KC Franchise Albert Good or Bad?

KC Franchise Albert Good or Bad?

I believe Acee tweeted the Chargers had interest in Albert at the combine. I was hoping that we would sign Albert to be our LT, which would really give TT the chance to draft BPA. With KC tagging Big Albert that could lead them to draft something else besides LT. Now its possible that a better LT prospect slides our way. I had feared Johnson along with Joeckel and Fisher would go in the top 10. Now maybe we have a chance a getting our LT for the future.

This is very interesting.  Can someone find out what the Franchise Tag rule is if a team tags a guy they end up moving to a new position?  Does the guy get the average top 5 salary at his old position, or his new position?

Because I think it is highly likely that if it's his new position, the Chiefs will move Albert somewhere else along the line, and still draft Fisher or Joeckel 1st overall.  If, however, they have to pay him the top 5 average at his old position of left tackle, that makes it more difficult for them to still draft a left tackle 1st overall.  Not impossible, no, but more difficult.

He was tagged as an OT and will get OT money regardless of where he ends up playing.

I'd say this is bad AND good.

Albert is a good left tackle and KC kept him...  so that's bad.

BUT, they might pass on OT in the draft, which is good for the Chargers.

RE: KC Franchise Albert Good or Bad?

Yeah I'm mixed.

Good: Because it means all 3 OTs slide down the draft board a little...even though it may still not be enough to guarantee one.

Bad: Because Albert was a legitimate long term LT option that would have opened up our entire draft. At the very least we could have moved him to RT or OG in the future to finish out his contract if he started slowing down.

Does that mean there is no difference between left tackle and right tackle when it comes to determining his salary?  Is it the top 5 average of all tackles (regardless of side), or the top 5 average of just left (or right) tackles?

Chiefs just released RT Eric Winston.

Hmmm? OT with the first pick now? I think the handwriting is now on the wall.

Don't jump to conclusions, I think they always felt Donald Stephenson was a better fit for Andy Reid's scheme.  And cutting Winston provides some cap relief.

BTW Chief fans are pissed about this move.

Good info! Question for you...if KC fans are pissed about Winston's cut, would that mean they think he was good and could SD be interested?

He is currently and was a better pickup than Clary for sure, who doesn't really even make sense as a backup player even if he took a restructured contract which he likely won't do

They should go after Demetress Bell for depth. He was injured all last year and now his old Oline coach is here. Just a thought.
Did the Chiefs run a zone scheme with the Oline? I know the Texans did when Winston was there. I would still love it if they picked this guy up. I do believe the Chiefs go with a OT with the 1st pick.

I'm wondering if we could afford Winston and Vollmer??  I suppose neither can play LT?  Then you put Clary and Gaither to backup assuming they make the roster?

Would be cool as you could then get the stud Guard and Jones and not sweat Vasquez leaving.

Vollmer played LT for the Pats for a little while in place of injured Matt Light.  Vollmer eventually became the starting RT because Light was still on the roster.  I have no doubt that Vollmer can still be a solid LT.  I wouldn't mind it if he were brought in for that reason.
