NUTS & BOLTS Draft 2013

Early observations in the Draft Process:

1.  No one knows what Tommy T. will do in the drivers seat as GM.  If he is a Best Available Player guy, the draft could get really different.  Will he move up and down on the Draft Board, who the heck knows?  If he keeps stockpiling picks by trading back several times, we know he is doing an overhaul of the team.  That indicates contrary to what he is saying... he knows our team is average at best.  He could drop back twice to pick 22 and then finally grab our guy.  Achieving several more picks for depth.  Other than QB position, we are rebuilding a new team with a new image.  We need a RB, we need a dominant shutdown Corner, we need a quality pass rusher x two, we need a No. 1 speed impact WR-  or the very least an Anquan Boldin type of guy.  AJ left the cupboard bare in terms of depth, he gambled on too many projects....  Gaither, Larry English, Bob Saunders, and so forth.  He really did try to maintain a constant talent flow.  Some things backfired.   Our cap no. is not real good.

2.  Free Agency, will Tommy T.  be more active on the market.  We have a bad cap w/heavy salaries on a chosen few....  Gaither, Gates, Rivers, Clary , Weddle, Matthews, a lot of $$$$ is tied up in these guys.  We could make one big splash signing , but then we lose depth by another guy w/a big contract.  No more dough to sign 3 or 4 more guys.

3.  I think RB Ryan Matthews is through, after 2 collar bone fractures.  I can't see him being a 25 carry guy.  His role will have to be as a backup, spot player, I am still rooting for this guy, thought AJ made a great pick with him.  I think the injuries have taken their toll.  Now we need a cow bell back, bigger to grind it out.  Rashard Mendenhall anyone?

4.  This is a MEAT & POTATOES Draft..   Linemen and more linemen abound this year.  I did get Chance Warmacks arm measurements finally.  Awesome that he measured at 34 1/2 length, or so.  No short arm problem for being under 6 foot 3 inches in height.  Now I am more sold on him for a fall back position at No. 11 , if there is a Tackle run in front of us.

5.  I am in favor of rebuilding the OL since there are so many good prospects thru Round 4.  We go to a ball control type of Offense.  I would even trade a future No. 1 pick and mortgage the future for another lineman.  We need OL help instead of an impact WR early in the draft.  We need three OL from this draft to help out.

6.  A confusing picture at RB , they all ran slow at the combine.  They all are Tiki Barber, Warrick Dunn, type of backs.  Only Lacey of Bama, Montee Ball, Stepfan Taylor, Christine Michael, Knile Davis, LaVeon Bell,  look built to take a pounding.

7.  This draft is solid at SS position, an area we need again due to injury of Brandon Taylor.

8.  I would rent Chris Cooley for one year , same with NT Casey Hampton.

9.  For all the DBs that AJ drafted over the years, all we have now is Weddle & Cason who needs to be resigned.  That seemed to be his achilles heel as GM.  Jammer has lost a step, we can't move him to FS since Weddle is there already, he is to small to move to SS.  Our nickel corners are so so back there.

10.  Less than two months till the draft.  Things change w/prospects each few weeks.  Look at MLB Manti Te'o who now is in Round Two.  Margus Hunt who now moves up two rounds.  I can even see Margus Hunt as a 49 er with the Chiefs pick in Round Two.  The rich get richer, Harbaugh will be stoked to have Margus Hunt line up opposite Aldon Smith.

Re: NUTS & BOLTS Draft 2013

If I worked for a Pro Ball Club, these are the Pro Days I would love to attend due to several prospects at one school:

UCLA   ,   San Jose ST (a number of Day 3 prospects) , Aztec Campus (check out our local guys) ,  Fresno ST.

Moving out of California --  Oregon ,  Wisconsin ,  Ohio ST , Texas A & M , Oklahoma  ,  Bama Tide , several campus visits in the state of Mississippi , Florida ST , Virginia Tech , Missouri , Georgia , LSU to meet up with AJ Smith , on to the Carolinas , then finally ,   U Conn.  I believe these campuses will have a number of Pro personnel & scouts there.  A number of GMs will hit Georgia and Bama Tide workouts.

