Time to instill some ATTITUDE in this finesse D of ours....
LaRon Landry is just the kind of player this team needs. Injuries behind him, he had a monster MONSTER season and is an UFDA. I want teams to FEAR this D of ours. I want opponents to hurt not only during the game, but I want them to hurt the following week as well..... PS. Don't tell me he's too expensive..... Playoff teams pay up when needed, and CUT THE FAT to clear the cap space... We need to forget the old AJ attitude and adopt the new regime. We all know who he is and what he's about but here's a highlight vid if interested: Man it gets me pumped... BIG fan of this player. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XVzmrRJWv0I

Re: Time to instill some ATTITUDE in this finesse D of ours....
He's an interesting player. He had the injury bug too until this past season...The dude is a beast though, just google him, he's like the Hulk, seriously.
I would love to see the Chargers sign three quality free agents. It's hard to pinpoint where Telesco will target without knowing how they rank our needs verses how the rank players for the draft verses money to play with for this off season.
I suspect the Chargers WILL HAVE TO sign at least one top offensive lineman and they will probably look to sign a free agent defensive player, such as a corner. That's where I think the free agents will be the focus. I do think they will also find a journeyman running back. I saw Lombardo suggested Jennings....I really like Ahmad Bradshaw. Dude is tough as nails. Obviously he's an injury risk too..but he's only 27 and could be part of a rotation with Mathews and a rookie running back. I

RE: Time to instill some ATTITUDE in this finesse D of ours....
there was nothing wrong with AJs attitude to FAs, im sure the Bills owner isnt too happy his GM spent 100 mill on a DE and his team still didnt make the playoffs ...again
IMHO we need to grab a top FA OT first and we need a quality CB before we can even think about Landry

Re: Time to instill some ATTITUDE in this finesse D of ours....
We need some ANIMALS on defense. Right now we have ZERO animals.
I want at least two players on D that are FEARED and AVOIDED.
I'd like one of those players to be LaRon Landry. A guy that can finally fill "The Hitman's" shoes after far too many years with wimpy Steve Gregories, and Atari Bigby's of the World...
And I want SPIKES to be demoted to BACKUP as well, so that we can bring in another ILB ANIMAL that can still play. I'm not sure who that is yet..... Maybe he's in the draft, maybe in FA.

Re: Time to instill some ATTITUDE in this finesse D of ours....
To me it all depends on how the draft would play out. If we do actually draft OT, OT in the first two rounds, then we might not need to grab a starting Left Tackle in the Free Agency. I just don't see dominating safeties in the draft. I see some great first round corners, but somehow I think that if Fisher was on the board, we will finally address OL. And we need to "cut the fat" and gain some cap space too. Chargerhonk wrote: He's an interesting player. Re: Time to instill some ATTITUDE in this finesse D of ours....
If we want attitude on defense, it starts up front and in the middle...period. Use the 11th pick and take Hankins or Star. I know, I know, Left Tackle...I'm praying for a Free agent. One of those NT would solve a problem for 7-8 years. It would also help our secondary because we could finally collapse the pocket. This would also allow Ingram to be a beast off the edge. One player would instantly improve the entry defense.

Cannot go wrong either way if we draft NT or OT but our top priority is to the Oline because we can no longer count on Gaither and Clary whereas Cam and Aubrayo can hold the NT for another year

Re: Time to instill some ATTITUDE in this finesse D of ours....
I don't understand why we are limited to "either or"?
Why is it that we can't address ALL the holes on the team by cutting or restructuring overpaid/underperforming players like Gaither, Meachem, Royal, Clary, Spikes, Gates, and then filling THREE of the major holes with high draft picks?
...then filling the rest via FA?
It can be done.
Just an example, but let's say we go with my signature below? Fill in your players of choice, but in my draft/FA offseason, we get a young, starting left and right tackle, a dominant Safety, an upgrade at Corner, an upgrade at blocking TE (that will also help our OL), and even better depth at NT.
Not bad.

I would absolutely take Lotulelei if he fell to us, but its not going to happen unless he has a hugely disappointing combine...in which case we'll all be a little less excited about him. Hankins is more of a 2 down player, I think those guys are starting to wash out in the NFL.

I said then and its still true that we were not ready to replace him. So many apologists clamored for the rotational mix of blah and blah. That dude was a beast! MikeLombardo wrote:

Free agency is before the draft. We'll have to select the "good" FA players well before the draft as they are snatched up the first couple days. The draft will depend on how Free Agency goes, not the other way. yantha wrote: To me it all depends on how the draft would play out. Hankins is more of a 2 down player, I think those guys are starting to wash out in the NFL. For the most part, pass rushers are not effective unless the O-line has to overload the middle of the line, i.e. double and triple teams. This allows the edge rushers to get singled up. Without a legitimate NT in a 3-5 denfense, the o-line can easily can stop even the best pass rushers. Additionally, these two NT's are special. I don't know if you find one in the next 2-3 drafts like them. And if you don't think the position is a premium, look what happened to Baltimore in the SB when Ngata left with an injury. It almost cost them the game. Syx, I disagree on Hankins; I think he's a 3 down player. He has really kept with weight in check and with an NFL diet and condition program, he will only get better.
My belief is build to your strength. The defense is young and has some talent. The current model would be establish a GREAT denfense, even if that means having an average offense. We lost 5 games last year by 7 points or less, that is not including the Denver 24 pt. melt down. Most of those losses were attributed to ZERO pass rush or threat of a pass rush because we couldn't collaspe the pocket. We could have the best corners in the league, but they can't cover for 3-7 seconds.
I don't think this defense is far from being in the top 5, barring major injuries, and the addition of several positions (NT, SLB, CB). I think with the addition of one of those two NT's, Cason would look like a different CB.

Excellent point! If we land a few starting players for our secondary, we can NAIL the OL in the draft early and often! SanDiegosFinest wrote: Free agency is before the draft. Re: Time to instill some ATTITUDE in this finesse D of ours....
I would honestly be pissed if we signed Landry. He's an overrated punk. Yeah he makes big hits that get him on the highlight reels and get him pro bowl votes but there is a lot more to being a good safety than just lighting people up. He's terrible in coverage and for a guy that hits like he does he's not very good against the run either. He blows people up when he gets the chance, but far more often he is taking a bad angle or missing tackles allowing the offense to make plays. He's a below average player that gets a lot of publicity and fanfare because he hits hard and he's overrated and is going to be overpaid because of it. I'm not against the idea of adding a safety in FA but I wouldn't even consider Landry.

Re: Time to instill some ATTITUDE in this finesse D of ours....
+1 What's funny about the highlight film, is that 70-80% of the hits would now be considered illegal for either being head shots or shots on a defenseless receiver. While he may bring a headhunter mentality, he would also bring a plethora of personal foul penalties. I agree that he's terrible in coverage also, huuuuge liability on the deep plays.
