Any cuts coming? Restructure requests?

Any cuts coming? Restructure requests?

Just wondering who will be cut in a cap saving move?

Remember, this is a new coach, and a new GM so BIAS will not be part of the equation.

I have no idea who might be cut, but I'm hoping that Gates is approached to restructure.  He is no longer dominant and averaged only 36 yards per game and did not do well as an endzone target this year.  He's not going to be the GO TO guy next season at his age.

I just cannoy see us justifying paying him 4,500,000 next season, when we will likely have to go out and add a top Corner and likely a starting Tackle.

Gaither and Meachem were total busts and together will cost the team a staggering 9,500,000 if both return....  I'm not sure what the buyout would be if we cut them both, but if anyone knows, please post it here.  These two need to go if if makes sense money wise.

Spikes is due 3,000,000.  I don't see him earning it.....  He should restructure or be cut.

Royal is also due 3,000,000.  Useless....

Any CAP savvy fans out there and want to take a crack at this?  How much can we save so we can CUT THE FAT to add players that will get us back to the post season quickly?

RE: Any cuts coming? Restructure requests?

Usually when you restructure you have to offer an extension, I don't see this being realistic in Gates' case.
Rivers...maybe.
Weddle...possible, this is the one I'd really go after for a re-structure.
Hardwick...no way.

The real problem is that $19+M in cap space Meachem, Gaither, and Clary will take up this year as the 3rd, 5th, and 6th highest paid players on the roster. There is really no way to save cap space by cutting any of them. Its also worth remembering we're going to free up $3.5M by cutting Garay, $2M by cutting English, and $3M if we do indeed release Spikes...which is starting to look doubtfull.

Telesco, the stage is yours...  Man I hope he isn't just a Spanos puppet and makes some real, unbiased moves.

There are players on this team that are just too comfortable.

Every year it's the players being shocked and saying "what happened?"

What happened is we suck.

Time for a re-make.  I'd like for us to have the following identity.

An I'M GOING TO HURT YOU Defense, one that the league has never seen.

And a ball-control offense similar to the Patriots' balanced attack.

Using Hockey analogy.....  "we need some goons...."

RE: Any cuts coming? Restructure requests?

If I'm giving my dreamish somewhat realistic draft/FA scenario...Start by restructuring Rivers and Weddle, give them another year and reduce the cap hits this year.

Cut/allow to walk away
Clary
Gaither
Phillips
Jammer
Cason
Garay

Re-sign
Vasquez
Alexander
Barnes
Martin
Lynch
Franklin
Williams
Guyton

Sign
Andy Levitre
Derek Cox
Martellus Bennett

Draft
1 - OT Eric Fisher
2 - SS Matt Elam
3 - CB Jamar Taylor: arguably the smoothest cover CB in this class, will run 4.3 at combine and we'll probably miss out on him.
4 - OLB Cornelius Carradine: Honestly he has better college tape than Melvin Ingram did, injury is why he will fall. Rookie/redshirt.
5 - OT David Quesenberry
6 - OG JC Tretter
7 - RB Cierre Wood

Why would Weddle restructure?  He should have made the Pro Bowl for the second year in a row and just signed his contract.  He would be stupid to redo his deal.   I like the mock though.  I have Fisher and then Jordan Poyer as the second rounder but that kid Elam is going to be a player and like him as well.  I don't think taylor will be there at our 3rd round spot.

The term "restructure" doesn't have only negative connotations, it can be a good thing for the player as well as the franchise.

Ex1: It may mean a player will make less money in year 1, in exchange for double in year 2. (in the most simple terms)
Ex2: It may mean a player will make less money in year 1, but add big a 5th year of mostly guaranteed money...making the total of the contract worth more.  It only requires the player to be patient.

The reason it works better with guys like Rivers and Weddle is they already have what I like to call F YOU money, cutting salary by $3M in 2012 and tacking it back on 3 years later (+ interest) isn't a life altering decision.  I think theoretically we could save as much as $10M on the 2012 cap by restructuring those contracts if we are willing to take the risk to add another year.

