rookie impressions: Melvin Ingram

rookie impressions: Melvin Ingram

i know the board was split with Ingram, some thought he was overrated, his short arms his achilles heel and more thought he was special

im interested to know what everyones first year impressions are of Super Melvin Ingram

was he worth the first round pick?
who you would have drafted instead of Ingram

ill start, i think Super Melvin is special, his STs tackle against the Raider in the season finale sealed it for me. he has a great motor and is a relentless SOB, his penalties this year is just a minor blemish to a outstanding rookie year

im not sure if i wouldve changed picks, maybe for Russell Wilson

Great question Kiwi! I was thinking the same thing.

I was surprised he wasn't utilized a little more than he was at times but it seems he was learning the ropes.

I think come next season, he's going to really bring it, since he knows what he has to do now, to get himself prepared.

But...I am still wondering if he's going to be a game changer or just a very steady defensive presence. I would like to know from Joe and a few others on here, who have a better perspective, what they think.

RE: rookie impressions: Melvin Ingram

After watching Liuget's monstrosity of a rookie season, and his sophomore year, I will not even try to make judgement on Ingram at this point.

He had a decent rookie year, probably missed a dozen sacks by the skin of his teeth, but I want to see him get faster this offseason.

Re: rookie impressions: Melvin Ingram

Still think Melvin will wind up being an absolute beast sooner rather than later. As mentioned he is relentless and seems to have a great motor. Some of the penalties were dumb but those are growing pains. He was a step away from more than a handful of sacks and seemed to be coming on strong towards the end of the year. With the way he works as he gets more experienced and adjusts to the pro game I think he will be a stud. Those near misses will start to get converted and he could become a big time pass rusher as soon as next year imo. There were some guys taken after him that had better seasons, but I am still extremely high on Melvin.

I was the first one on the board to rave about him. I still like this player.  He did not even play more than half the snaps this season and will play more next year.  You are going to like what you see. Stay tuned.

I was hoping for more from Ingram, but he was good. I look forward to seeing him develop!

Re: rookie impressions: Melvin Ingram

Showed a lot of promise and I still like the pick.  Not completely sure why he wasn't used more but I think Pags was looking more to his two vets to pick up more of the slack rather than throw Ingram in there to take away snaps from SP and JJ.  I get Ingram was a 1st rounder but when you have SP and JJ there, you expect more out of guys that have been there done that at a fairly high level to be more productive.  But that's just my take.

Re: rookie impressions: Melvin Ingram

I liked him and am confident he will be better next season with more impact. He will be a worthwhile first round pick but long armed OLineman seem to be able to keep him at bay.

His impact may not be as good as I had hoped but he might be a star on ST's along with a very good Defensive guy. Sort of like Weddle.

I really like Ingram. I did expect more numbers in the bolts system, but he showed his athleticism a ton and has a great motor like Reyes. I still think he will make us all forget the mistake that is Larry Spanglish. I expect Ingram to play a lot more in other packages now that he has a year under his belt. Great pick especially for the slot.

Yep, you convinced me leading up to the draft, doc, and that's not easy to do wink.

And you were right, too.  Plus, like you just said, the only reason he seemed to not do as much this season was because he didn't play a lot.  But then, this team led the league in run defense during the early part of the season, and its front seven was EASILY its strength, so that's not surprising at all.

Once he plays a majority of the snaps, I think any remaining doubts will be gone.

Re: rookie impressions: Melvin Ingram

I agree 88.  He did not get but about 30% of the snaps and he seemed to just miss the sack every time.  I see him playing more next year and if they use him right he will get his sacks.

If our corners could cover anybody for more than a second or two, he'd have more sacks. Our corners are horrible which allows opposing QB's to get rid of the ball before the pass rush can get there.

Re: rookie impressions: Melvin Ingram

As crazy as this sounds, fix the o-line and our defense will improve.

If our offense can return to form, the defense will get more rest, and will see less playing time.

We have some very young CB's. I'm not ready to give up on them yet, but I do have my concerns.

Re: rookie impressions: Melvin Ingram

Melvin is a good player who will get better.  Has lots to learn yet but his raw skills are immense.  As many have said he was close on several sacks.  Those will come when the game slows down for him.  He was fooled a few times on the run,, and struggled at times in coverage but he always put good hits on the ball carrier causing several turnovers.  Whatever he lacks in arm length he makes up for with speed and leverege.   I look for a leaner meaner Melvin in 2013 .   Lets hope Pagano opens up the playbook and let this man loose because he does seem to be a gamer.

Not crazy sounding at all, C4L. A fact. When the offense consistently goes three and out, the defense gets worn down much more easily. Great point.
