royal
5.  King Dunlap
6.  Nick Hardwick
7.  Dwight Freeney

Some might retire….  including Freeney, Floyd, Hardwick, maybe even Royal, but I'd like to squeeze one more season….

What about Brandon Flowers?  Did he sign a multi-year contract or just one season??

Anything for you Doc!

Chargers agreed to terms with CB Brandon Flowers on a one-year contract.
The deal is worth "up to" $5 million and contains $3 million in total guarantees.

Re: Clary Agrees to Pay Cut!

All this does is guarantee Clary is on the team for at least another 2 maybe 3 years.  It makes cutting him much more difficult during that time.  All this media crap is all smoke and mirrors guys.  It's all bogus accounting to make something look better than it is and to justify keeping on the roster a marginal starter.

Had he been released with a June 1 designation they would have saved more than $2.9M this year.

So all they did was take what would have been his June 1 pro-ration dead money and use that as the new base and extended his contract with far more guaranteed money.  Bottomline is the Chargers actually increased their guaranteed money to Clary guaranteeing him a roster spot this year and next and possibily in 2016 as well dependent upon the terms.

What this means is that a promising young player won't make the team so they can keep a marginal veteran.

So, you don't think this might be, at least in part, a PR move by Telesco to the fan base that mediocrity will no longer be tolerated? Why so negative regarding so many things, brother?
