Five Up, Five Down
Lots of big decisions for Telesco and McCoy to make this offseason. I am sure they're watching lots of tape and deciding who is on the upswing and who is on the down. So give me your top five "starters" in order of significance, for the 2013, as far as potential impact on the Chargers season, and top five who are on the downward spiral towards the glue factory. My Top Five Moving Up 1. Kendall Reyes (Monster) 2. Vincent Brown (Will rebound and have huge season) 3. Corey Liuget (Monster Jr.) 4. Melvin Ingram (Learned the ropes, now ready to pay dividends) 5. Donald Butler (Ready to take it to the next level) My Top Five Moving Down 1. Jerome Clary (Human turnstile, obvious top pick, enough said) 2. Nick Hardwick (Average at best, position needs to be addressed real soon, if not now) 3. Quentin Jammer (Step slow and getting older, time to upgrade is now) 4. Antonio Gates (Yes, he still has ability to help, but father time is knocking, Ladarius Green and hopefully a drafted rookie can help fill the gap, his impact is diminishing) 5. Ryan Mathews (Either you see him as someone with potential or a bust, I see bust, sorry, IMHO won't be around after 2013)
What this list tells me is that our defense is young and has a lot of potential to be a force with another few quality playmakers and our offense needs help getting some real athletic playmakers.

Re: Five Up, Five Down
Great list and I agree with all but one. While I think that Ingram will be on my list after next year, I think that he needs another year to show me more. Definitely in top 10 but not top 5 for me. I would replace Ingram with Luis Vasquez. With a good supporting cast, and a better running back drawing attention to the line, Vasquez might get pro-bowl consideration one day. IMO the only bright spot on the line. As for top 5 moving down, unfortunately there are too many for me to consider... Cason, Spikes, JJ, Garay, Meachem, Royal all deserve consideration for this list as well. Chargerhonk wrote:Lots of big decisions for Telesco and McCoy to make this offseason. Re: Five Up, Five Down
Thanks Yantha!
Cason had an improved second half but he is a serious headache, I agree! He was a stud in college, I am just hoping he is starting to figure it out. I don't know if he'll be replaced, what do you think?
Spikes is OLD!!! I didn't count him because I think he won't be a Charger in 2013.
Garay is a serviceable back up IMHO. Meachem and Royal were huge disappointments, I just think that if Rivers has a revamped offensive line, it will buy him more time, giving Meachem a real opportunity to get open. Royal could lose his job to Spurlock if he isn't ready for camp, so he might not be around either. I agree with all these names, it's just that many of them might not be here in 2013, which I took into account or won't be starters, maybe I should have left Clary off the list...since he too might be jettisoned.

Cool premise and I agree with your last thought on what this short list shows us.

Re: Five Up, Five Down
I agree with Yantha here (and thus most of your list Honk). But I just think the season showed us how good Vasquez is/can be. Imagine if we add another strong player (or two) on that line! So I'd go with Yantha's list. Though I will say that the Vincent Brown ranking is possibly more hope since he doesn't have a lot on film to judge. My Top Five Moving Up 1. Kendal Reyes (Monster) 2. Vincent Brown (Will rebound and have huge season) 3. Corey Liuget (Monster Jr.) 4. Luis Vasquez 5. Donald Butler (Ready to take it to the next level) yantha wrote: Great list and I agree with all but one.

Re: Five Up, Five Down
I tell you, Honk, if Clary is even on the roster come training camp, then I'll be on board with getting rid of Telesco (mostly joking). He should not be part of any consideration as far as the '13 season is concerned. Butler would be my #1 moving up. I believe MLB, even in a 3 - 4, is the most important defensive player on the field. If Pagano is given the latitude, I think he'll find a way to utilize Ingram in a way that will prove you right (sorry, Doc). However, you are going to be wrong about Mathews. And I honestly believe that. I wish someone could give insights into Molk, Troutman, and our injured rookie safety. Honorable mention Vaz and Brown Thanks bro! One thing is for sure! Our defense could get real good, real quick. I know I want an OT with our first pick. But...if the Chargers got Star at #11 at DT. That would be one of the best young defensive lines in football. Add two free agents on the defensive side of the football...CB for sure and WOW! I love teams that have awesome defenses. That's why Seattle at home this season was so much fun to watch. I would love to see the Chargers become the Seahawks when they play at home.

Re: Five Up, Five Down
Great list Mike!
I like Denario, obviously he had a breakthrough this season. My only question is health. Can he do it for a whole season. That's why I didn't put him on my top five. I also think Vincent Brown will be "the guy" when all is said and done in 2013.
Ronnie Brown? He does well catching the ball out of the backfield but many feel he already has a lot of tread on the tires. I hope the Chargers find a rookie who can be Sproles like and fill that void better.
I like Shareece Wright a lot....He was #6 on my list.
Meachem is still an enigma. I say give him one more off-season to work things out and get Rivers more time.
Gaither I see as already gone...(cross our fingers) but he is definitely top of the list with Clary.
Rivers huh? Interesting. Obviously all stats point downward, but I want to see what a new GM/Coach and offensive line can do for him.

Re: Five Up, Five Down
I hope you are wrong Mike about the last few on your decline list. I think Rivers will rebound if and when he gets protection. I also think Gates will have a better year next year. Its hard to say how Gaither can decline since he was complete garbage this year so the only way he can go down is joining Clary on the move out list. Agree with Honk above about our defense. Lotulelei would be a great pick at 11 as would Milliner IMO especially if Joeckl and Fischer are gone.

Re: Five Up, Five Down
MOVING UP:
1: Liuget 2: Butler 3: Alexander 4: Reyes 5: Ingram
Exciting times especially on Defense with these 4, we all forget about VJ if Danario carries on from where he left off this past season
MOVING DOWN:
1: Clary 2: Jammer 3: Hardwick 4: Spikes 5: Rivers
All 5 on the downside of their respective careers, Rivers gets a last chance to show he is not regressing

Trend is pointing downward but how much of that was on Norvalous' play not to lose mentality and on the O-line. I say Rivers gets another year under a brand new HC and OC. I think he may surprise us.

RE: Five Up, Five Down
If the club is smart, and gives TUTU a chance next season, IMO we'll all be RAVING about this guy on our "up" list...
Personally, he's my favourite non-starter on the team by a LONG shot.

He has made some great grabs, especially that one at the end of the season to start the first series of a game. I wonder why he hasn't gotten more chances though? Speed, hands, or inability to create space?

Yantha loves to wear a TuTu. I am sure you can find a pick of that Honk! Chargerhonk wrote:
