Charles Woodson Released!
Wow! Why did Green Bay cut him? Hmmm....Could he be a great addition for the Chargers secondary for a year or two? He broke his collarbone this past season but I thought he really had maintained a top level of play. Any thoughts about trying to pick him up? The Rotoworld report on his release states that Woodson was to make $9 million this coming year and that he wasn't playing at a high level before he got injured...I thought he was? Has he lost a step? I still think he has gas left in the tank. http://www.rotoworld.com/player/nfl/840/charles-wo odson

Re: Charles Woodson Released!
Same exact issue as it's been in recent years for the Bolts. The guy could get injured and be lost at any moment, but if he's not, it could pay off.
So do the Bolts keep taking this exact same bet? If so, does this one finally pay off?
I guess I'm wondering when they'll finally just solve the problem the right way.

Re: Charles Woodson Released!
I'd welcome Woodson in place of Jammer to maintain the veteran leadership.
Acee mused that Cason will be getting an extension, and Wright IMO is the best CB currently on our roster...
Wright/Woodson starting might be "OK" (as long as Woodson doesn't get hurt). Then we're down to Wright/Cason and none of us want that....
To me, when all is said and done, it's definitely NOT a no-brainer that we should sign Woodson. I think there are better, younger options out there to consider in the FA.

RE: Charles Woodson Released!
We will not sign any note worthy FAs this year.
This will be an offseason like the one AJ used to get so much crap for, where starters like Vasquez, Cason, and Phillips are allowed to walk and we sign a couple band aid veterans and try to supplement with the draft.
Its not because Telesco doesn't know what he's doing, its because we simply have no money thanks to the one time AJ did make an impact in FA.

Sounds very probable, I think the Chargers will sign one name brand free agent though. I believe they do it for several reasons, one is to help garner excitement and another to be able to say they tried...and even to give the team a little veteran leadership. Woodson, for the right price, could be very doable. He's a winner! He's been there, done that, and his influence on the young guys is immeasurable. I believe he still has something in the tank and he might love to come and play back in California again.

Even if we cut Gaither, Clary, Garay, McMichael, McClain, English and Royal we still have to re-sign some of our own guys just to be competitive. Players like Alexander, Barnes, Martin, Novak, Franklin, Lynch and Williams and/or Guyton are absolutely necessary IMO to re-sign just so we can field a respectable 53 man roster. They will not require huge contracts, but enough to chip away at the small amount of cap room we do have. We won't have real money to spend again until 2014, when that massive chunk of soon to be created "dead money" comes off the cap.

Syx I based my opinion of having more money under the cap from an article I read by Kevin Acee. Here is a snippet of what he wrote about the Chargers cap situation....Tell me what you think. "The team is in good shape against the cap, especially since they have sworn off a repeat of last year’s free agency foray. At present, the Chargers have just $6.5 million in cap space, but they'll loosen up at least that much more by freeing themselves of just a few contracts. It is, for instance, difficult to imagine defensive lineman Antonio Garay or linebacker Takeo Spikes being brought back at their present salaries. Garay is due $5 million in 2013. A fine backup, he was active just half the games last season. Spikes is due $3 million. He’s 36, a fantastic leader and good player in a limited role. Almost $3 million more will likely be saved in the jettisoning of fullback Le’Ron McClain and tight end Randy McMichael. Up to another nearly $3 million in cap savings is available by releasing receiver Eddie Royal, left tackle Jared Gaither and/or right tackle Jeromey Clary. While that would involve eating as much as $15 million in dead money against the cap, it would also amount to $11.5 million cash savings. Maybe that could be used to offset the $5 million guaranteed to receiver Robert Meachem. Yes, the man who had 14 receptions and was targeted just 32 times all last season is guaranteed $5 million in 2013. The Chargers have virtually no dead money at present, which is among the reasons why executive vice president Ed McGuire essentially has a job for life no matter who the general manager is. And none of those preceding numbers should bother Telesco anyway. He helped Indianapolis Colts GM Ryan Grigson maintain a roster with $35.5 million in dead money last season. The Colts won 11 games with a cheap, young roster. What this all means for Shaun Phillips, who led the Chargers with 9½ sacks in the final year of his contract, is that he’ll be wearing different colors in 2013. What it means for Vasquez and Cason remains to be seen."

RE: Charles Woodson Released!
Who wouldn't love to see Woodson wearing a Charger helmet?
Telesco has some wiggle room, but $9 million is a steep price to pay for a 36-year-old guy who broke his collar bone last season.
He's definitely not Sanders -- Sanders was ALWAYS injured -- but $9 million is simply too much to pay for an old DB given the situation with our offensive line.
Now watch Woodson become a Patriot and thrive there.

RE: Charles Woodson Released!
I agree that Woodson is a great player and leader but age and prior injuries are catching up to him as well. There is a reason why GB cut him. 36 going on 37 is old and he has had some injury issues of late. I would rather spend the 9 million on an O lineman or Corner. Funny about the Patriots Hunter I had the same premonition.

I always think this too! Luckily BB has had as many misses as hits with his veteran signings over the years. HunterSTomlinson wrote: Now watch Woodson become a Patriot and thrive there.

RE: Charles Woodson Released!
He got cut because GB didn't want to pay $9 million. I highly doubt any other team would give him that.
But maybe $4.5-$5 million plus a little incentives? Why not!

RE: Charles Woodson Released!
Sure if he is willing to take the pay cut. I suspect if he is going to play for less he will want to play with a SB contender. Sadly that doesn't include us anymore. Chargerhonk wrote: He got cut because GB didn't want to pay $9 million. I highly doubt any other team would give him that.

Re: Charles Woodson Released!
I pass on Woodson. He is the kind of guy you sign if you are extremely close to winning it all. This team has too many current holes and needs to get younger not older.