This is a pretty deep draft , however the skill position guys are lacking in blue chippers.  There are some decent receivers , just no Julio Jones or Larry Fitzgerald types.  Mega Tron wideouts aren't in this class.  There are Anquan Boldin , Rickey Proehl , Brandon Stokley types though.

The clubs who got great blue chippers last year at the skill positions, have got it made this year for the draft.  They can draft players to complement Trent Richardson , my guy QB Russell Wilson , RG III , Andrew Luck , Luke Kuechly.

Per usual , injuries , medical history , slow 40 times , off field issues , will tweak the draft.

Re: NUTS & BOLTS Draft 2013

                                     RUNNING AMOK WITH THE CHARGERS

RD ONE    Eric Fisher   Left Tackle    Cent Mich ...........  I would take him due to more starts.  If Gone:  Lane Johnson Oklahoma

RD TWO   Jamar Taylor   Corner       Boise ST  ............. Top Corner prospect is needed.

RD THREE  Stepfan Taylor  RB          Stanford ............. Good all around back, retest 40 time.

RD FOUR   Brian Winters Guard         Kent ST ...........  love his aggression on run blocking.

RD FIVE    Ricky Wagner Right Tackle Wisconsin .........  not flashy , gets the job done.

RD SIX     Josh Johnson  Corner        Purdue ............ will tackle , smart defender.

RD SEVEN Cooper Taylor Strong Safety Richmond ......  rare size sleeper, @ Shrine game.

A TAYLOR made draft for the Bolts..........  Pass Rushers would have to come from free agency.

Re: NUTS & BOLTS Draft 2013

Players I would pass up in Round One this year:

Jarvis Jones  LB       due to medical reasons, cervical neck stenosis , prone to stingers, shortened career.

John Jenkins NT    conditioning, fluctuating weight problem.

Tavon Austin WR   under 5 feet 9 inches , restricted to slot role.  Made this mistake w/Sinorice Moss who had limited career, younger bro. of Santana Moss.  You are getting an expensive kick returner.

Manti Te'o  MLB   lack of sustained speed for coverage skills, saga with his imaginary friend.

Ziggy Ansah  DE/LB   too raw skilled for the money , why develop him for another team when contract elapses.  Older, limited background playing football.  It may take him awhile to fit in a 3-4 backer scheme.  Would take him in Round Two.

Alec Ogletree OLB   past team suspension is a concern , I believe he had a recent alcohol related incident.

Re: NUTS & BOLTS Draft 2013

The following are players the Bolts have shown interest in so far:

Ezekiel “Ziggy” Ansah DE, BYU: Chargers

   Andre Ellington RB, Clemson: Chargers

   Jonathan Franklin RB, UCLA:  Chargers

   Zaviar Gooden OLB, Missouri: Chargers

   Mychal Rivera TE, Tennessee: Chargers

Not a long list , maybe Tommy T. plays it close to the vest; guarding his interest in certain players.  Above reported by 85% sports dot com.

Too high for Stepfan Taylor, I would take Ball or Ellington or just go best pass rusher available at that point.

But I like this mock a lot, Cooper Taylor is a smart pick in the 7th, and I am sky high on Jamar Taylor who I had hoped to get with our 3rd a couple months ago...now he may slip into the 1st round.

Jamar Taylor is going to be a playmaker IMO, he plays with swagger and intelligence its rare to see a player have both. The guys I would like to see in the 6th and 7th round are SS Earl Wolff and ILB Vince Williams, both were the hard hitting leaders of their respective defenses and played with extreme aggression, that would be the perfect complement to Weedle and Butler.
Mock Draft
1)L.Johnson/J.Cooper
2)J.Taylor/D.Hopkins
3)A.Ellington/R.Alford
4)D.Quessenberry
5)B.Mcgee/TJ.Barnes
6)J.Boyce/E.Wolff
7)V.Williams/R.Rouse
UFA)S.Maponga/N.Robey/J.Francis

I take Lane Johnson no questions asked.  He has the most upside physically of any LT in this class, and he fits our biggest need.

Plus Cam Thomas isn't awful, he's a solid NT.

Styx I agree with everything you wrote, but do you really think Cam is the answer at DT? I just haven't heard his name enough, and would think by now he would have made more of an impact. What's your thoughts on his 2013 season? Thanks!

