Nice!! Great job TT... He does not need to be a suoer stud to help out. His leadership & experience will pay off for the younger guys to watch & learn. Soak up all the knowlwde they can while he's there.

Well done TT and welcome aboard Dwight!! Hopefully they didn't have to break the bank to sign him and just maybe can still swing a deal to go get Max Starks.

Re: Dwight Freeney visiting SD on Wednesday

It's being reported that Freeney's contract with incentives is a 2-year deal that could be worth $13.5 million.

YIKES! Crazy_349.gif

Supposedly this is how it breaks down:

Freeney’s two-year contract with the Chargers carries a base value of $8.75 million.

The deal pays $5.25 million in 2013, via a $3.25 million signing bonus, $1.5 million in guaranteed base salary, and a $500,000 roster bonus tied to Freeney’s presence on the weekly 46-man roster. (It works out to $31,250 per game.)

Freeney is due to earn $3.5 million in 2014, $500,000 of which is linked to weekly roster bonuses.

The contract carries a maximum value of $13.35 million, with $4.6 million tied exclusively to sacks.

Chargers Agree to Terms with Dwight Freeney

The Chargers replaced Melvin Ingram (torn ACL) with the best pass rusher on the market and one of the most accomplished sack artists of all time, agreeing to terms on a two-year deal with Dwight Freeney. The spin-move sensei has averaged better than 10.5 sacks per 16 games played over the course of his 11-year career. Read More...

It was a move born out of desperation, but there is nothing wrong with that. The addition of Danario Alexander last season was a desperation move and that turned out pretty well.

Freeney does not have to be a Pro Bowler for this to be a great signing. If he can get five or six sacks, draw some attention away from San Diego's other pass rushers and help teach the young guys a thing or two along the way, this deal will be a home run.

2014 could be fun if  Freeney, Keiser, and Te'o produce and Ingram is added back into the mix. It'll be like adding a #1 (Ingram) on D.

Great to hear that he signed. The big question is, is there enough cap room left to sign Starks?

My exact thoughts...I think they can definitely find the money. Now it's just a waiting game.

Like I said before I would have been surprised if one of the two wasn't signed by Friday night....I was pretty close. I think the door to get Starks done is the beginning of the week, if not....the odds start to reduce dramatically because I would think that he's looking to probably play somewhere else.

HUGE! He may not be 25 anymore but he is a good football player that will be a significant addition!

Melvin's potential turned into Freeney's experience. Pretty equal trade.

What will happen to some of the higher priced players on the roster?

The good thing is he's releasable next year if it doesn't work out, but there is still potential dead money that wouldn't have been there had we signed Shaun Phillips for his 1yr/1M deal.

From the UT article: Freeney's 34 hurries and nine hits on the quarterback would have paced San Diego in 2012. I'll take that!!

Don't we have some cap money coming free June 1st from the Gaither release? Wonder if Starks would wait that long to sign.

I do like the signing as well. The thing I really like though is the veteran leadership him and JJ will instill on this young D for the next couple years.

Yeah we have around 3 million in cap space coming June 1st from spreading Gaither's cap hit over the next 2 years instead of 1. Then they can hopefully sign Max Starks.

Signing Freeney is just like getting another Ingram. Imagine that? One player goes down and then another one exactly like him pops right back up. Go figure?

No one is concerned about his injury and age?

Sounds nice to have him, but I wonder. Maybe its just me.

he doesn't neccesarily have to get 10 sacks to be effective. IF he can still get QB hurries on 3rd downs, that will help out immensely. Anything to get the team off the field on 3rd down...

No Light, it's not just you...I think it's safe to say "everyone" is concerned about his age. But given our situation, this is the absolute best signing that we could have hoped for. So, I give the Chargers credit for taking that chance on Freeney.......because up until now, it didn't seem like this team was willing to take any chances on elite free agent talent.

Injury wise I believe Freeney had a high ankle sprain at the beginning of last season....it lingered as high ankle sprains tend to do when you play on them... but eventually he started to turn it on toward the end of the year. Regardless, I think he's had sufficient time to recover and the injury itself doesn't concern me so much as the age factor....which likely makes him more prone to other injuries.

He's definitely a big name. It does sound pretty cool to have him. But I was also happy when we signed Bob Sanders.....disbelief

If he pans out, wow, we might have a pass rush again. eek
