Best 2nd year as a starter by offensive player?

Best 2nd year as a starter by offensive player?

I include Nick Foles here because 2013 was his first year as a starter.  I believe all the players listed did indeed start for at least part of the 2013 season.  They certainly all were huge contributors in 2013.  The reason this idea came up was because of all the talk this offseason about how teams will be "ready for" Keenan Allen this season (as if they just play checkers for 6 days between games during the season rolleyes), so he'll "supposedly" have to do a completely different set of things this year.  So it got me thinking about how that must be "true" of all the other 2nd year starters, as well.  It sounded like a fun topic for offseason discussion.

So here we go.  What say you all?

To start things off, I picked Fluke, because

1. He was better than most people say he was last year as a rookie, even though most say he was pretty good, and

2. He has the kind of inner drive to be the best that, combined with his rare physical attributes, I believe will make him one of the best linemen in this league, and soon.  Will it be this year?  I don't know, but I won't be surprised if it is.

This begs the question--the BEST 2nd year, or the MOST improved 2nd year?  I think Foles because he's in the position to flourish, and of course QB's get more press.

Of course, as we've talked about with other players recently, a person's choice depends on the bases that person uses for making his/her determination, which is the first step before making one's analyses of the players' performances.  But then, that's a big reason why all these discussions are so much fun - getting to see things from different perspectives wink.

Wow, that's definitely going out on a limb, vise, especially considering that Te'o plays defense.  And actually, I don't think he qualifies for this discussion, since he doesn't have a first season as a starter on offense.  Sorry wink.

Re: Best 2nd year as a starter by offensive player?

I don't think the jump for Fluker will be all that dramatic.  He will clean up some of his rookie issues in technique and be able to play faster and more consistent.  But he will always be vulnerable to a strong fast outside pass rush.  His forte will be in the run game as it has always been. That said he continues to sound more like an OG than a OT.

Allen will get more attention this year, but he will also have more support and he like all rookies will make a big jump in his second year.  As much as anything he needs to show consistency and duplicate his rookie season which in essence would be building off that year.  Statistically he should be better simply because he will be the starter from day one. But in reality on a per game basis how much better can he be?  He just needs to be more consistent in his game.

Picked Fluker.

Only because we had so much success late last year with ground and pound, and we add Malcom Floyd to the mix, and we'll probably see more Ladarius Green...I don't see Allen having a tremendous jump forward without a few injuries.

Te'o absolutely could rebound if he's healthy, but he's still laboring on that foot I hear.

I must say I'm quite a bit surprised that there aren't any votes for any of the non-Chargers on the list.  I know a lot of people have a difficult time judging offensive linemen, but I would expect some votes for guys like Lacy, Foles and Bernard.  Oh well noidea.

Lacy had a pretty damn good 1st year already, so for his 2nd to top it would be Really good, maybe 88, we just like

It was as good a rookie class as any in the league last year, if not the outright best one, that is true.  But I'm still surprised wink.

I think Keenan Allen will have a repeat year.  He and Phillip have a really good rapport between themselves and the offensive will have more collaboration.

Just looking over some video of Allen from the Scond Denver game last year, it is stupid for a Rookie to have that much Confidence! His second year could be Amazing with the expanded role of Green, and hopefully a return of Flyod.

Re: Best 2nd year as a starter by offensive player?

Its hard not to pick K. Allen. With him saying that he has gotten faster and able to get in and out of breaks quicker, will be a nightmare for DBs. Fluker is just bound a determined to be the best at his position. I see both of these guys improving on from what they started. Sooooooo excited to see what this team can do this coming season.
Without struggle, there is no progress.