Well as most NTs are doubled constantly you don't usually hear their name called, they're not stat hogs.  I think Cam was very very solid in 2012, as is evidence by our top 10 rushing defense, and I really want to see Franklin brought back as well.

My thoughts on the 2013 season?  If we can't block on the edges, its over already.  And #2 is to replace Shaun Phillips...not Vasquez, Phillips, because Johnson offers nothing in the pass rush game and that will allow teams to swallow Ingram with double teams and pick us apart.

I would also take Offensive Tackle Lane Johnson over the Star.  If he has cardiomyopathy / heart disease , or cardiomegaly (enlarged heart) , this is a dangerous condition w/competitive sports.  40% function of the left ventricle (pumping chamber) is really scary.  According to one report out of the Combines.  If he simply needs medication , then that is another matter.  Digoxen , or similar med to strengthen the contractions of the heart might work.  I am no doctor but was a military medic/corpsman.  If he is OK on a medication regime , I would take him in Round Two or so.  Have no idea what the medical reports are.

Re: NUTS & BOLTS Draft 2013

I have had my friends in the Shadow Warrior community bug Tommy T. residence , and do 24 hour watch.   Phones are tapped under the Patriot Act.

The Rumor, Chargers may make a play for Tackle Ryan Clady, sign him to an offer sheet if they feel they can't get a quality Left Tackle.  The very worst , the Broncs are toast , their off season free agent plans in ruins.  They would take a big hit cap wise.  Should they retain him and match the contract.

The best conditions , we have a 26 year old , Pro Bowl Left Tackle .  We do lose both Number Ones which would ruin a lot of Charger Draft parties.

I don't know if anyone else has posted this , I don't have the luxury of time anymore to read a lot of columns.

Re: NUTS & BOLTS Draft 2013

If our pool of players are gone at pick No. 11 , every top OL gone including OG Chance Warmack.  JERRY JONES would be the ideal trading partner.  Why you ask:

  1.  He loves to see himself on TV during any NFL function.

  2.  He loves to make a splash on Draft Day and have everyone talking Cowboys.

  3.  He is very impatient , and won't let the talent drift to him.

  4.  A history of trading up of course.  If there is a run on pass rushers which I think will happen along with a DT run in the first 10 picks; I believe he will deal up again to get a top defender on their draft board.

This is very possible. We could definitely trade with Jerry Jones. He is predictably impatient.

Personally I would try and find a way to trade with the Rams for their 2 first round picks, since it's possible that the three OT prospects (Joeckel, Fisher, and Johnson)  and two OG prospects (Warmack and Cooper) will all be gone at 11.:

They get our first round pick, we trade spots for the second round pick, we give them our third round pick and give them Gaither, ha, ha. Joking of course but something similar....How about throwing in Clary to sweeten the deal?

I'm high on Jamar Taylor too, Barrett Jones and Terron Armstead. Jones can play any of the positions on the O-line LT, LG or Center.

Trade down could help us net the overall best players we need.

Re: NUTS & BOLTS Draft 2013

Pancholin, I didn't think about a trade w/the Rams for both top picks.  Good idea, good call.

I also like Barrett Jones , and Terron Armstead is an interesting small school player.  I think Gaither will be given every chance to prove himself.  He won't be released unless we trade w/the Rams and pick up both DJ Fluker & Terron Armstead with their picks some how.  I don't really know where Armstead lands at this point in Round 1-2.  We would still need to sign a vet left tackle or trade for one.  I dont think Terron could start at Left Tackle right away.  We might be able to start him at Guard initially , like the Ravens did with Jonathan Ogden a few years back.  Following year , he move to Left Tackle.

No way.rolleyes  The Rams will keep those picks for the same reason that every team in the top 15 wants them.  There is no one player in this draft worth trading those picks for, not even to  #1.

Re: NUTS & BOLTS Draft 2013

None of the experts seem to think arthur brown could play inside linebacker in the 3-4 but I think he could. Not sure why hes labeled as strictly a 4-3 olb when hes nearly identical in size to donald butler. I think his style of play is also extremely similar to butler's. If hes there for us in round 2 id love to see us grab him.
