LATER ROUND OL PICK

Posted: 01/04/2013 9:59 AM

LATER ROUND OL PICK

Kyle Long, Howie Long's youngest, looked pretty good as the Left Guard for U of O last night. He has less experience on the gridiron because he took a baseball scholarship out of HS and took awhile to get back to football.

What I read about him is that he has a high upside due to physical ability but is still a bit raw. However he looked good last night and we need a LOG!

RE: LATER ROUND OL PICK

we should never pick another OL after the 4th round. If learned anything in the last 10 years under AJ, is that it is almost impossible to find an serviceable OL in the later rounds. I don't believe any of the late round OL that he selected have really amounted to anything except for Clary who was a 6th rounder and he has performed horribly these past few seasons. (what else would you expect from a late round OL lol)
Mock Draft
1)L.Johnson/J.Cooper
2)J.Taylor/D.Hopkins
3)A.Ellington/R.Alford
4)D.Quessenberry
5)B.Mcgee/TJ.Barnes
6)J.Boyce/E.Wolff
7)V.Williams/R.Rouse
UFA)S.Maponga/N.Robey/J.Francis

I agree to a point....I think what you are saying is draft lineman earlier in the draft and more often. I would love to see a list of all the playoff teams this year and then look at what round all their offensive lineman were drafted....anyone up for that task? Would be interesting to look at...

+100000

I cant put in words how disgusted i will be if we dont pick up 2 OL with our first 3 picks, im notinterested in waiting and rolling the dice anymore, we need surefire OL starters for the future and the odds are too bad after round 4

The fourth round is usually a good spot for guards.

RE: LATER ROUND OL PICK

I counted only 6 Tackles out of 24 total that were drafted round after the second round and 2 of them are from the packers who have one of the worst OL in the NFL. and every team except the packers have a 1st round Tackle on their team.

RG and C were usually the lowest drafted and those are the only two positions we do not need.

Re: LATER ROUND OL PICK

Damn. Those 49ers sure know how to prioritize their draft picks and hit paydirt with them. If and when the Chargers can match their OL talent with their DL talent, watch out. I hope we sign Gamble as our GM.

Re: LATER ROUND OL PICK

I like the idea of them getting the dude from SF to be our GM.  I dont have a problem with them getting an Oline player in the 4th round but this year it better be after they already picked up a stud in round 1 or 2.

Re: LATER ROUND OL PICK

Because he had this arrogant belief that he could find great OT's off the street. So arrogant that we didn't even have OT's that were drafted; not even in the 7th round. Just street walkers used to protect our franchise QB.

Good bye AJ!!!!

Re: LATER ROUND OL PICK

There is nothing wrong with picking offensive linemen late in the draft -- you just have to set your expectations accordingly. I think Scott Mruczkowski would be considered an excellent draft pick, a 2003 seventh-rounder who ended up appearing in 83 games, starting 16 of them. He never ended up being a Pro Bowler or even a full-time starter, but he provided solid depth at several positions for the better part of seven seasons. I'd consider that pick a full-blown success ... the Chargers could use more like it.

Re: LATER ROUND OL PICK

I agree with Mike here.  There is definitely nothing wrong with looking at late round OL but when you believe that late rounders will pan out as soon as the early round guys that are considered ready to start and be an impact immediately.  Well, you're just setting yourself up for a huge failure and disappointment.

Yes, the early rounders are just as big a crap shot as the later rounders but there is a reason why certain guys are considered 1st rounders and why others are considered late to undrafted stock types.  It's because they've shown a certain promise and potential at the previous level.

If you as GM are unwilling to go 1st round with OL, 2nd and 3rd are just as solid areas to find at least starting potential/level guys.  Not that you can't find late round gems but more often then not, those later rounders are more project and work in progress types that can potentially pan out to be starters later on in their careers rather than immediately.

Re: LATER ROUND OL PICK

Bambi...nice bit of homework. It shows how the OLine is similar to all of the positions by draft selection...high picks sprinkled in with low and undrafted guys. Thanks.

I'm not sold on our back-up lineman and think we need to find a future Center, thus Fourth and Fifth round guys might work. After the stud OT's, of course!

Joeckel, Mathews, from A&M and Lane Johnson from Oklahoma all looked good in the Cotton Bowl. They could have started for the Chargers this past season!

Re: LATER ROUND OL PICK

My biggest fear is Joeckel is gone at the 11th pick, and we reach on a tackle when there's a ton of defensive studs sitting on the board.

Perhaps, we should change our draft strategy to Best Player Available?
