Round by Round: Best Chargers Picks of the Last 10 Years

NFL Draft Review: Gone but not Forgotten

In a couple weeks fans will get a first-hand look at the team Tom Telesco has built. But for all the turnover that has taken place, more than half of this year's final roster will consist of players drafted by A.J. Smith. With that in mind, here is a look back at the best draft picks made by Telesco's predecessor. Read More...

It's July and training camp is still a couple weeks out, so this article is more about starting an interesting discussion than anything else. I'd love to know who you would rank as A.J. Smith's best picks, using this same round-by-round format. Sound off right here!

Now for the AJ Hall of Shame...

1st... Buster Davis
2nd...traded previous year for Jacob Hester
3rd...Courtney Van Buren (9 career games)
4th...Gartrell Johnson (79 career rushing yards)
5th...Jonathan Crompton (in CFL)
6th...Kurt Smith (drafted for no purpose, never had a chance to beat Kaeding, never played a single NFL game)
7th...Dedrick Epps (Another wasted pick, stupid at the time, stupider now)

Nice article Mike.

I'll add that in round 4, BURNER TURNER could be a close second.  Phillips wins because he stuck with the team longer for sure, but Turner was a great find in the 4th.

Finally, I'll add that Smith did a great job finding some talent in the UDFA!

GATES wins that battle, but Dielman and Floyd are in there too!

As slow as it is I still refuse to talk about that loser.

Moving on!

Re: Round by Round: Best Chargers Picks of the Last 10 Years

Great work, as usual, Mike.  You covered pretty much everyone who could be considered, but one.  And he's my choice - for now - in the first round.

Shawne Merriman

Like you, though, as long as he has at least 2 more seasons equal to or better than last year, I believe Mr. Liuget will eventually take that crown.  But right now, NOBODY drafted by AJ in the first round has done as much as Merriman did in those special first 3 seasons of his (given the Rivers "technicality" you mentioned, of course).  There simply is no denying it.

Another young pup, given time, may end up taking his round's crown, and that is Kendall Reyes.  But he could be truly great, and still not win it, given the guy he has to beat in Weddle.

And while I won't quibble with Phillips in round 4, I would have given it to Sproles.  But that choice is so close to me, I think either one is equally valid.

Also, I have to give the 7th round pick to Shane Olivea.  Another guy whose time was cut short by injury, and the subsequent problems resulting from it, you still cannot give it to anyone else, when Olivea started from day one as a rookie - AS A 7TH ROUND PICK! (that just doesn't happen in this league anymore) - and stayed there for over 3 seasons, until the aforementioned injury+ did him in.  And that was also as a part of one of the greatest seasons (2006) by an offensive line in NFL history.  Sorry, being a "Great Guy" backup for more years doesn't trump what Olivea did, just because Olivea's was for a shorter period of time.

Weddle over VJ? Agreed but you're gonna get push back from it on this board. popcorn2.gif

No push back here. Both great picks.

It was the handling of VJ that did the damage. If our former GM wasn't so toxic we could have VJ at No. 1 WR going into this season. This is all re-tread but I had to jab back. wink