Here's what I got from a buddy of mine.  Not sure where exactly he go it from but here's how it breaks down

(*) = including any guaranteed money

And this counts as if they were to be release right now and for those that only have one posing.  It's because it didn't matter either way.

Player/ cost if kept for the season/cost if released right now

Rivers - 18.3 mil / 18.43 mil *

Gaither - 6 mil

Gates - 6.8 mil / 11.5 mil

Garay - 3 mil / 3.7 mil *

Royal - 4.5mil /  6 mil *

Hardwick - 4.8 mil / 7 mil *

Meach - 6.8 mil / 10.6 mil *

Spikes - 3 mil / 3.7 mil *

Spanlish - 2.4 mil

McSlow poke - 1.6 mil

Bigby - 1.6 mil

I think Clary is $4.5 mil but I might be mistaken.

Clary is 4.55 mil.

Here is a link...albeit a bit old. Maybe summer of 2012. Kaeding was still here.

http://msn.foxsports.com/nfl/t...-diego-chargers

My Take:

S. Phillips has to restructure (pay cut) if he wants to stay.
Ditto with Clary (as a back-up)...too many sacks and pressure
Spikes also if he wants to stay.
Need to deal with Meachem, Gaither, Royal, English and Garay so we can write new deal with Donald Butler.
Spurlock is a bargain compared to Royal and a lot more productive...as CHonk pointed out.

Re: Any cuts coming? Restructure requests?

The full amount including signing bonus for this upcoming season is

5.7 mil w/ 4 mil as his base and 1.7 as his bonus

If released today Clary will cost the Bolts 7.4 mil on the cap because he's also due bonus money next year as part of his "guaranteed" money.

4.5 mil is suppose to be his base salary for next year.

Thanks for the info!

I hate to say it, but I have a feeling that Clary might still be a Charger next year, but with a restructured contract, and without a guarantee that he'll be a starter.

What's the scoop on Gaither's contract????  I remember that we only save $500,000 by cutting him??

Man AJ screwed up with these two clowns.....  How is Telesco going to deal with it?

Re: Any cuts coming? Restructure requests?

AJ did screw up royally! Are we still paying off Jyles Tucker! banghead

I wouldn't keep Clary unless he is clearly a back-up. And even then a back-up for the guard position. And he has to take a major restructuring...like 75%...HA! Or some type of incentive clause where for every defensive player he lets through his version of a human turnstile, he gets docked $$$.

With that said, Yantha I know you've been clamoring for a tight end...and I have been reading how our own SDSU TE Gavin Escobar is really impressing. If you haven't heard of him, check him out. I hope he's on the board after the first few rounds, could be a real steal if he is, but I doubt it.

Re: Any cuts coming? Restructure requests?

I really like Escobar, but I see him as more of a pass catching TE than a dominant blocker.  If we hadn't drafted LaDarius Green, whom I'm VERY high on, I'd definitely be looking at Escobar as an option.

I just think that his bread and butter will be in the passing game.

On the topic of TE's Antonio Gates should be approached to restructure his contract.  He unfortunately is not worth $4.5 million right now.  I'd restructure him down to $3 million and extend him one extra year on the back end of his contract.  He should be open to that sort of deal.

This team needs to find some money to improve our OL and Secondary, and CB's, OT's aren't cheap.

FOR CRYING OUT LOUD! WHAT A BUMMER!

This guy CANNOT be the starting ROT again...he will have to be kept as the most expensive back-up.

I like the idea of moving Clary to OG since we seem to be stuck with him.  I agree that Rivers needs a new OT or put him on the list for a new kidney transplant.

We're not stuck with him, if we cut him now the impact on the 2013 cap will be nearly the same as if he stayed....but the benefit is that he will have no impact on the 2014 cap.

The same goes for every player on the roster.  We're only "stuck" with a player like Meachem because his signing bonuses would be accelerated, making it so cutting him is far more expensive (in the short term) than just keeping him around.
